George Martin said Rubber Soul is a great album, recorded With big effort and will to experiment new sounds. And in his opinion Revolver is the second Part of Rubber Soul.
Which album do you prefer?

Both of these are the Beatles' best in my view; Tomorrow Never Knows wins it for Revolver.

Rubber Soul was the first of their albums I got after Sgt.Pepper so I'm voting for Rubber Soul.

In my personal ranking,
1. Rubber Soul, vote 8,5, Rating four stars 2. Revolver, vote 8,5, Rating four stars.
The difference is minimal, but having to choose, I put Rubber Soul first because at a strictly musical and melodic level, it seems better to me. Revolver is better as creativity in arrangements.

Revolver by far. Just about everything is astonshing on it
As for Rubber Soul, it's a great album overall, but some of the songs are less interesting: "Drive My Car", "What Goes On", "Run For Your Life".

Drive My Car? For me it's very good.
Less interesting:
Whato Goes On, I'm looking Through you.
Less interesting on Revolver:
Good Day Sunshine, Yellow Submarine.

Both really. I can't split them as these are 1 and 2 or joint 1st in my Beatles top 3, with Abbey Road at No.3. But Revolver takes it by a hair....just.

Yep, they basically sound like disc one and disc two of a double album. The second disc is a bit more flowery, but the core songs are of pretty similar quality.

rubber soul or Revolver.. the eternal question that only is topped by the immortal question. blond or brunette.
so in typical Micky tested... Micky approved manner I'd say both . But if God said you are sinning Micky and have to pick one (not counting Redheads which are under the Devil's jurisdiction)... I'd have to say brunettes... I mean there is some inteligence threre.. I mean.. Rubber Soul.

Micky.
In agreement with they are kind of like a double LP. That being said, I have to go with Rubber Soul. I am always astounded by the age that they were when they wrote In My Life (Lennon/McCartney in this case).

Love them both, but Revolver gets my vote...especially the full version including And Your Bird Can Sing, Dr Robert & I'm Only Sleeping, not the ridiculous original US version

Not really familiar with Rubber Soul (!)... And I, too, am a victim of the 28 min U.S.press of Revolver - I had a choice too, out of 3 or 4 versions, but I went for the U.S. one coz I liked the thick cardboard sleeve, only to find out when I got home, that several (excellent) tracks were left off. Hard to fully enjoy the truncated version.

I prefer Rubber Soul to Revolver as of the right now but I have gone back and forth for years on which one I like best.
Many people will point to Revolver because of the acid rock style of tape loop collages, backward tape music which was not the norm for rock bands in early 1966 and the pretty of the left-field instrumentation on songs as "Eleanor Rigby" or "Love You To". I could see how this had an influence on psychedelic/prog rock music on a whole as we are still talking 1966 and not 1969.
Rubber Soul to me is perfecting the folk and country influences with rock music they started on Beatles For Sale which interestingly predicts what The Byrds would make their own afterwards. The R&B influences are still there as well as George Harrison 12 string sound.
New sounds come from maybe the most heavy bass track in rock music at that time in "Think For Yourself" and the sitar "Norwegian Wood" which would a become major sound in psychedelic rock. You hear the prototypical lyrical hippie song "The Word" which contains some psychedelic sounding harmonium parts. Some of the songs have interesting uses of mode mixture like "Norwegian Wood" and "Think For Yourself.
Walter Everett comments on the book The Beatles As Musicians Revolver Through The Anthology that the experimental nature of both Rubber Soul and Revolver were the key albums that would influence musicians that would eventually create Progressive Rock
The American version of Rubber Soul was the one that caught the ears of people like Brian Wilson and Ray Manzarek for example.

Revolver. Rubber Soul has some lesser songs. The former is my 3rd favorite behind White Album and Abbey Road, while I also like MMT, Sgt. Pepper's and A Hard Day's Night more than Rubber Soul.

Revolver to me is a more complete album. Rubber Soul is a little hit & miss IMO. If you go with the American release ( add I've Just seen a face & remove Drive my car) I think it's closer but Revolver would still get my vote.

Rubber Soul - Revolver has never had as many standout tracks for me and I think it's a bit overrated. I like some of the later stuff but I have a soft spot for the mid-range era of albums (like Help and Soul).

