These were small paperback books that I read in high school(would have been around 1989). So they were obviously published before that, I'm guessing in the 70's or early 80's. They were small paperbacks and only like 70 pages, maybe even 40. They were in the mystery/thriller type genre and they had puzzle pieces on the cover. I remember one of them was about an ear, someone's ear fell off or something like that.

Do any of you happen to remember these books? I've looked all over the internet and cannot find them. Again, small paperback books with puzzle pieces on the cover. One of them that I remember was about an ear.

Sounds like you and I are around the same age. I grew up in the northeast US... but I don’t remember the books. It’s not like a Choose Your Own Adventure series, right?

Thanks for replying Patrick. This was the northeast(upstate ny). At the time I considered these books somewhat similar to like the Choose Your Own Adventure series, though those books were for younger kids(I think). These, I believe, were geared toward like middle school to high school age. Also they weren't interactive like those, they were just short books that you read through. But they were all part of like the same series(although each book was a completely different story by different authors, etc.) But they all had the puzzle pieces, I want to say like in the upper left hand corner.. or down the side too. I don't remember, I just remember puzzle pieces on all the covers. I wish I could remember the name of the series. Driving me mad trying to find these books again lol. I really enjoyed them at the time.

I lived mostly in NY state growing up (not really upstate but I'm sure most would consider it that)but I don't remember these books. I actually have quite a book collection and there were some really old ones called "pocket books." I have a few on philosophy(Aristotle, Plato etc.)but I have a feeling that's not what you're talking about.

Hi, thanks for responding. I just searched "pocket books" on the internet and they don't look like the ones I'm talking about. I wish I could describe these better. They kind of looked like a slightly shrunken comic book. They looked like something you might find like in a waiting room(like at the doctor's office or something). And the more I think about it, I don't think it was actually puzzle pieces on the cover but more like the outline of puzzle pieces kind of thing.. if that makes sense. Like in an upper corner(I think). Also I don't think they were exclusive to NY, though I guess they might have been.

Also these books were fiction. Kind of strange mystery/thriller type theme. And now I'm thinking it was actual puzzle pieces lol. 30 years ago, hard to remember things exactly.

I don't suppose you are talking about "Goosebumps".

No, I just looked that up and it's not it. Thank you anyway. Those look more like new and shiny then these did lol. Also, unless I'm losing my mind at this point(possible), there were puzzle pieces(or at least the outline of puzzle pieces) on the cover of all of these books. And these books were kind of like flimsy things, not like nice neat books like Choose Your Own Adventure, or this Goosebumps deal. These were just very short little flimsy mystery/thriller deals with puzzle pieces art on the cover. But very short, like 70 pages if that.

It's The Case of the Missing Ear That Fell Off or Something Like That.

I spent some time looking, and while I came up with various mystery/ crime/ detective/ thriller type books with puzzle pieces worked into the cover art, none that seemed to match your paperbook series description. I'm guessing by the length and from what you've written that these were aimed at young adults or kids?

You might want to try this site for help, if you haven't already:

Obviously the more details/ clues you can think of the better.

I know this isn't what you're looking for, but I'm just posting this because it's such a "fantastic" magazine cover.

I used to collect the Three Investigators novels when I was a kid (with Jupiter Jones, in case anyone remembers that, and I had the Hardy Boys ones).

Aren't you clever. Thanks for the help man, I'll try those links. I'm thinking these books were aimed at teenagers. What's really frustrating is that the one book I mostly remember was definitely about this one guy's ear and I really want to say that the book was called "The Ear" But apparently there's some other ear book with a cartoon dog on the cover that keeps coming up when I try to search it lol. Oh well. I'll keep trying. Thanks again.

There's one with a cat called The Case of the Cat with the Missing Ear.

I did come across one earlier called an Ear For Trouble from the Crimebusters series which came out in 1989, but that series came out in 1989 and 1990, which may be a little too new even if you found it in 1989, and I don't think they had puzzle pieces on the cover.   Those novellas would be mostly aimed at tweens, I think.

I couldn't find either of those books on amazon, but I found the first one on ebay and a few of the crimebusters books there too. No dice, but thank you again. These books have to be out there somewhere, I can't be the only person in the world who read them lol. I may eventually have to ask on quora or something like that(seems to be like the new yahoo answers).

The closest thing I can find that is called "The Ear" from that time period is a book by Anita Jackson published in 1979 by Fearon-Pitman in the U.S. (57 pages) and in 1976 by Hutchinson in the U.K. (47 pages)

Fearon-Pitman edition:  https://www.worldcat.org/title/ear/oclc/5899142" rel="nofollow - https://www.worldcat.org/title/ear/oclc/5899142
Hutchinson edition:  https://www.worldcat.org/title/ear/oclc/16280284" rel="nofollow - https://www.worldcat.org/title/ear/oclc/16280284

It looks like this was republished in 1991, 1996, and 2001.

The thing is, the cover doesn't meet your description:
https://www.librarything.com/work/9061091" rel="nofollow - https://www.librarything.com/work/9061091

But it does seem to be a similar type of mystery/thriller story. Maybe there was another edition with a different cover? Or maybe this isn't the book and the title is different from "The Ear"?

Scans of covers from back then are a bit hit-and-miss still.

That's totally it. I believe that at the time it was in like a puzzle piece type format, or outline of puzzle pieces or something. But anyway that basic cover looks ridiculously familiar to me, has to be it. Thank you very much. You are, without question, The Man.
