they easily dissapointed you?they were barely one of the best performance you've seen...glittering 5 star prog-attempt of evolving neo-music???narrate those unique or blasting moments you've assisted to!!!i've recently been to jon anderson's performance in bucharest, and honestly, changed my perception about music...:)

The only prog act i've witnessed in person was IQ on the Dark Matter tour last November. It was truly stunning, a brilliant show. I believe they did something like 3 encores, although the stalls where i had some cds put back for me closed during those encores, so i was quite annoyed...But i can't hold that against them.
Also saw Pineapple Thief immediately before IQ, they were good, but not what i would consider entrancing.

Let me see, two King crimson conserts on TPTB tour Bergen and Oslo. Yes conserts, magnification tour in oslo,  and their sweden rock consert in 2003. One consert with the grand mothers, Anekdoten and Circles End in Bergen 2004. Gong in Stavanger in 2001, Fish in the same city in 2002. Roger Waters, In the flesh tour 2002. Jethro Tull, sweden rock 2003, Kansas, Dream Theatre, Styx swedenrock 2005. Also conserts with other artists like Deep Purple, 3 times Nightwish, 3 times Opeth, Sigur Ros, Jaga Jazzist, Muse, Anathema. But the most insanely impressive conserts I have been to must be these two fusion related conserts, Scofield, De`onete(this MUSTbe spelled wrong) Golding, celebrating Tony Williams, and the abselutly magnificant norwegian "speed balkan boogie" band Farmers Market.

The following months Im also seeing Arena, and the Zappa plays zappa show in Oslo. I love going to conserts and getting drunk after the show. Prog on!

well I saw Ian Anderson...was Ok, funny guy

but the best prog concert I went is to a argentinian band colled Pez, which are not in this site. it was in a little theater, but that I think was part of the "magic", the sound, the guitar, the 2 keyboards (one jazzlike the other electronic)...it was absolutly mindblowing!

Maybe Im mistaken, because I did not go to that many prog concerts, but they sound or at least feel better in smaller places

Dream Theater in Summer 2000.  (They have played in Hungary four times so far, but for me once was enough, I'm not a huge fanboy)

Psychotic Waltz in '97. That was incredible! This was their last tour and the first which reached my country. 2 and a half hour full of magic, and played a surprising coversong from Rainbow: Stargazer! I also have a bootleg video from the whole gig, unfortunately the quality is not so good and it is still on VHS.

Rush - I had to go to Prague for the Canadian Gods

Voivod - in '99, they opened for Neurosis (the first two opening act were Gallopping Coroners (VHK) and Today Is The Day (with Brann Dailor on the drums who is now in Mastodon), so the set was short, no more than 45-50 mins.

Ooops, I forgot to mention Fates Warning, it was short but impressive and very enjoyable gig in February this year.

Jaga Jazzist was realy awsome, i can imagine its the closest thing to wath soft machine was around 3rd you can possably eksperience live today. As for the Grand Mothers, I love the music of Zappa, hearing it live makes me apreciate it even more. And at that consert I got the oppertunety to meet Napoleon Murphy Brock.

I forgot to mention that Ive also seen Trettioåriga Kriget, Ritual and two times Hawkwind

I haven't been to many prog concerts but I've seen:
Pink Floyd in '94 - an amazing show.
Hawkwind in '95 - didn't really like the venues, and I found the audience at the Toronto show to be quite boring, except for a few.
Jethro Tull in 2000 - a nice intimate show.

I saw Opeth and Porcupine Tree in 2003 when Damnation first came out.
the live energy for the Damnation material made hearing the whole album
performed (+ face of melinda, To Bid You Farewell and a Deep Purple
cover) worthwhile. And Porcupine Tree sounds way, way better live than in
studio, IMO.

so far, good luck.

Yes during their symphonic tour at Hammersmith Appollo (not sure of the date). They were on stage for nearly 3 hours without a break.Great concert..easily the best I've been to (and also the most expensive at £40 a ticket!)

