So your'e done. All the songs are recorded, mixed and ready, now you only need to pick a name for your album.
A few rules to help and progify you album:
- Look out of the window. What do you see? The view. There are landscapes, horizons, the sun, the sea, the ocean, the forest. Just pick some of them. "Horizons of the Sun" will be a good name for your symphonic prog album. "A Landscapic Forest" will also do the job. If your band is about searching for the 70's prog style, a long name will do the job. "The Horizons Suns of the Landscapic Forest of the Sea" is about right.
- If your into prog metal. You MUST deal with the future. It has the be about the future, or futuristic preset. For example - "The Futuristic Future of the Futurism" will most defenetly reflect you as a prog metal band. If not the future as a stand-alone word, think of futuristic things you can watch on Star Trek. "Planet of the Lazer Beam" will surely get your fans enthusiastic.
- Invert words. Make them sound cool by using non-common letters like Z,X,Q etc. "The Futuristic Ocean of Quezlax" is a good name for a progressive album.
- If your band is about Zeuhl- you MUST NOT pick an English name. Pick a name by using above and following rules then translate it to another language. If you must have a name in English, try to make as many spelling mistakes as you can: "A Futwristik Motiw of Quazoh".
- The Symphonic prog band has to like fantasy. Think of magic, dragons, fairies and the name will come on its own "Legends of Magic Fairy Dragons" is one such thing. "Magicians of the Inner World Sea" is another.
- A RIO or Avant-Prog bands must first get rid of logic. A good name for a RIO album will be made with an adjective or a verb attached to a noun, without any connection between them. The lazier RIO musician can open the dictionary on a random spot choosing a noun then about a week later do the same thing with the adjective or the Verb. That way your RIO band should call your album with a name like "The Rewriting Fork" or a "Tired Fax-Machine Inevitable".
- Another option is one 7 or more letter word. The more it has to do to do with the concept the worse. That way you should the album "Conspiracy", "Arachnophobia" or "Geography". If you manage to change the words into non-existig words that still sound good it's better. "Geographity" or "Conspirocity" are excellent.
- Word games are necessary. Think of a known phrase and change it to you means. Auld Lang Syne for example could be changed to "Auld Lang Sin" if your'e a prog-metal band, "Odd Leg Sign" for a RIO band or "Oheld Land De Synew" for Zheul band.
- Live Albums must include the word "live", "songs", "segments" etc. with word game in it and preferbly the city or country name where the show took place- "Nine Lives of the CATmandu" or "Songseattle 1994" is OK.
- If you still can't think of names just use the band name. Ofcourse marking the albums with numbers is boring. Let's say your band is called "The Pencils" instead of having "The Pencils 1/2/3" try to make it more dramatic. After "The Pencils" (Self Title), you can have "Here are The Pencils", "Moving on with The Pencils", "Songs from the The Pencils" and "A Better Morning with The Pencils"

I ocassionally dream about front a humourous avant-prog band with two
possible names: Brown Leather Omnibus* or The Ocelots. If we called
ourselves BLO then the album titles would be a la 6 or 8, eg:
"Brown Leather Omnibus - The Posturing Sugar-Drawer"
If however, we were The Ocelots, our album titles would be very extreme examples of option 10. For instance:
"Germaine Greer Must Answer to The Ocelots!"
"Unfortunately, We Appear To Be The Ocelots."
"The Ocelots Have Filled Out Their Tax Return Forms As Best As They Can Manage"
Oooh how I'd love to front a very silly prog band... *sighs*
*Yes, pretty random words but they're not mine - it's a reference to The Goon Show.

You're forgetting groups made of virtuoso musicians who are all named like lawyer firms - bozzio, levins & stevens / emerson, lake & palmer/ torn, karn, bozzio / anderson bruford wakeman & howe / etc

Good point, lordoflight. I'm a lawyer myself (just a rookie in fact), but I remember that during my schooling we were to emulate the trial, I was playing the role of barrister and named my firm "Anderson Bruford Wakeman & Howe". One day I will open a firm with such name with my colleague who is also a great progger.
I guess Jon, Bill, Rick and Steve would have nothing against it.

Based on looking out of my windows I have a few great album names.
#01. 2 bums and a couple of bushes.
#02. Between the venetian blinds.
#03. These windows needs to be cleaned.
