Subject: 70's Obscure Prog Bands

So I am looking to find some obscure prog rock groups from the typical golden era.
-I will be including links to these groups' pages on Prog Archives (if available) and wiki if I can't find them anywhere else on here-
Bands like Babylon, Smoke Rise, GoodThunder, or Elizabeth, who quickly vanished right after their only album, or never achieved any wide recognition.
I'm into collecting and attempting to preserve the music of these groups, to keep them from being forgotten and lost into the void.
Any suggestions?
I will be creating a list up here for other people as new ones come along.
List:
Babylon (1 album from 78) http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=35 Elizabeth (1 album from 68) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elizabeth_(band) GoodThunder (1 album from 72) http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=4266 Smoke Rise (1 album, 72) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoke_Rise_(band) Museo Rosenbach (3 album, 73, 2000, 2013) http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=254 Mandrake Memorial (3 albums, 68-69) http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=5382 Savage Grace (3 albums, 69, 71, 90's) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savage_Grace_(progressive_rock_band) SRC (3 albums from 68-70, and a demo release in 93) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SRC_(band) Glass (no releases till 2000's, recordings done in 70's) http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2058

That's great! Glad to know they are back in business. I only thought they had released the older recordings.

From 1975, Fireballet. A band from New Jersey that met with limited and almost cult like success for the short time they were around. This album was produced by Ian McDonald (of King Crimson fame).

I'm sure you'll find a lot of these kinds of bands on the vintage prog website (vintageprog.com). Just click on lp reviews.
I never heard much Fireballet but I have a FB t shirt if anyone wants it. Just send me a message.

Thanks for them! Actually through their Archive review, I managed to find two other bands we can add to this list as well. I will be obtaining their discographies soon.

So, when I logged on, the main page had a new review by a reviewer goin under the moniker "VianaProghead" of an album called Pictures from a group called Island.
All new to me, so probably fairly obscure. Album was from 1977. Maybe a little after your desired time frame but probably still worth checking out. I YouTubed the album and really enjoyed it.

That's an album that has a cult following around here. I think it's a bit of a masterpiece - quite singular, a dark and unsettling vision expressed via a unique sound world. It's had at least a couple of CD releases so not sure whether it qualifies as genuinely obscure.

I love hunting down obscure 70's "one album wonders" prog. Here's some of my favorites that haven't yet been mentioned (BTW, Fireballet mentioned earlier released an awful 2nd album called Two, Too in '76 but their 1st '75 album is a masterpiece).
Pentwater - Out of the Abyss (1976)
Pentacle - La Clef Des Songes (1975)
Banzai - Hora Nota (1974)
Esperanto - Danse Macabre (1974)
Lift - Caverns of Your Brain (1974)
Spektakel - s/t (1974)
The Spirit of Christmas - Lies to Live By (1974)
Et Cetera - s/t (1976)
Mirthrandir - For You the Old Women (1976)
Shadowfax - Watercourse Way (1976) (they retooled the band and became huge on the new age Wyndham Hill label in the 80's under the same name, but this '76 album was their only prog album so I consider it obscure)
Atmosphera - Lady of Shallot (1977)
Nightwinds - s/t (1979)
Netherworld - In the Following Half Light (officially released 1981, but a version with only the prog songs had been floating around since 1979 so I consider them 70's obscure prog)
Oniris - L'Homme Voilier (1979)

I managed to get my hands on a good number of those albums. So far Pictures, and Caverns Of Your Brain are my favorites.
I really dig dark and atmospheric prog music (hence why Babylon is one of my favorite bands, despite only having the one album).
If you can think of more please send them here. I am wanting to build a little catalog here for everyone to use as a reference point, so that these marvelous bands won't be lost to the ages.

