My first topic! The Byrds are definitely not a progressive group. That said, this very single song, Eight Miles High, on the 1966 Fifth Dimension album sounds proglike to me everytime I listen to it. I even find in it a source of inspiration of the early Yes sound. I realize that it is an old song that many of you may not have listened to ever. You are right. YES even did a cover of their "I See You", and there's rich vocal harmonies in both bands. I think the first four (or something like that) BYRDS albums are more like psych and folk influenced 60's pop. I can't stand their country records, but I have their LP's before that phase emerged. Their Rickenbacker guitar sounds nice! |

covered a whole side of the original vinyl double set, and therefore a good example of a 60's band in heavy jammin' mode (and to some, over-indulgency to the hippies in the audience).
Also a reminder: the RCA version of 8 Miles High rather than that originally released, re-recording on the vinyl version on 5th Dimension, has long been held to be the definitive and superior version, when Roger McGuinn got heavily into the Coltrane/Love Supreme sheet of notes solo. It's called " The naked truth ". An excellent live acoustic album. The only tracks that don't work on the album are the popish ones (Radar Love...). |

The Naked Truth is awesome. The Golden Earring album "Live 77" I rate as one of my top ten Live albums. Their version of Eight Miles High is unforgetable on this album as are in fact all the tracks especially Vanilla Queen. -------------