Overrated? No stand out track?
I was actually alive when Revolver was released and my older brother had it....it is still my favorite Beatles album
Taxman?
Eleanor Rigby isn't a stand out track? It maybe the greatest composition that's ever been recorded in the history of popular music...20th and 21st century included (IMHO). I'm Only Sleeping? Love You To?
Here There Everywhere? Yellow Submarine...OK, it's a kids' song, but hey, it still stands out. She Said She Said? Good Day Sunshine?
And Your Bird Can Sing? For No One?
Doctor Robert......OK, I have found one that definitely doesn't stand out, Dr Robert is the weakest Beatles track of their entire career (IMHO)
I Want To Tell You?
Got To Get You Into My Life? Tomorrow Never Knows? .....Hmm some people have very high standards when it comes to standout tracks!

Everyone has different tastes, I can think of quite a few Beatle songs worse than Dr Robert, starting with Mr Moonlight.

I slightly prefer "Revolver" to "Rubber Soul" but love both. but my favorite album of The Beatles is "The White Album" due to the incredible versatility of tracks. a true prog album! in my opinion an album is prog even if every single song is simple but stylistically the album is all over the place. and that is the case with "The White Album".
another album like that is for example Robert Calvert's "Lucky Leif and the Longships"

Well I'm the kind of person who, for whatever reason, tends to be unmoved by some of the best-known and well-loved Beatles songs - and Eleanor Rigby is a very good example of that for me.
Also I don't actually mind Dr. Robert, but I have a soft spot for John's songs with those kinds of guitar chords.
John's songs in general I tend to prefer (he also had some great tracks on his solo albums, esp. the first 2). George's songs come in 2nd, but I don't tend to like much of his solo work. Paul comes in third, but some of his early solo is also decent.
I actually feel that both John and Paul's vocals were at their strongest on their first two solo albums - and I'm not just saying that because they're now isolated from their fellow beatles!

Argh! This thread has got The Word in my head and only Got To Get You Into My Life can drown out. That's better. Off the fence to avoid a tie. Rubber Soul is really very, very good. If Sgt. Pepper obscured Revolver then Revolver obscured Rubber Soul. Rubber Soul the better Beatles album ever. And then came the streak of Revolver, Sgt.Pepper then the White Album The Beatles and Abbey Road. Gets impossible to pinpoint exact difference. But Revolver.

Revolver is my fav album of theirs. I think there happened big step in Beatles music. There are no "Tomorrow Never Knows" , "Taxman", "Eleanor Rigby", "I´m Only Sleeping", "Love You To", "She Said She Said" & "Doctor Robert" in Rubber Soul. Of course it´s also better album than any Beatles made before that.

Rubber Soul has one of my absolute favorite Beatles songs Nowhere Man on it. Plus Drive My Car is fun, obviously great Norwegian Wood, The Word is 'good' ... classics like Girl, In My Life, MICHELLE.
But I agree with others who say Revolver is their best album. They also have all time(and I mean all time) great albums like Abbey Road and Sgt. Pepper's. Some might add their self-titled 'White Album.' There's a reason the Beatles are often cited as the greatest band ever, and I agree that they are.

Hard to say, what it would have been, if they had made reunion. I have heard in the seventies it was near, but one of them had refused (I believe it had been Lennon, my favorite from Beatles). I am glad both Stones & Who have continued, Stones made really great albums in the seventies, also nineties albums are really good, so did Who great albums in the seventies and also their two last albums are good too.
Anyway I think Beatles developed their music every year into Abbey Road, in Let It Be there was not much developing happening (yes I know it had recorded before Abbey Road) but has also some really great songs. But the biggest developing happened during the Revolver & Sgt.

I find Martin's view quite right: experimentation had already begun in Rubber Soul, with the sitar on Norwegian Wood, and the baroque-like keyboard solo on In My Life, not to mention Paul's fuzz on Think For Yourelf. That direction was probably stressed in Revolver by the return of Geoff Emerick to the egineer's chair. Anyway, the important thing is that the songwriting on both albums is equally strong and pregnant with revolutionary ideas.