Even though this is stretching the 1 album only theme of the thread as Pulsar has 4+ releases, the above makes me think this might be a great fit. I consider it the most dark & atmospheric prog album from an obscure band I have:
Pulsar : Halloween (1977)

I don't mind if they have multiple releases. This is mostly just for obscure bands to get a bit of the limelight.
I've listened to a little bit of Pulsar before. Glad you jogged my memory about them again. Just went out and got their whole discography. I'll be putting in a day for their music.
Right now I am only missing the discographies of seven of these bands. Gonna have fun spending the next few weeks tracking them down (basically building myself a Prog museum at this point).
Thanks heeps for making me aware of Island btw. Just finished listening to Pictures for a second time, and will be blasting it for probably the next month straight. Sssssoooooo good.

Seeing as you found Islands' Pictures to be obscure then the list is long - very long indeed. I started making one but decided to throw in the towel after these (I can literally list half of my record collection):
Semiramis - Dedicato a Frazz Bachdenkel - Lemmings Archimedes Badkar - Tre Cervello - Melos Björn J:Son Lindh - Från Storstad til Grodspad Bobby Beausoleil - Lucifer Rising Carol of Harvest - s/t Rocky's Filj - Storie die Uomini e Non Invisible - s/t Duncan Mackay - Chimera Arachnoïd - s/t Kebnekaise - ll Carmen - Fandangos in Space Here & Now - Give and Take Secret Oyster - Sea Son Arbete & Fritid - s/t
Safe to say you should probably play around with the filters: http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?salbumtypes=1 Set it to only artists from x country or maybe make a search with albums that have been ranked less than 20 times or something to that effect. You will most likely stumble onto thousands upon thousands of "new" prog acts from the 70s. The trick is NOT to be deterred by foreign lingos

I'm always okay with long lists lol. Tis the purpose of this thread, to create a nice long catalog.
Thank you for your addition. I will make sure to update the OP tomorrow (3 AM here in Michigan).
I'll try and check out as many of those as possible.

No worries then. Btw I see you've updated your OP and that you are lloking more specifically for prog bands that are not listed on PA. I think we are close to having them all here actually maybe with the exception of a few here and there, but I just wanted to point out that threads concerning themselves with acts that aren't featured on PA are moved to General Music Discussions. Just an fyi;) Better just stick with bands that are already here. General music discussions are filled to the brim with threads that go by swiftly with maybe a response or two. Threads in the designated prog part of the forum have a better chance of getting exposure.
Once we get into the fringe bands that flirted around with prog or indeed just an artsy expression, we open up to a plethora of 70s bands that most likely all have been suggested for inclusion and rejected. Trust me we've been around - so much so that folks even start suggesting acts like Elton John, The Tubes and The Velvet Underground for PA.
We've all got our own ideas about these things and as a consequence of this also a couple of bands we personally feel belong on PA somewhere but ultimately were rejected. Most collabs have been through this as well.

I also love the 'one hit wonders' and 'obscure bands' like that from the 70's...though I don't consider Pulsar obscure per se .....and a few of the others are fairly well known among prog fans.
I'll look to see if I can find any other odd ones in my collection...I had a friend who burned me some really obscure things on cd a few years back.
One that just popped into my head was...Artcane-Odyssey 1977 (PA has a page on it...obscure but interesting)

Pulsar is fantastique! I hope you enjoy them...the 1st 3 70's albums are brilliant, after that the 1988 reunion album Gorlitz is still cool, but definitely a big step down...the 2007 'double reunion' album Memory Traces has slipped a little further. Hurray for the magic of obscure 70's prog Since multiple releases aren't a problem, I'd add these other obscure 70's albums to your list:
Ethos - Open Up (1977)(their other album was mentioned earlier, both cool, but I like this one better)
Yezda Urfa - Sacred Babboon (1976)
Mona Lisa - Grimaces (1975), Le Petit Violon de Monsieur Gregoire (1976), Avant Qu'll ne Soit Trop Tard (1977)
Synopsis - Minuit Ville (1979)
Terpandre - s/t (1978)
Atoll - L'Arignee Mal (1975)
FM - Black Noise (1978)
Khan - Space Shanty (1972)
Ange might or not be considered obscure as they're probably the biggest 70's French prog band and still active. I think someone new to prog would likely have never heard of them, but it's your call if you wish to include them. If so, these are what I consider their "must have" 70's albums:
Caricatures (1973), Le Cimetiere des Arlequins (1974), Au Dela Du Delire (1974), Emile Jacotey (1975), Guet Apens (1978)

