The Joker is probably one of the greatest villains of all time so my vote goes to him.

Hi,

Was never into comic books ... besides the fact that in Brazil we couldn't afford them, and a loaf of bread was more important than a "geebee" as we called it down there!

Lex Luthor, as played by Gene Hackman.   The Joker, as played by Jack Nicholson.  All the rest can take a number.

As a lifelong fan, I found Jack's Joker was a riff on Cesar's, while Heath's Joker raised the bar much higher and didn't owe his origin to the Golden Age Joker.

Great villains, indeed, along with Ra's al Ghul, Bane, Scarecrow, Hush and an obscure one called the Wraith.

Batman has the greatest rogues' gallery of any character.

Heath's Joker did very little for me.  I know I'm in the minority on this one but I thought his acting looked and felt too staged and over done.  Example - that excessive lip licking.  Too much imo.  I'm not giving Jack a pass on his portrayal, I just thought his 'maniac' was little more real.  A little more believable.

^I feel the same way. Jack was a better Joker all-around and imho truer to the comic books...then again the Burton flicks were like that (also voted for the Joker in this poll btw).
The fact that Heath died shortly after the film effectively conjured up a ‘James Dean-like’ wave of appreciation. He was good too...just not Jack Nicholson good imo.

General Zod is also quite an intimdating villain. And Some other Superman villains are interesting on a philosphical and badassery level, like Brainiac and Bisarro

I concur; Zod, Brainiac, Bizarro, Metallo, Parasite, Mongul, Doomsday — classic Supervillains.

If you want to stick to the Golden/Silver Age, Cesar Romero's Joker > Jack's. The latter was emulating the former.

Jack did fine, but he wasn't really into the role. He did it for the money. He'd arrive for his take with commentary gold like "Another day...another fifty grand!"

But it was time for an update, and Heath delivered. The lip-licking facet just made him more freaky, as did the self-inflicted scars.

In DC's recent New 52 reboot (since retconned by Rebirth), Joker had a completely peeled face that he wore like a mask.

Tim Burton's first Batman was the first movie I watched at the cinema.

I was possibly the smallest person -9 years old probably- in the cinema, and I was sitting in the very front row (as I didn't know it is better to be in the near middle).

Oh boy, how scared I was. The movie theatre was a dark, decorated, antique and huge building with a very tall ceiling. It added to the freaky atmosphere. [Even its name is Efes Sineması (Ephesus Movie Theatre).]

So Jack Nicholson's "The Joker" was an appalling trauma for me. He was in my nightmares possibly everyday for a year.

As a fan of Skeletor of MOTU, such obscene psychopathy and evil was too much for me then.

Never been thrilled by Heath's "The Joker". It was convincing and all, yet a typical outcast psychopath.

Nicholson's Batman was like non-human. Even the last scene was suspicious. It was "The Joker" right? Something supernatural could have happened.

Also as a villain sympathizer, that "The Joker" is probably the only villain towards whom I felt sheer antipathy.

Michael Keaton was my hero, as you can guess. Hug

I know (most of) this and still prefer Jack

It's all good. I like having options. I'm looking forward to seeing Matt Reeves' Batman film. I hope we see villains who have yet to appear on the silver screen.

and Darkseid. I am biassed cause i love thd Fourth World saga and anything New Gods related and does not nessecarily need Superman as opposing Darkseid, Orion is as interesting IMO if done right, Mf Miracle is one of the best designed superheroes out there. And in Darkseid one get an awesome, versitile villian whom is complex yet can work well as a team buster villain

I love Kirby's Fourth World mythos (New Gods, Orion, Forever People, Mister Miracle). His visuals are unlike any other artist's.

And as we know, Marvel commissioned Jim Starlin to create their own version of Darkseid, a not-so-subtle knockoff dubbed Thanos.

I hope the New Gods movie won't disappoint. IMO, Marvel's filmic Infinity Gauntlet  sustained an underwhelming conclusion.

Marvel wanted a Darkseid-like Big Bad. Thanos was the result.

I've enjoyed many of the Joker performances over the years--beginning, of course, with Cesar Romero's. I do believe Heath Ledger took it to a different level--revised it, re-invented it, made it something new and different. That performance was, to be sure, haunting and, I believe, iconic.

The Lex Luthor list of castings is, for me, less clear. Gene Hackman is the one that I remember the most. I would, however, put in a nod for the unforgettable General Zod by Michael Shannon. That was a performance to remember!

Yes, it/he was. Stamp's Zod was fun for the time, but today he comes off a bit cheesy. Shannon really sold Zod as a genuine threat. He's one of my favorite actors, too. Check him out in The Shape of Water and Nocturnal Animals.
