Hi Everyone

I’m very new to the Prog scene, but I’ve not felt this energised by music for some time.  I’ve started on the journey and I’m enjoying every minute.

I grew up around the punk/new wave scene (I’m 54), my first gig was the Buzzcocks when I was 14 at the local music venue (no longer there).  I then really got into The Jam and the mod scene, I am still a bit of a mod really.

Being into music I’d obviously heard of a lot of the prog music on the telly, radio and friends, but I’ll be honest it just washed over my head, my ears were just not tuned in.

That all changed two summers ago when I got the chance to see King Crimson in Berlin.  A relative of mine is friends with Jakko Jakszyk whom I met after the concert and is a really nice generous chap.  I spent the concert sat next Budgie from Siouxsie and the Banshees fame, who was really friendly too.  KC were amazing and that’s when the world of prog opened up to me.

I got the top 100 prog album list from this website and another one from Discogs and I’m slowing working through those albums and building my prog collection.  Actually managed to see Caravan in concert at the end of last year and they were great.

Loving King Crimson, Yes, Genesis (early), Jethro Tull, Camel, Wishbone Ash, Van Der Graaf, Gentle Giant, Pink Floyd etc.  Two years ago I would have just turned my nose up at these bands – what a fool! I’ve now seen the light.

PJ

Wow, quite a journey, that's unusual.   If anyone will convert someone it's Crimson, especially the modern incarnation and especially live... like the Grateful Dead of prog.

Welcome to PA.

^^  Hi londonwelsh and welcome to the forum!

There's so much to explore that your journey could last many years...and that's a good thing!

Given your background in punk and new wave, eventually you should get around to hearing some bands that combined prog and punk elements...and I would start with Cardiacs. You might hate them, or they might just change your life. If you do hate them, it's worth giving them another try every couple of years, 'cos your head might have changed.

Welcome! To me prog was earlier than punk, but anyway few years after I found prog, punk become very important to me and still is as important as prog, specially post punk/new wave bands like Joy Division, Bauhaus, Siuoxsie, the Cure, Pere Ubu, the Pop Group, the Raincoats etc.

Don´t know are you already familiar with Minutemen & Nomeansno, but I think they´re ones that mix very great way punk & prog/jazz-elements!

Also, you seem to have a great taste in prog (IMO), Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Genesis, Yes, Caravan, Can are my big faves too!

Welcome! It's funny, I've been into Prog for a few years now but I've been slowly getting into the New Wave genre :)
