Out of the three full length songs on Pink Floyd's Animals (Dogs, Pigs, or Sheep), which is your favorite? As much as I like Dogs and Sheep, Pigs(Three Different Ones) is my favorite, Pigs on the Wings is great too.

Dogs ... this haunting part ... pushes it above Pigs for me ...

And you believe at heart, everyone's a killer.
Who was born in a house full of pain
Who was trained not to spit in the fan
Who was told what to do by the man
Who was broken by trained personnel
Who was fitted with collar and chain
Who was given a pat on the back
Who was breaking away from the pack
Who was only a stranger at home
Who was ground down in the end
Who was found dead on the phone
Who was dragged down by the stone.

Hard to say...

Dogs is so structured and melodic...
Pigs guitar pig effect are incredible
Sheep -> Keyboard is amazing , this song is kind of violent :O

And don't really have any favourite, these 3 songs are so terrific.

I agree completely!
Plus the lyrics to Dogs are absolutely outstanding, and they stick to your mind the first time you hear it!

Musically, however, my favourite is Sheep...that haunting bass line, that wonderful keyboard and the variety of styles...(the beggining sets a different mood from the verse section, and they both differ from the rocking finale)

They are all great songs, but Sheep for me..the way the track starts with Rick Wright softly lulling you into a false sense of security..then Water's rumbling bass suggesting menace..great! And Gilmour's final riff seeing out the track is the business.

"Sheep", although "Pigs" is excellent too. "Dogs" I find very boring - is has
that relaxed, lazy quality that typified so much of Floyd's music and
prevents them from ever being a favourite band with me.

dave's guitar solo on this song brings tears to my eyes one of his best solo ever. too bad he does not like much this album. and it very hard to have a good copy of this song played live by Mr. Gilmour

I love this album it my all time Pink FLoyd fav. scene i was 15 years old!!!

even better question,

Which one do you think represents prog rock the best?

I say Dogs, for it's leangth, musicainship, lyrics, unpredictability, feeling, and perfect synthesizer use.

Posted By: Fritha
Date Posted: September 09 2005 at 17:24

I find Pigs (three different ones) the most engaging, not least due to the vocal delivery by Mr. Waters. I particularly love the rhythm of his singing, a wonderful example on how the lyrics are able to gain an extra edge via the music.

As for Dogs, the long instrumental break tends to drag a bit for me and I'm not quite as attached to *that* solo as many people seem to be. Nevertheless, a great track for the most part and yes, the lyrics are once again masterful.

Sheep took the longest to grow on me but now I think of it as my second favourite track on Animals. The intensity of the music is palpable but in a fairly non-direct, understated way. Very inventive sound-scapes, too, and they work as an integral part of the composition. Gilmour shines but then he shines a lot on this album...

God, stop asking questions like that, it's impossible to answer them.

My three favorite Floyd songs, anyway. And some of the favorites in general.

I'd have to say Dogs. The whole album is really Pink Floyd at its peak. Waters has, by this point, taken over the overall message of these songs and most of the control. He does vocally work very well on both sheep and pigs. But it has to be gilmour that steals it for me on Dogs, both with guitar and vocals. The whole song is just perfect and the lyrics are beyond amazing. The chord sequence written by gilmour was supposedly so that he could play almost any note in the solo. Whatever he does, it works, BIG TIME!
Anyway, dogs is my favourite, followed very closely by sheep.

Very good question !

I guess the answer depends on subjective matters.

My subjective opinion is that the album is all great. The music is well fitted to the lyrics. The idea of describing persons as one of 3 kinds, each kind gets a different animal (and pigs gets 3 different ones) is truely amazing. One of my favorite albums of all time and for many years now.

After saying all that, my choice is dogs. maybe the great lyrics ever.

Dogs!

I love the acoustic guitar on this song and also the ambient-like section in the middle of it. Don't get me started on the solos! And the lyrics are some of the best I've ever heard, as well.

Pigs (Three Different Ones) is also great, but I'm not fond of the instrumental part on it.

Now, Sheep has got to be on second place for me... with that cool & jazzy keyboard intro, Roger's vocals fading out and mixing with the synths, and who can forget that powerful ending with Dave's guitar, playing those descending chords madly.  However... the bridge, doesn't work out for me. That's why, IMO, only Dogs is completely flawless.

My opinion on the best song on Animals has always changed a
lot. At some point, I have thought each of the 3 the best. First, it
was Dogs, and Dogs is more often my favorite than the other
two. Pigs and Sheep, however have friggin awesome endings.
I have to sayDOGS though, because
of the darkness and tranciness of the whole song. Love the
chord progression at 5 minutes, and then where it busts out
with the drums and Gilmour soloing. for Pigs, LOVE the return
to the verse at 8:09 with "Hey you Whitehouse, HA HA,
charade you are", the chord change at 8:13 is super phat.
Like the lilting feel to Sheep.

Also, I always like to encapsulate my trippy Floyd mixes with
"Pigs On the Wing" (songs like "Echoes", "Atom Heart Mother"
and "A Saucerfull of Secrets" and "Careful with that Axe,
Eugene" (both the live Ummagumma versions)
