Howe.

Because they might be equal in talent, but Steve shows off more often.

Howe, but frankly speaking they both played equal role in creating prog (we should mention Bob Fripp and Dave Gilmour of course)

There's something speciall about Steve Hackett for me. The way he chooses to use the guitar is not completely "guitarish". Certainly, he has a very good hand on it, but the sound is much more oriented to the whole composition, not just guitar highlight.

Hackett is a fine melodicist and more importantly a musician with a unique
style, but when it comes to chops I'm afraid Steve Howe wipes the floor with
him.

Steve Howe is a far better player. Every time I listen to old Genesis I am never impressed by anything Hackett plays. I once met Max Bacon [GTR] and asked him who the better player was, without hesitation he said 'Steve Howe'.

I do prefer Yes as a band, yet Hackett as a guitarist. Howe is brilliant, no doubt, and I love his contributions to Yes dearly (And You and I, Awaken, Yours Is No Disgrace, Siberian Khatru...to name a few)  but Hackett's style in general is just that much more delicate, ambient and lush. He certainly pulls at the strings of my heart.

Howe can play a hell of a lot faster (not that that is saying much.) I feel that
Howe also knows a lot more than Hackett about the instrument and theory
(due to his solos.) I like Hackett's style better though but I had to vote for
Howe.

I find this poll a very hard to one to vote on. Hackett and Howe were my two favourite guitarists in the seventies, because Genesis and Yes were my top two bands, just above Floyd. Genesis were, and are, my faves of all time in fact, but not their post Hackett stuff. They are both tremendously talented, so I have to choose on the basis of their solo work. On my 18th birthday, (1977) I got Voyage Of The Acolyte and Beginnings off my sister. I played Voyage first, and was astounded at its brilliance. Then I played Beginnings, and I was so disappointed! Superb technique, of course, but little in the way of memorable melodies, and, as we all know, Howe can't sing. Hackett is not the best singer, but he is far better than Howe, and his harmonies especially are very good. His style of playing suits me more, and he is a master of composition, merging different styles effortlessly. I have all his work, either on vinyl, tape or cd, and love all of it, even the 'difficult' eighties albums, Cured, Highly Strung and Till We Have Faces. All have grown on me over the years. The only other Howe album I have is Turbulence, and I found that, whilst being better than Beginnings, still disappointing. I have seen Hackett twice, in '81 and earlier this year, on his acoustic tour. He was brilliant each time. Never seen Howe, but a mate of mine saw him with Yes a couple of years ago at the Albert Dock, and he said he was ok, but nothing special. Looked like he was just going through the motions. So my vote goes, of course to Mr Hackett, my favourite guitarist ever, who has stood the passage of time admirably. I still like Howe of course, as his work with Yes is dazzling. But these days I like Dave Gilmour and Nick Barrett more. It's all a matter of taste.

Those that voted for STEVE ....no fair but certainly both have offered enormously to the world of Prog. I have listened to Steve Howe recently and although I though the world of his guitar playing before on closer listening to some stuff he is not as good as I previously envisioned. Not to say he is bad...far from it, he still rates among the top. I noticed a lot of Country and bluegrass influences in his playing...like in Syberian Kathru, or "America" ...great stuff but it lacks the technique, the melodic passion, the sensitivity of Steve Hackett's guitar work. Both electrical and accoustic. And without  doubt Hackett is a far better accoustic guitar player...especially in his later stuff, the spanish and classical guitar studies. This measured against the clap, or some of Howe's solo albums.

Maybe Howe is more versatile, and better learned in Blues and rock guitar...both guitarist have a lot to offer the world, and placing them both in the same band certainly did not present us with a lot of sparks....GTR certainly cannot be said to be a memorable musical group.