IQ on their Subterannea tour at The Astoria was also memorable.Great encore of The Last Human Gateway

I don't get to go to gigs that often for a variety of reasons, but when I heard that Hatfield and the North had reformed... well, it was an opportunity that I just couldn't resist. And was it a good show? By buggery it was!! I can't wait for the new album.

My First was In Cahoots with Phil Miller and Pip Pyle (National Health Hatfield and the North) in 92. I was so inside the Canterbury rock that I couldn't miss to meet them.

Then Gong few month later, with David Allen, Didier Malherbe and Pip Pyle again.

Following the Caravan of dreams with Richard and David Sinclair.

I think it was the same year when I saw the reunion of Emerson Lake and Palmer.

Than a long break until I saw King Crimson the double trio 1995.

Roger Waters in the flash tour 2002.

In few days I hope to see Adrian Belew...

That's it.

Hhm.... Yes 4 times, Rick Wakeman & King Crimson once each.

Suprisingly few prog acts actually - I think its because women (who I tended to go with) aren't really into prog. Mind you I have been taken along to see many other bands, some of them very embarrasing to mention. Heavens above I think I'll start another thread!

I have seen TASAVALLAN PRESIDENTTI and URIAH HEEP three times (!), ANEKDOTEN, YES, HAWKWIND, WIGWAM and DARK SUN twice, and then THE SPACIOUS MIND, UZVA, CAST, HIDRIA SPACEFOLK, ROGER WATERS, BLUESSECTION, PÄR LINDH PROJECT, OVERHEAD, AFTER CRYING, MOONFOG PROPHET, ARS NOVA, GRAND STAND and ALAMAAILMAN VASARAT once.

I'm not sure if HEEP is a prog band, but they are listed in the archives so I stated it here. All of the gigs were at Finland. Here's a couple of impressions I got out of 'em:

Well, let's see...I've seen:

Pink Floyd (twice) at the Oakland Colosseum on their Division Bell tour.  They played three nights, and I saw the first night (from directly in front of the sound board) and the last night (from the nose bleed section)

Rush (twice).  Once on the Power Windows tour (with The Fabulous Thunderbirds opening ) in the Coasta Mesa Ampitheatre (Coasta Mesa, CA), and once on the Roll The Bones tour in Frankfurt, Germany.  Primus opened for this show, and was practically booed off the stage.

Yes (twice).  Once on the (Re) Union tour in Frankfurt, Germany (no opening act), and once at Shoreline Ampitheatre (Mountain View, CA) for the Talk tour...again without an opening act.

Genesis - Once in L.A. (I think it was the Forum) on the Invisible Touch tour...always wished it was the Foxtrot Tour though

Rick & Adam Wakeman - Santa Cruz, CA (can't remember the club) and Pearl Harbour & The Explosions opened...they were actually quite good.  This would have been around 1996/97.

King Crimson - 2004 at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta on The Power To Believe tour.

Roguefest 2004 - Atlanta Shakesphere Tavern - Featured local prog bands Z-Axis, Farpoint, Cobweb Strange, Lord Only, Timothy Pure, The Bell Jar, and Man On Fire.

Roguefest 2005 - Atlanta - Featured Land Of Chocolate, The Red Masque, Izz, Farpoint, Z-Axis, Cobweb Strange, Unbounded Sky, Brass Knuckle Surfer, The Lost Boys, and Man On Fire.

Devo - Yes, Devo...quite a proggy show actually!  It was for the Peek-A-Boo tour, and I would guess around 1983/84.  The guitarist broke his ankle during the show, and got so pissed that he smashed his guitar during a rousing rendition of Hendrix's Fire.  A very good show!

I have had the pleasure of being in a band (Mind's I) in the early/mid-90s that opened for:

Kansas - I guess it would have been the Live From The Whiskey tour, at the Caberet in San Jose, CA

Brand X - I can't recall what album they were supporting, but they bored me to tears.  At the Caberet.

