Hi, I was wondering if anyone could recommend me an album by the band If.  Your help is definitely appreciated.  I just want to know what album I should start out with.  Thanks.

I presume you mean the jazz rock/brass rock If - there was a later band who pinched the name?

As far as I'm aware there have been 4 CD issues, including  If and If2 (Island/Edsel), there is a rather good compilation Forgotten Road: The Best Of If, which pulls in tracks in from If , If 2, If3.  And a live album, which as far as I know has only been released on CD, If Europe '72 (Repertoise Records).  United Artist contracted If after they left Island Records, releasing 3 albums on vinyl  (I'm told) but have only heard If4 and Teabreak Over - the latter lacks most of the original players and by far the worst album under the If banner. Dick Morrisey went on to work with Jim Mullen (formerly AWB) releasing Cape Wraith (Harvest records) under their joint names, and then a run of successful jazz dance albums as the Morrisey-Mullen Band. Alas Dick Morrisey died 2 or 3 years ago. Jim Mullen has spent much of the last decade playing/recording straight  jazz (a couple with Gary Husband on Jazzprint Records, who you wouldn't recognise as either the Level 42 or the Allan Holdsworth Group drummer)

Sold 4 If LP (helping my brother with a clear out at 6 weeks ago) to a UK second hand vinyl specialist, Left Legged Pineapple - talk to either Jason Wright or Charlie:

(just noted 3 left and a considerable mark up on what they paid me!!)
