Prodigal (from In Absentia) has been one of my big favourites for some time now, although Waiting was the one that really got me to sit up and take notice of PT late last year.

Although it is one of their poppy songs, and its guitar solo has caught some flak, I just love "Where Would We Be", including that feedback solo.  I just love it, melody, arrangement, lyrics coming together effectively

WTF!!!?? Man! I was just thinking a couple of hours ago to start a thread about Porcupine Tree's best song. Guess you were faster than me, toothpick2112.....

Anyway...... these are my favorites:

* Baby Dream In Cellophane (the first song I heard from them, love at first-hearing)
* Prodigal
* Gravity Eyelids
* Hatesong

In Absentia is by far their greatest album, IMO.

My favorites change constantly, but as of now they are:

Idiot Prayer, Mellotron Scratch, Halo, Deadwing. My favorite album of theirs is by far Signify.

Trains is the greatest one... with these clapping hands effect and great lyrics (never found the link between them and the rest of the album... which is supposed to be a concept one) anyway this intense song make me feel weird everytime I listen to it... One of my favorite ever!

Why would we hate you for that?!?

Arriving... is probably my favorite track right now too. Though I have yet to discover further back than the last two albums, so that could change.

  • Gravity Eyelids
  • Blackest Eyes
  • 3
  • Strip the Soul
  • Arriving Somewhere but not here
  • Waiting
  • Trains

I don't have a big collection of PT - I like everything they have done (so far) "In Absentia" is my favourite album (for now)

I find it much easier to name a single best songs by the band which is far from being favorite. I have all studio albums by PT plus "Coma divine Live in Rome" (the best by them). However I do not consider them anything close to genius - just OK band, playing just OK music, quite listenable to - that's all. My favorite song by PT is "Radioactive Toy" - mesmerising stuff, and sounds live even better that in studio.

anything but "Jupiter Island"!

really, by far it's "Fadeaway" for me, and easy second is "Stars Die". But these are right behind it:

*The Sky Moves Sideways (both phases)
*The Sleep Of No Dreaming
*Russia On Ice
*Radioactive Toy
*Nine Cats
*Heartattack In A Layby (but I wish it was longer, it just starts creating an epic landscape, then, bam!, it's over.)
*Open Car (uh, this one could've been elabortated upon too, but still, it's sooooo good.)

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

I like a lot their last album, it's why i'm gonna say : "Arrival somewhere but not here"

But, my fave album is "Stupid Dream", so "Dont hate me" is one of my best.

Finally, I begin to listen to Procupine with "In Abstentia" and "Lips of Ashes" is my favourite on this one.

Good question and very difficult to answer.

I like there long suites like Sky Moves Sideways and Voyage 34, but you have to be in the mood for them.

The more recent stuff - Halo, Deadwing, Arriving Somewhere But Not Here, Open Car, Trains, Hatesong, A Smart Kid, .3 and Waiting [Both Phases] are my favourites.

Excellent Band, can't wait to see them in Manchester, in December.

great, thanks for mentioning 'Dislocated Day', I forgot to list that. An under-appreciated P.T. song!!! ('The Sky Moves Sideways' remains the best P.T. album, but that's another thread for another time...)
