Subject: Psychedelic Rock Poll 2

This is a far more extensive poll than my original Psychedelic Rock poll, using all 25 available options this time around. It includes ALL of the great bands mentioned by our kind PA members in the accompanying thread to my previous Psychedelic Rock  poll. My apologies again if I've left your favourite band out of the poll. The previous poll had no conclusive winner with both the Jimi Hendrix Experience and The Doors drawing level with four votes each. It might have helped if I'd posted my poll in the right music forum though, instead of in the General Music Discussion forum, but I was new here at the time, so what did I know. That's my excuse anyway. Tongue I'm looking forward to seeing your selections and it would be great if you want to post your Top 5 Psychedelic Rock bands below. Here are my choices:-

1. Jimi Hendrix Experience
2. The Doors
3. Jefferson Airplane
4. Iron Butterfly
5. Quicksilver Messenger Service

My prediction is Pink Floyd will win this second Psychedelic Rock poll, now that they're included. Smile

Thanks! Thumbs Up AZF suggested I should have included Pink Floyd in my first Psychedelic Rock poll, and now that they're included, I'm predicting they'll win this poll. They've already picked up two votes in the first couple of hours.

Randy California's band Spirit aren't underrated by me. I have their first five albums in a box set and they're still sounding great after all these years. Thumbs Up

Never thought Spirit was underrated as I've seen plenty of love for Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus and the debut in my time. It's very hard for me to choose just one, but I'm in a Pearls Before Swine kind of mood right now. In fact, I've put on Balaklava for my listening pleasure.

Were they both? I've listened to Fever Tree streaming, but have none in my physical collection. Also remembered that I can say the same of Grateful Dead (well, also heard Grateful Dead from other's music collections). EDIT: By the way, I did some of my favourite psych tracks from 1967 and 1968 in this poll with youtube links, which you might well have noticed already. I just mention in case you might find something there that you don't yet know: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=116344" rel="nofollow - http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=116344

I realised almost as soon as I posted my first poll that I'd neglected to include the Grateful Dead, but I'm grateful I remembered to include them this time. Smile

Actually, it was Nickie (Snicolette) who mentioned both, but I've been revisiting lots of Pearls Before Swine thanks to this poll. Already listened to Balaklava and now playing One Nation Underground. Great band, imo.

I also enjoy all of the bands....hard to pin it down to one out of so many.  Obviously, I'm a huge PBS fan (note my quote)...Oddly, though, I think of them as less rock-y, more folk-y....but definitely psych.  Perhaps because they used mostly acoustic instruments, although every once in a while Tom would belt one out.

I checked out Pearls Before Swine on Wikipedia first before including them in the poll and their music genres are listed as Psychedelic Folk, Folk Rock & Psychedelic Rock,  so I guessed no one would mind me including them in this Psychedelic Rock poll. I agree with you though - I think Pearls Before Swine are more Psych-Folk than Psychedelic Rock. Smile

Listed as Prog-Folk herein.  But there was surely a psych element, or two.

I'll comfortably label PBS as an acid folk (psychedelic folk) band for the majority of albums, and include it in my psych polls.

Just like Jethro Tull on the folk poll, including Pink Floyd makes sure they will win. I don't know many bands here, but Floyd are my overall favourite band, so I expect they are my favourite here too. The thing about including such big bands in a genre poll, is that if you are curious about the genre and want to see the poll to get an idea of where to look for more of it, it won't help since all the votes will be with (in this case Pink Floyd). Still, I guess if I want to know some more psychedelic, my next step should be Hawkwind (whom I actually don't see in this poll... that is weird), just as if I want to know more of Folk prog, I should go with Strawbs.

My favorites here are among the more well-known: Pink Floyd, Jimi (who I voted for), the Doors. Quicksilver and It's a Beautiful Day are also excellent. My least favorite is the Airplane - they were a great band and I love Grace Slick, but I don't like Marty Balin that much  Go figure.

I included Pink Floyd in this poll because a couple of PA members suggested them in my first Psychedelic Rock poll. Don't worry about Hawkwind not being included in this poll though. They'll be in my upcoming Space Rock poll and I feel pretty sure they'll win the poll too. In my own personal view, there's a clear difference between Space Rock and Psychedelic Rock, but that's just my opinion. I had a similar poll a while back. Here it is.  http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=112297&KW=&PID=5509043#5509043" rel="nofollow - http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=112297&KW=&PID=5509043#5509043  Unfortunately you can no longer vote in it. Not my decision though. I think after a year or so(or maybe less than that)they close down voting in polls.

Yeah, topics lock automatically after a certain period of inactivity. I've unlocked it in case anyone wants to continue discussion in that topic (though perhaps there ain't a lot of point in having many similar topics going at the same time as it can dilute discussion - I often find it interesting to compare similar polls and topics).

Well, thanks for doing that. I don't see a problem with that personally. This poll has more options than my old one anyway.

I noticed in your poll that Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention won the poll by a wide margin, which surprised me. I also noticed Vanilla Fudge received seven votes in your poll, although no one's voted for them so far in either of my two Psychedelic Rock polls. I haven't decided who I'll be voting for yet in your poll because there are some good choices there.

Actually that one was placed well, and also is where I posted my psychedelic "Twenty-five 1967 and 1968 tracks" topic (since so many of my choices were not included as Prog acts at this site). Technically, this and other Prog forums are intended specifically for bands/ artists included in prog categories at PA (though if the majority are to be found in prog categories, I think that's fine). As for ones included here in Prog Related, we can't actually makes polls in the "Proto-Prog and Prog-Related Lounge", unless it has changed when I wasn't looking.

Here's a link to your first psych poll for those who want to see it but don't want to search for it: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=121068" rel="nofollow - http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=121068

Maybe we could have a poll of all-female rock bands generally, such as Ace of Cups, Heart, Girlschool, The Bangles, The Go-Go's, Fanny, Vixen, etc.

Anyway, Airplane and Hendrix for me. Pink Floyd's psychedelic albums are also great faves of mine, especially A Saucerful of Secrets - my top PF album.

I knew there'd be someone I'd left out of my poll, but I'd already used up all 25 options available. Confused

Wink

Well, even if Pink Floyd is my favourite band overall, I haven't really gotten into Psychedelic nor Space Rock, so I wouldn't really know what the difference should be. However, if you put Pink Floyd in the next one against Hawkwind, I'm sure Hawkwind wouldn't win.

I wouldn't class Pink Floyd as Space Rock, so they won't be up against Hawkwind in my upcoming Space Rock poll. Wink

Love

Arthur Lee - absolute legend in my eyes and Forever Changes is my favourite album of the sixties. Apparently it was voted the forth best album of all time in a recent poll conducted by a national newspaper in the UK!

I Love the "Forever Changes" album too. Here's a YouTube video for you of Arthur Lee & Love performing at Glastonbury in 2003. Heart

Love's Forever Changes is always in any Top 10 list that I am called upon to dream up.  Fantastic band and their best recording.

It's good to see Strawberry Alarm Clock picked up a couple of votes in the poll, bearing in mind I wasn't sure whether or not to include them. Smile

It's good to hear you're now able to vote. Thumbs Up Although Pink Floyd are the clear winners in the poll - as expected - it's a very close-run thing for second place at the moment between The Doors, Jefferson Airplane & the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