There's another good obscure seventies US band called Easter Island. Their first album is hard to find these days unfortunately but I had it a long time ago on cd(it was issued by ZNR records; the same label that did Mastermind)and it's a really good one. Some parts are like Gentle Giant while others are more Genesis and Yes and maybe a bit of Uriah Heep(especially in the vocal dept). Cathedral was another great US band who had one album in the seventies called "stained glass stories."

For those who don't know, Greg Walker runs the synphonic website where he sells prog cds. He's one of the main prog vendors in the business.

Greg's said in the past Banco's his favorite band. But he loves Eloy probably as much.
Nice to see Pablo "El Enterrador," Celeste and East on there. But I'd quickly swap out that Wakeman album for Six Wives or (my preference) Criminal Record. I'd also pick Nuova Era's very next album Il Passo del Soldato (a stunner).
Same for Crimson. I'm surprised he didn't pick Court or even LTiA.
I'd also replace Spock's Beard with another band/album — even Pendragon's The Jewel.
Finally: I'm severely disappointed by the exclusion of Goblin's Roller. I'm going to have to talk with Greg about this, lol.

^Interesting. I've heard him say that Eloy is his favorite band. Maybe that swapped places for his number one. I know that Latte E Miele's "Passio...." is his favorite album or one of his very favorites at least.

He does have the right Marillion album, though!
I agree with you about that Marillion album even though it took a while to grow on me back in the early spring of 92 when I bought it on cassette. I personally think "the light" might be Spock's Beards best album(at least of the NM era). I admittedly haven't heard much post NM SB. Yeah, I don't think Poseidon is KC's best either although it is very under rated. I would pick LTIA over it and I'd imagine most would pick "red" over it. As for Pendragon's "the jewel" I haven't heard it but I have heard it's rather slow and boring(not sure if that is true or not). No IQ on the list though. How about "ever?" As for "Wakey" I actually don't know Criminal Record. Maybe that's one of his last really good ones? I personally would take "Myths and Legends...." over the two before it although "Six wives" is a very good instrumental album.

Based on an email around the time Eloy's latest CD was issued, I think that is definitely the case now!

IQ's Subterranea is on the list. I'd also swap that out for Ever.
Criminal Record is a marvelous achievement. It's one of Rick's best outings. But I'd also check out 1984, Out There and the pair of Retro albums he did, at the very least. He also has a few superb solo piano records to his credit, like The Piano Album and Night Airs (the best of the Airs series).

Oops. That's right. Subterranea is on there. No Flower Kings though. No Porkie Tree either.
I had "country airs"(I think it was)on cassette a long time ago. Nice piano music. I also recommend Moraz and Bruford's "music for piano and drums" if you like piano stuff. I don't know 1984 but I did hear Time Machine I think. His solo catalog is very hit or miss but when you have a catalog that big I suppose that's to be expected. I'm not an expert on Rick's music but based on what I do know the majority of his best stuff seems to be from the seventies. His return to the center of the earth was not too bad though. Bonus points for having Patrick Stewart narrate it.

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Easter Island feature at one point, former Bloodrock lead guitarist Lee Pickens? Excellent, and under-rated player.