IQ/Enchant - This was (from what I understand) IQ's only US tour date for the Ever CD in 94 and Enchant was (if I recall) supporting an early version of Blueprint Of The World.

Vanden Plas - Ramstein, Germany in a little club called The Oasis.  They were not that impressive.  This would have been around 1990/91.

Does Steely Dan count(probably not but 2X).

Opeth 2x
Dream Theater 2x
Present
Los Jaivas
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
Dixie Dregs
Ahleuchatistas

Sigur Ros 3x
Godspeed You Black Emperor!
Dungen
Mogwai

Pere Ubu
Behold... The Arctopus
Time of Orchids

NEARfest 2000 (Thinking Plague, DFA, Anekdoten, Happy the Man, Transatlantic, Il Balletto di Bronzo, Par Lindh Project, Iluvatar, Nexus, North Star)
ProgDay 2000 (Hoyry-kone, Malibran, Tiles)

Do all the Phish shows I went to count?  Saw them about 10 times in the early nineties and then again in 2003-2004 before they "broke up" again.  All great shows.  I was at Great Woods in 93 when they did the Gamehenge cycle, wow!!  The IT Festival in 2003 was mind blowing as well.

Saw King Crimson twice, once in Hartford for the Three of a Perfect Pair show and once in Boston and Berklee Performance Center for the Construcktion of Light tour.

I've seen Peter Gabriel three times, twice on the Growing Up tour and once on the Talk to Me tour in 94.

Seen Yes three times, for the Ladder tour and then twice in 2003.

Seen the Grateful Dead about 10 times between 1983 and 1990.

Roger Waters with Eric Clapton Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking tour in 1984 I believe it was??  Hard to remember stuff back then!

I've seen lots of other shows but those are the ones that really stand out in my mind.  The Roger Waters tour for Pros and Cons was particularly interesting, with a huge video setup and some great guitar work from Clapton.  I think they also had Mel Collins on that tour with them as well.

In two weeks time I'll be able to add Oceansize to this list

(not to mention I could go to Within Temptation and Arcturus for free once, but couldn't go because of my schedule )

I'm still green of envy on those who witnessed early - and mid-Genesis  and early ELP  but in fact I may not complain because between 1977 and now I've seen many mindblowing concerts: The wall from Pink Floyd (UK and Germany), Danger money tour from UK, Spectral mornings tour from Steve Hackett, Turn of the tide tour from Barclay James Harvest, Angel station tour from Manfred Mann's Earth band, Fugazi tour from Marillion, Nude tour from Camel, Going for the one tour from Yes and the last years gigs from Anekdoten, Ange, After Crying, Ozric Tentacles, Porcupine Tree, Riverside, Moongarden, Ars Nova, Gerard and two weeks ago Echolyn . And I hope to see very soon Nemo, Maldoror, Aries, Presto Ballet, Magic Pie and Little Tragedies!!!

I have had to reach for the bunch of ticket stubs I have kept in the CTTE cover to help me out here.

Tangerine Dream, Stratosfear Tour. My first concert, and I saw them at least once following, billed as Tangerine Dream and Laserium.

Genesis, Liverpool Empire, Wind & Wuthering tour and then at Earls Court, June 1977  and Knebworth.

Peter Gabriel, at Knebworth and Liverpool Empire (Fripp played guitar but off stage)1980. Pretty sure I saw him on a later tour as well. Manchester I think. The band wore black suits and walked through the auditorium with torches at the start of the show (intruder?). Anyone help me out here?

Robert Fripp and the League of Gentlemen at the Carribean Club in Manchester

Frank Zappa at Knebworth

Jon Anderson and The New Life Band, 1980

Yes, 1980, twice,  (with the buggles duo )

Steve Hackett 1978

Rick Wakeman 1980

Camel, Rain Rances and Nude tours

Mike Oldfield May 1979 and 1980

Here & Now band

Steve Hillage 1979

Rush (I think Farewell to Kings tour)

There will be some I have missed.

