Topic: Mostly Autumn - Fakes or Greats?

Subject: Mostly Autumn - Fakes or Greats?
Date Posted: September 12 2005 at 04:22

I've read older topics on Mostly Autumn's qualities or lack of them. However, there wasn't a valid argument on either side explaining why they are so good or bad. They have been called the next big thing. However, seven years have passed since their debut album, and still few know them. Others regard them as fakes, bad musicians with false publicity (like the Pink Floyd comparisson). Others just regard them as a nice but almost amateur band. Their music is accused of being unoriginal and repetitive, and above all, boring.

For me, I have to say I enjoy this band a lot. I would't dare to call them the future of prog (like Wobbler have been called, IMO quite fairly), just as I would never dismiss their prog sound.

I do admit to prefering earlier albums to recent efforts (although I haven't heard The Last Bright Light, apart from some songs of the album that I eventually caught live). The later albums are all becoming, to my ears, more hard-rockers than prog-rockers. This, however, does not make them mainstream.

As for the musicians, I personaly hail Bryan Josh as one of my favorite guitar players, although I admit his voice did lower the quality of a lot of the songs, as oposite to Heather Findlay's singing (however, on the last MA album Josh seems to be singing a lot better, in a different tone).

As for the music, MA are acused of dragging the songs for ages, and of hiding cheesy ballads with a 2 to 5 minute guitar solo. Actually, I don't disagree. And I like that. I only wished some of my favorite moments in prog, such as some Genesis and Floyd's songs, could go on and on. Because to me, thats what MA are capable of doing. Extending the pleasure of listening to good music.

Other opinion is that you have to see MA live to really be a fan. This summer I had that chance, despite allready being a fan and having purchased some albums and a couple of DVD's. And I have to say that, at a time when I was feeling disappointed about their musical directions, that concert really lifted my spirits up. To this day I regard it as the best concert I ever attended, and the best on I ever saw, If one includes recorded or televised concerts.

Please be free to comment on this band. I hope this poll will provide clarification on Mostly Autumn's true status on the Progressive Rock world.

Pretty good, but not something I'd listen to all that often. I love Shrinking Violet though. By which I mean the song, of course

They're not a bad band, but not a great one either - pleasant melodic
rock with a few minor progressive touches. The occasional cut has shown
the potential to do far more and produce something genuinely
progressive, but for the most part easy-on-the-ear neo-prog seems to
be their bag.

I love their music but it's not like they're the new Pink Floyd or anything!

Yeah, I like them as a concert band (I've seen them at least 4 times, I think)...and owned their first few albums, but found I didn't listen to them after a while...they seem to fall into the Iona camp, in that they are good, but not really prog enough for me....

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

As far as i am personally concerned- I like them very much! Their music may be seen as pretentious and boring, but it always depends on Your approach towards them. Besides, saying that they are as dull as ditch-water is equivalent to alleging that Pink Floyd is nothing more than 'cheerlessness' (since we can find loads of influence of PF in MA pieces)

I'm reserving judgement at the moment. I got "Storms over still water" expecting lots of prog-folk with female vocals, violin and flute but they seem to have gone all metal. It's good in places but not brilliant. I guess I need to go back to their earlier stuff.

A really brilliant band

Absolutely the best band currently active. A live performance is unforgettable (especially their Christmas party at the Lion at Blakey).

No, they are not the next Pink Floyd, and should stop trying to be. They are the first Mostly Autumn and that's great. IMO The Last Bright Light is easily the best album recorded by anyone in any genre since 1976, just about flawlessly perfect in every respect. The Spirit of Autumn Past is not far behind. Some of their later stuff is less consistent, but I have enjoyed it just the same. When Heather Findlay sings, God listens, and Bryan Josh has composed some of the finest bits of prog ever. Pretentious? Less so than Yes, ELP and many other bands who attract (deservedly) much praise on this site. And unlike Dream Theater, Rush and other much-revered bands, they are happy to be called prog.

Oh, and I hadn't heard of them until I joined this site despite living in York (where they come from) for 27 years. They deserve more publicity. Because they're worth it.

Well there's not a section for a little bit of everything, is there?

Mostly Autumn is very hit and miss, although clearly their last few albums show their Fleetwood Mac side much more than their Pink Floyd side. Maybe they'll change again!

I've Listen to the Lst Bright Light and felt boreness. It sounds repetitive and as "good" as a best of vol. 2 from the Alan Parsons Project (despite the different sound, of course. I'm talking about the "effect" that their music makes on me).

I can1't judge them as a live act, but watching them on the Inside Pink Floyd DVD ( an awful piece of cr*p that my wife gave me trying to be seductive) makes me think about the feel coldness of certains musicians that are technically good - even brilliant.

I can't recommend this band to anyone as the salvation of prog rock, neither as a good carbon copy of any giant.

Probably better starting point is one of their live DVDs, for example, "The Story So Far...". IMO band's live shows have more energy than their studio efforts. Listen to their music more carefully - though influences are evident, MA sound is unique.

They're great. Heather is the best singer I've ever heard.
I don't understand the comparison with Floyd, they're totally different. While Mr. Waters can't write about anything else than how bad the world is, Mostly autumn gives us a spell of positivity.

I was listening to them last night, I was enjoying it but I couldn`t stop thinking to myself that something was wrong with their sound , I realised that its their drummer they need more a musical type drummer who can play tuned percusion and excite the music with some differant time signatures. To be honest their drummer is their downfall in my mind Embarrassed

If you think they're boring, go to their section, find the downloads and hit Heroes Never Die. If that doesn't move you, call the undertaker, because you're already dead. Unforgettable, exquisitely beautiful (even if Bryan Josh isn't the best singer on the planet).

Personally, I don't think they're ANYTHING like Floyd, though Wright and Gilmour are huge fans.

Gilmour too? Only knew about Wright...
BTW, Masque, what did you hear? They've had, I believe, three different drummers so far. Blackmore was probably the least bad of the three...