Still one of my all time favorite albums. Even their first album was very good with an excellent version of LIAR.
I bought, I think, 3 different copies of that album. I had that cover (and Flash's first) on my walls for many years ... like 25 or 30. It was, and is, my tribute to HIPGNOSIS and their art, but above all, these covers always told you how good the music was. And the inside cover of that album, was even better, if not as good ... all band members were singing with their eyes closed!
To update the listing with some of the stuff I like ... I really will have to go through my spreadsheet for Space Pirate Radio shows I have.
Edgar Broughton Band - OORA and BANDAGES
The Groundhogs - CROSSCUT SAW and BLACK DIAMOND (even though these could be considered power blues and such, in many ways, due to the sound itself, these are very progressive and strong.)

Doug, you know I share your enjoyment of that album. And, as I think you know, a few of the band's members played on Gordon Giltrap's album "Live at Oxford", which may well be his best. And if you like Giltrap, check out Paul Brett, with two great albums from the late 1970s - "Interlife" and "Eclipse."
A band that is unjustly obscure and is prog folk, in Strawbs' vein, is Decameron. I think their best in "Third Light" from 1975
Other prog folk gems
Amazing Blondel - very Elizabethan sounding, any of "Evensong", "Fantasia Lindum" and "england" are great
Dan Ar Braz (Breton) - "Douar Nevez" and also a brilliant album called "Acoustic"
Cano - "Au Nord de Notre Vie"
Garolou - "Lougarou" or "Garolou"
Haizea - "Hontz Gaua" (Basque)
Itoiz - "Itoiz" and "Ezekiel (also Basque - the first is a near masterpiece, the second IS a masterpiece)
Horslips - any of "Happy to Meet Sorry to Part", "The Tain" and "The Book of Invasions"
Los Jaivas - "Alturas de Machu Picchu" (from the 80s but fully 70s styled)
Nigel Mazlyn Jones - "Ship to Shore"
Perry Leopold - "Christian Lucifer" - another one that was recommended but is just too good to pass over
Malicorne - "Almanach"
O.W.L - "Of Wondrous Legends"
Pearls before Swine - "The Use of Ashes"
Pererin - "Haul Ar Y Eira" and "Teithgan". Don't delay on these!
Secos & Molhados - II
Spirogyra - the UK folk group not the jazz group - any album
Alan Stivell - hardly obscure unless you don't know anything about Brittany - "Renaissance de la Harpe Celtique", "Reflets", "Chemin de Terre"
Tir na Nog - "Tear and a Smile"
Sally Oldfield - "Water Bearer"
The German symph band "Anyone's Daughter" appeared in the late 70s and their first album, "Adonis", is often regarded as their best. Some of the work on subsequent albums has credited with inventing neo prog, but I think it's more crossover. Personally I love all the albums, but after Adonis you may want to reach for one of their live recordings
Other German bands I really like are
Carole of Harvest - s/t (they are prog folk)
Eden - Erwartung (prog folk)
Midnight Circus - s/t (prog folk)
Sundenfall II- s/t (prog folk)
Grobschnitt - you can't go wrong with any of "Ballerman", "Rockpommel's Land" and "Solar Music Live"
Rebekka - "Phoenix"
Minotaurus - "Fly Away"
Amenophis - s/t (from 1983 but may as well be from 1970s)
Madison Dyke - Zeitmaschine
Pell Mell - pretty much any of their 1970s albums, though I fine "From the New World" a bit much
Zomby Woof - "Riding on a Tear"
Mythos - "Dreamlab"
Jane - "Between Heaven and Hell"
Troya - "Point of Eruption"
others
Earth and Fire- "Song of the Marching Children", also "Atlantis"
Tai Phong - s/t, not respected much here but really beautiful symph
Asia Minor - "Between Flesh and Divine". I know I saw this mentioned above but it's simply too good to miss, even though I think it's from the early 1980s
Pentacle - "La Clef des Songes"
Celeste -"Principe di un Giorno"
Jade Warrior - "Floating World" or "Way of the Sun"
Illusion (the original Renaissance reformed around 1976) - "Out of the Mist" and s/t

What about Max Webster? Used to tour with Rush back in the day. Kinda' prog-ish.