I still have the ticket stubs for Hawkwind at Victoria Hall hanley May 1978. The gig was cancelled. I never did get to see them.

Big regret is not going to see Floyd on the Animals tour when I had chance.

Hello Harlequin.

Impressive, what a progrock joy  (especially Tangerine Dream and mid-Genesis)! I presume that you are aged between 45 and 50 (a few years older than me, just become 45)?

They were all good, except the drummer IMO.

This year I've been to a concert of Michael Rother (ex- neu! & Harmonia) and Dieter Moebius (Cluster, Harmonia) in a laboratory of contemporary artistic researches near to my house! It was a concert for guitar "patterns", electronic manipulations and film projection. Impressive, deeply meditative "abstract" multimedia performance!!

well, I have seen not that many.....

In the last 5 years, the best prog show was PFM's 2005 tour.

Then I enjoyed a lot:

- Marillion's Misplaced Childhood and Brave tour

- Mike Oldfield's mid 80's tour, I don't remember the album title

- Peter Gabriel's 1988 tour

- IQ

- Yes

- Supertramp in 2003

Unfortunately i did not have the chance to see Genesis with PG but just with PC, the Mama tour, uhmmm, so and so....but I enjoyed a lot The Musical Box in The lamb and Selling England tour: they are really great!

- Roger Waters's In the Flesh tour

Then I have been to many other concerts, but they are not really related to progressive area: deep purple, Uriah Heep, Mc Laughlin/DeLucia/DiMeola, etc etc

I feel like such a loser. For a long-time prog fan, this is all I've seen:

Yes - Drama tour (San Antonio, TX) , 90125 tour (Providence, RI), Masterworks tour (Jones Beach, NY)
King Crimson - Discpline tour (Austin, TX)
Rush - A Farewell To Kings tour (San Antonio)

That's really sad.

There are some impressive gig lists in this thread. After 33 years of watching prog bands I've got a big list too but  if I had to choose the hi-lights they would be:

ELP on the Trilogy tour because of the energy in the playing and the (for its time) really WIERD monster Moog improvisations - check out ELP boots for 72 tour.

Though the 'Selling England' and 'Lamb' tours were absolutely fantastic my favourite Genesis gigs would be the few nights they did at 'Drury Lane' at the end of 73. Not only did they replay the 'Selling England' set but added some old favourites (e.g. Harold TB, Fountain etc) and also because this was when Gabriel underwent his suprise elevation (on wires and in silver suit) during 'As Sure as eggs' - magic.

Because Yes didn't do a CTTE tour in Britain, we had to wait for the combined Topographic/CTTE tour in 73 - around 3 hours of prog bliss with some scortching work from Wakeman at his best. I loved this one.

Refugee in 74 was a fabulous gig with only ~200 people in the audience. Moraz played with amazing speed and precision and the improvisation was excellent. I got the chance to jam on piano with him after the gig, though he slightly outclassed my efforts!

More recently

During 1995 Arthur Brown did a comeback '50th Birthday Tour' which i was lucky enough to catch at a small gig (around 150 people). It only cost around 3 dollars entrance and the standard of musicianship from the band was astounding. My brother and myself were co-opted into chanting on stage during one number. This was probably my favourite gig of the last decade (during which I've seen F Kings, P. Tree, Spocks, Yes, ELP, Hacket and many others).

Finally I've caught a couple of intimate low key Keith Emerson performances during the last few years. The 100 Club gig in 2002 had an audience of around 150 and was the first public reformation of 'The Nice' in 32 years. Watching 'Rondo', 'America' etc from six feet away was a real buzz. KE was relaxed and very chatty - a great night. I posted details of the Emerson Chiddingly gig in August this year in the gig reviews in case anyone is interested.
