If I could change something in this world I would wipe out prejudice/hate/war.

Hard to tinker with such a complex system. Unforseen consequences.
Increasing the human capacity to understand the world...that would be a
good start. Without that, all changes are more or less trial and error.

Yeah, me too. For that to happen mankind would have to re-evaluate its priorities and stamp a higher value on human life. A new global political way of thinking would have to emerge, transcending all the differences between cultures, races and religions.
Cant see that happening. It's a shame we hate our planet and each other so much. All over patches of land and religous beliefs. It's a shame our happiness seems dictated by, as Douglas Adams would say, 'the movement of small green pieces of paper' (thats money, for the benefit of the un-enlightened)

How about removing the very concept of fossil fuels and nuclear power from history; mankind would have been forced to find or develop different sources of energy, no middle eastern crises based on oil-envy (no matter what the powers-that-be say the issues are...) and global warming would be blamed solely on the huge amounts of methane emitted by cows.

Ok. I'll be serious here, or at least somewhat serious. I would like to live in a world where every man, woman and child consider themselves to be first and foremost human beings, and for all cultural, racial, national and religious differences to take second place. Only when every white, black, hispanic, arab, hebrew, catholic, protestant, muslim, straight, gay, male, female, and so on, make our differences secondary in our mind, and realize that we all have the same genetic coding, will we ever truly attain peace in our world.
But since that's never gonna happen, I say kill everyone who isn't like me.

I certainly don't think you need to be from the U.S. to be irritated with Bush. He certainly produces enough irritation to go around. But, call me crazy, oh wait, I've already been called that. Ok. Call me paranoid, but I don't think it's a very good idea, in today's climate, what with terrorists and all, to be advocating the assassination of world leaders in a public forum. Not only could you get yourself in trouble, but you could get the forum in trouble. And since you called me paranoid, just remember that just because you're paranoid doesn't mean people aren't out to get you.

So what are you saying Doc? A machinist working in a machine shop should making as much as the CEO? BUZZ! WRONG! NEXT!
|
Posted By: The Doctor

You're right. The machinist does more work than the CEO and is more necessary to the functioning of the company. He should make more. But seriously, there is no reason for the CEO of the company to make somewhere around 100 times what the machinist makes. And I'm sorry, but my sympathies lie with the machinist who is struggling to make ends meet and not with the CEO who is struggling with trying to decide which yacht he wants. Oh, and "BUZZ!WRONG!NEXT!" isn't really a good debating method. While it gets across your disagreement, it does nothing to clarify or expound upon your position. Just a little tip from the Doc MTS. Free of charge. Although, since you're so fond of capitalism perhaps I should charge you for it.

Ok, no more "BUZZ!WRONG!NEXT!" I'm just in bit of a rank mood this week. Do you take credit cards?
But seriously, people have this misconception that CEOs just coast right into business without breaking a sweat. Far from it! Somestimes that's true but 90% of your business owners and millionaires are self made. They bust their humps and pay their dues. Look at Ross Perot, he started as a computer salesman after he got out of the Navy working 12-18 hours a day. It's pretty much the same story with most of them.

Re the machinist and the CEO, as one who spent over a decade as a legal assistant in various law firms and corporations, I can tell you for a fact that, without the secretaries, "copy shop" staff and receptionists, law firms and corporations would simply cease to function. These "lower class" workers are the "nerve center," the "lifeline," of any corporation or law firm. If secretaries, copy shop staff and receptionists "banded together" and went on strike, it would cripple American transnational corporations in under two hours.
Quite a thought, huh?

Well Hail to the Chief I say. She'd probably do a better job than our current "esteemed" leader.
Maani:
I worked as a law clerk while in law school, and even in the smaller firms I worked for, it was myself, the secretary and the runner who kept the law firm from collapsing in on itself. Really, the attorneys were superfluous. They were just there to collect the checks.
Trotsky:
Economically, I'm very much a working class liberal. While I don't think we should help those people who contribute absolutely nothing to society, except for maybe crime and having children out of wedlock, I think that we should help those who are productive members of society who are struggling or those who are trying to better themselves. Unfortunately, the government here works very hard at supporting the wealthy and supporting the bottom feeders of society and does absolutely nothing for those who are the backbone with which this society functions. It's time for a workers' revolution.

That's why it is really hard to vote in the US since the American system is really really biased towards the major two parties and smaller parties have 0.000000 % chance of winning anything.

That is very true. In our current tax system, the rich are taxed a lot, but they are still rich, the poor does not get taxed a lot, but reaches benefits, the middle class does not receive any benefits from the system what-so-ever. Unlike an European system where they get free healthcare, government insurance and good public transportation, the Middle Class in America gets nothing but more and more taxes. Sure, it is a good thing that Politicians give a taxcut to the rich, but they are forgetting us. The ones who earn money, but get nothing back...

I would says an end to man's desire of always more power and money, ecspecially money. That would ends so many things, lie most wars, a lot of polution, crime, all the dumb commercial stuff, well, everything that only exist to make a rich or powerfull man. Everything bad in society happens because of this.
If we could live in a sane world, it would be so great...

The U.S. is actually a one-party system - the "transnational corporate" party - with two branches, the RepubliCrats and the DemoCans. True, the DemoCans tend to try to do more for the lower and middle classes, while the RepubliCrats tend to be more about securing and maintaining wealth and power. However, no one should kid themselves: they both answer to the same corporate puppetmasters.

I can see some truth in that maani. But sometimes government inaction can be an appropriate action. Let's go back 70 years:
In his 1935 State of the Union Address, FDR spoke to a nation mired in the Depression, but still marinated in conservative values:
"Continued dependence" upon welfare, said FDR, "induces a spiritual disintegration fundamentally destructive to the national fiber. To dole our relief in this way is to administer a narcotic, a subtle destroyer of the human spirit."
Seems he was trying to tell us something that was unfortunatley not well heeded.
