Okay, call me crazy, but I just have to put this out there. When I think of progressive rock, Metallica isn't exactly the first band that pops into my head. But, there is an instrumental by Metallica on the Master of Puppets album called "Orion" that I think is pretty progressive. I wouldn't say measures up to the majority of progressive music that I've heard, but I think it just might fit into the category. My question to you: Has any one heard this song and if so, what is your opnion on it's "progressiveness"?

I know that the band isn't. I'm just talking about the song.

Yes this song (although it is not a "song" as such, as it is instrumental) bears lots of progressive elements, thus may be considered as prog. Same goes to Call of Ktulu (I think from Ride The Lightning album?).

In my opinion and justice for all is a technical album full of weird songs and many prog elements...If i had to choose one song i would choose the instrumental ..to live is to die..

My fav Metallica album for the exact reasons you mentioned. I've seen little glimpses of prog in some of their music and the thought intrigued me, so I figured I'd ask the opinion of my fellow prog fans. Perhaps I should have gone about it differently. Quite frankly, I was afraid of getting slaughtered........

Orion really isnt one of Metallica's proggiest songs.  It's very repetitive and simple, it doesnt develop a whole lot as the song goes on.  If you want progressive Metallica, look to "Call of the Ktulu", or many of the songs on "....And Justice for All", which is definitely their most progressive album.  The song "One" ranks probably in my top 10 songs, and definitely top 10 metal songs.  The way the story of the song develops along with the intensity of the music is incredible.

Of course, they're not a prog rock band, but its still tasty music for the most part.

The ...And Justice For All album is quite proggy, especially the title track.  Not that I'd consider them a prog band either, but numerous prog-metal bands have been influenced by them.

As usual,I agree with ya Useful.

I think And Justice for All is pretty proggy, especially the title track and Eye of the Beholder.

Flipping thru a sheet music book of "justice", i'd say judging by the time signatures it's prog.

And Justice for All, without any doubt, itīs a prog-metal album and To Live is To Die and One their masterpieces. I look back to the discography of Metallica from 83 to 89 and I don't know why bands like Queen or Deep Purple are in this site and Metallica doesnn't. I don't try to say that Metallica deserve the name of prog but doesn't deserve it Quuen or DP. All or nothing. If we are starting to include rock bands with prog elements, we must include them all.

(Can somebody tell me that "The Phantom of the Opera" by Iron Maiden isn't prog?)

I think only bands with "good name", respected by the most of the people like Radiohead are included in the site, being prog or not. But, oh my god, metal-stuff? People with long hair banging their heads? No, no, this insn't prog.

I'd say the Call of Ktulu is Prog Related.

Let me explain:

PROG FAMILY TREE

Blues married a genre called Psychelic, wait you'll love this and had a child called PROG.

PROG give birth to various children, Neo Prog, Post Prog and Prog Related etc.
