< ="text/">
Not having included Mick Karn into the
site is an outright crime. Not progressive enough? Even though Steve
Wilson played with them and Porcupine Tree's Richard Barbieri plays
with Karn on numerous delightful albums? None have been given the
respect of earning their right to prove their musical worth. Firstly,
Karn's bass playing is cosmic, a thorough lecture and seminar on the
art of playing the four-string monster. But it's also wildly
experimental and quite the ride! All his albums are tremendous
insights in compositional exploration , using his wobbly bass to
perfection , a proggier Jaco Pastorius in wanting to dominate the
arrangement and rightly so! It's modern, even avant-garde at times,
forged by a wanton desire to abandon the easy path of poppy success
and delve instead into complex , mind altering pieces, chiseled with
gentle bombast. You want to be a bass player? Well, this guy is a
master. Shocking, disturbing and sadly, tragic , Karn died a while
back, a blow to the musical universe of stars! He is up there with
Jaco , jamming on some cloud.
I suggest you try out his last album ,
2010's 'The Concrete Twin', a whirlwind slab of genius!
Any takers?

I agree totally !! I listened to Dali’s Car the other day and it blew me away. His work in Japan and as a solo artist is worthy. Definitely a one-of-a-kind. He should still be with us.

I can't believe he's not considered prog. He is one the best players. Right up there with Percy Jones and Geddy Lee. Watching him play bass in videos... He just makes it look so effortless. It's pure genius. Nobody sounds like Mick Karn.

^ For many of us, it may not be so much that's not considered Prog as he's never been properly formally considered. Normally that process is started in Suggest New Bands and Artists and if that topic is well prepared then the suggested teams take on the evaluation. What Prog category do people think he best fits? He has quite a few albums to consider for placement.

That's true, or being a Collaborator, Thomas can take it to one of the team threads directly for an evaluation as I'm sure he must know (and perhaps has done so). That said, I think a well prepared Suggestion thread is best, then bring that link to a team's attention. I haven't heard his music, which category best fits him do you think? As I look through his discography I see that he has quite a few albums so perhaps not an easy case....
I've moved this to General Music Discussions since the Progressive Music Lounges are not intended for such discussions of bands or artists not included in the bands/artists database (see http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=13082" rel="nofollow - CLICK for those that don't know. So I am treating this as more of an appareciation thread and to get people interested rather than as a formal suggestion thread. I might have moved this to Suggest New Bands but then it's better to start such a topic operating under the guidelines of how to create topics there. See http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=51990" rel="nofollow - CLICK for any who are new to this site and may be seeing this topic who are interested in suggesting bands.
Karn has been suggested at least twice before:
See http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=62047" rel="nofollow - http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=62047 from 2009 (for the collaboration Polytown) and http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=718" rel="nofollow - http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=718 but neither topic was presented with the kind of standards of research and info that we would certainly expect today or even long ago in terms of information, suggested Prog category, biographical info and links including links to music. I have not noticed any Suggestion threads that reference 'The Concrete Twin' (I see it as being a 2009 album at rateyourmusic, but don't know if it first came out before or after the 2009 Mick Karn Suggestion thread.
https://rateyourmusic.com/artist/mick-karn" rel="nofollow - https://rateyourmusic.com/artist/mick-karn He doesn't have as many reviews there as I might have expected (Concrete Twin only has one review). I see that The Concrete Twin is listed there as Jazz Fusion and Experimental Rock.
This is the first solo music that I've heard of his and I wasn't expecting to like much of his as much as I do:
Looking over all, it seems to me that he might be best suited for an Art Rock sub (either Crossover or Eclectic) or possibly Jazz Fusion based on some of his albums.
Unsing the genres listed at rateyourmusic:
- Titles (1982) is listed as Art Pop New Romantic, Synthpop, Dub
- Dreams of Reason Produce Monsters (1987) is listed as Art Pop, Progressive Pop Electronic
- Bestial Cluster (1993) as Jazz Fusion
- Polytown (1994 • David Torn, Mick Karn & Terry Bozzio) as Progressive Rock, Jazz Fusion, Modern Classical, Avant-Garde Jazz, Free Jazz
- The Tooth Mother (1995) as Jazz Fusion
- Liquid Glass (1998 • Yoshihiro Hanno Meets Mick Karn) as Nu Jazz, Acid Jazz Drum and Bass
- Each Eye a Path (2000) as Progressive Rock
- Each Path a Remix & Each Eye a Remix (2003) as [none listed]
- More Better Different (2004) as Jazz-Funk Trip Hop
- Three Part Species (2006) as [no genre listed]
- The Concrete Twin (2009) as Jazz Fusion Experimental Rock
--------------------------------------
I like this Steve Jansen / Richard Barbieri / Mick Karn track:
Pretty big discography now, so may not be an easy evaluation and the more thorough leg work to help the evaluators I guess the more likely he could get included.

Well lets see now.
Richard Barbieri - member of Porcupine Tree. PROG
Steve Jansen - played with members of yellow magic orchestra, and also David Sylvian's little brother. (PROG ENOUGH)
All of the above have played/co conspired with Steve Wilson.
Also the very fact that Mick Karn's records can't be put into any specific category (acid jazz, prog, new wave, romantic, pop) should right away classify him as Prog on this website.

Fantastic musician. His last album is certainly one of his best with his collaboration with Yoshihiro Hanno that I love very much too.
