Many great guitarists on this list, but Hackett takes my vote without a doubt.

Howe > Vai > Hillage

Another honourable mention that isn't included here would be Gaines, from Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I did have Steve Miller on there but ultimately left him out. I thought about some of the others too but I wanted it to be prog guitarists. I probably should have left off Steve Hunter but kept him since he played on that first Peter Gabriel album(as well as the one guitar speak album).

Mr Hackett for me. However, it takes a list like this (including some omissions) to realise just how many great guitarists are called Steve! Very surprising.

Hackett with Rothery an incredibly close second and Morse a close third.

Hackett has done the astounding job of getting better, phenomenal as the years have gone by.

Hackett easily, though I now have a soft spot for Rothery after seeing Marillion at the Cropredy festival.

Up until maybe two years ago I probably would have said Steve Howe but now Steve Hackett is my number one favorite. Howe would be two and then Fripp and Lifeson tied for third.

I love Howe and Hackett equally but voted Hackett as he's doing what I think he should be doing at this point--making new good music and playing perfect renditions of classic Genesis---Howe is fronting a weak version of Yes which is not a good career choice and doesn't showcase his talent.

Bring back GTRLOLBig smile!!!