Yes, Prism from Japan. Prism, Second Thought/Second Move and Prism Live are the best of their albums. These guys probably opened the door for prog/fusion in Japan. Alot like Brands X and Return To Forever. Worth seeking out.

Hi,
There were a couple of things on the HARVEST label that showed up in different countries that were really nice, although at times, thinking of them as "progressive" has a way of sidestepping the quality of the music, and its own beauty ... it's not like we have to compare all women to Venus de Milo, right?
I remember things like the early KAYAK, which was outstanding, ALQUIN that had excellent material all the way to "Best Kept Secret", and then on the German side, I remember TANNED LEATHER, which I can not remember very well, except that it was very nice, and CHERUBIN which also had at least a couple of very nice pieces on that album.
I can not think, right now, of things from France or Italy, but that is just an example of some of the different things out there. And, of course, we must not forget the SADISTIC MIKA BAND, which was excellent for its 3 albums (and the Live one without Mika), and sadly went out with a wimper ... though Mr. Takanaka is still going and playing a lot. But others out of it, IMAI had a very nice album even if it felt a bit too PF'ish at times, but at least it did not sound like Kitaro, and of course, one of the folks that we have not heard a lot of but had a lot of interesting music ... STOMU YAMASH'TA ... the thing most know about him is the GO albums, and those are nowhere near as good as his other stuff, and his later material was not even released, like the piece found later on video, I have never found on an album and it was very nice.

Interesting post, mosh, thanks...
ALQUIN are one of my favorite Continental European groups, hailing from the Netherlands, and I have their first two studio albums, and luv em to bits!
Btw, TANNED LEATHER featured at one point, TRIUMVIRAT's Juergen Fritz, doing keys on their first album! Very tasteful material, but oddly, more country rock sounding.
I have heard only one of YAMASH'TA's albums, and it featured in part some keys playing by J. Peter Robinson from QUATERMASS. very well done. I believe it was released in '71, though don't recall it's title.
SADISTIC MIKA BAND I know by name only, and will have to rectify that!

Hi,
The listing here for the 70's stuff is almost exactly like a listing of bands and material from Guy Guden's original SPACE PIRATE RADIO that started in Santa Barbara in January 1974. The listing of those bands, by many folks here, is almost a crazy copy of the listing of stuff played in the Space Pirate's shows ... and I think it was in the middle of 1974, apparently someone made a comment, or joke, about the number of bands played, and by that time, he had already played over 100 of those bands, and we're not talking ... just a song ... almost all of the albums got the full treatment ... it's just a shame that the listing for those shows can not be shown (it's not complete), because they are one of the most important records that ... IT WAS NOT OBSCURE ... it was out there, and we just needed to hear it ... and many of us did!

Thanks for posting the track for me, had a go at editing my post to get a You tube link to 'Brainstorm' but didn't quite work.
Yes, see quite a link to '60's psychedelia, and maybe Spontaneous Combustion sounded a bit too outdated for the 1970's prog rock crowd and band didn't quite make it to space rock. Will have to look them up in Greg Lake's autobiography.

Indeed, just found a long feature on Spontaneous Combustion here : Fascinating reading. Particularly like the account of how a Spontaneous Combustion track ended up - in error- on the 2012 re-issue of 'Tarkus' as 'Unknown Ballad' . Seems that a final line up of the group ended up recording in West Germany under the name 'Time'in 1975 with a Krautrock producer, making an album that was compared to early Yes.

Here's a couple of obscure ones from Washington State:
The Guild - I recommend "Susurrus" - folky, but definitely the prog runs strong in it. Late '70's if I recall.
Madrigal - "Waiting" - not sure if this was '70's or '80's - but they were *good.* Spokane area band. Heavy Genesis/Gentle Giant vibe, but they had their own sound and lots of talent. I think they had a record deal with Musea back in the day.
Another obscure prog band (from Connecticut, I think), was Holding Pattern.
Edited to add: Also, "Milkweed" - another obscure prog outfit (Canadian, I think).
