I thought we already had a conversation thread on Russian prog, but I couldn't find it.

Russia has such a grand history of music that I would think they had a lot of progressive musicians & bands!  However, Igor Khoroshev of Yes is the only one who comes to mind.

I found this one on a Facebook Jazz-Rock fusion page....I find this performance to be exhilarating, particularly since I love the music of my hometown band "Chicago!"

Please feel free to comment on this group and Russian prog in general!

To be honest the only Russian lp I know and have in my collection is 'Equinox' by Aquarium (Аква́риум; often stylized as Åквариум). Perhaps not 'prog' but a very diverse and eclectic sounding band who (from what little I know) were a very long lived and influential band. Apparently they played the Royal Albert Hall in 2008! In many ways its mix of Folky influences mixed with new wave and psychedelic sounds reminds me very much of Super Furry Animals 'Mwng' lp

Well, there's Vespero, the kings of modern space rock, who are from Astrakhan. And a number of other good contemporary bands on the RAIG label.

I'm quite fond of the sole album by Sepsis, A Liturgy of Madness.  Sort of like The Magic Band trying to improvise a Yes album after doing too many mushrooms.

Then there's Horizont who put out two albums in the eighties. Sounded a bit like a cross between Yes and OMD as far as I can remember.

a) please post YouTube etc. links to bands you like from Russia

b) check out the Leonid & Friends video I posted.   Those guys play the material PERFECTLY!

I've been writing to the band & will see if they have any original material to send.  Leonid is the bassist & band leader.

Well I'm sure that the whole Soviet Union thing put a bit of a damper on Russian prog bands up until relatively recently. But fortunately it seems that Russia (as with the rest of Eastern Europe) has been having something of a renaissance in new progressive talent popping up within the past decade. As far as Russian bands go, I think the most famous would be crossover band iamthemorning, who I've never actually listened to but I know have quite a handful of well acclaimed albums here on PA.

Some other bands from Russia that I quite like include:

http://kavlaspanda.bandcamp.com/" rel="nofollow - Kaula Spanda (Psychedelic)
http://pandorasnail.bandcamp.com/album/war-and-peace" rel="nofollow - Pandora Snail (Eclectic Prog)
http://rozvitalis.bandcamp.com/" rel="nofollow - Roz Vitalis (Listed under RIO/Avant-Prog, but they've ventured into a whole bunch of prog styles over the past 15+ years)
http://whalephant.bandcamp.com/album/kamma" rel="nofollow - Whalephant (Eclectic Prog)

All of these bands have quite a rich palette of sounds and have put out some very emotional music. Definitely recommended!

Not Russian, but one Ukrainian band that a friend of mine likes is Karfagen. They recently released a new album to high acclaim. Personally, not as big a fan, but you will probably like it.

Well I'm sure that the whole Soviet Union thing put a bit of a damper on Russian prog bands up until relatively recently.

I'm curious about that!  I was in Romania in 1979, when it was firmly Communist under the rule of Nicolae Ceaucescu (alarming with all the armed police).  I was in a tour bus, and I heard "Awaken" by Yes on the radio!!

I was also in Communist Czechoslovakia in the 1980s, when Gorbachev was instituting "Glasnost" in the USSR...I saw much graffiti for bands like Metallica and Judas Priest, and thought to myself "...hmmm, I wonder how long Communism can last?"  Answer was not long!

No doubt, the Iron Curtain prevented high-quality musical instruments from reaching the hands of willing musicians, but I think that some interesting music was crafted, not unlike music during the post WWII Kraut Rock movement.  I bet there are some real gems to be found!

Russia actually is responsble for making one of the rare modern progressive albums - like in genuinely progressive. Check out The Gourishankar's 2nd Hands for proof...but whatever you do don't pick their newest album.

I'd lve to sprinkle this thread with a few vids here and there, but I can't be bothered with the amount of katja I'm getting today

Yes, that Gourishankar album is good as is the Pandora Snail one.
I had high hopes for Karfagen after their first CD but the second one turned into lift music and I haven't listened to them since, maybe I should?

They can really play I'll give you that. Tight and energetic....and maybe it's because I am not that familiar with Chicago, but to me the music sounds like the stuff Paul Schaeffer did for Dave Letterman on the late show

It is such a wonderful album and one that reignited my love for experimental music. Really interesting modern prog that goes from hard hitting almost Opeth-like riffs to wafting delightful salsa....but hen again it also does these beautiful longstretched soundscapes with flickering electronics and something akin to those monumental kathartic rock swoops you get from really wellcrafted post rock.
How can it have been so long since I last span this baby? Sorry I'm just babbling to myself here

Karfagen? Sure. The most recent one Cosmology is one of the best symph things I've heard all year. Great usage of mellotron and flute within a healthy dosage of blistering prague rock. Hold on...yeah I always mix up these two critters. I am of course thinking of Spanish Kotebel. Heh sorry bout that. Nahh Karfagen is that band Michael just reviewed very favourably, and just by reading through it, knowing your tastes, I'd most definitely go for it

Nice keyboard work by Igor Khoroshev!  I would have gone to see their show in Chicago, but I was flying out of town to be married in the US Virgin Islands!!  A good tradeoff, as my bride and I eventually made it backstage to Yes in 2004 & met Rick, Jon, Steve, Alan and Chris!!  RIP Chris Squire!

Quite a bizarre story about an unfortunate Russian guitarist....have any of you heard of him?
http://ajournalofmusicalthings.com/bad-smelling-airline-passenger-was-rotting-russian-rocker-hes-now-dead/" rel="nofollow -
http://ajournalofmusicalthings.com/bad-smelling-airline-passenger-was-rotting-russian-rocker-hes-now-dead/" rel="nofollow - http://ajournalofmusicalthings.com/bad-smelling-airline-passenger-was-rotting-russian-rocker-hes-now-dead/

Andrey Suchilin was revered in Russia. Not only was he known one of the country’s best guitarist, he was also considered a rock pioneer in the bad old days of the Soviet Union.

He was recently on a flight from the Canary Islands en route to Amsterdam on a Transavia flight–and he wasn’t well.

Suchilin smelled so bad, that other passengers began fainting and vomiting. The stench from his body was so intense flight attendants first tried to isolate him by putting him one of the lavatories. When that didn’t help, the captain made the decision to divert to Faro, Portugal.

He was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed as suffering from tissue necrosis–the dreaded flesh-eating disease. He was literally rotting, which is why he was so rank.

(interesting video of Suchilin playing, I can hear Fripp & Terje Rypdal influences)

Review quote (Google translate): By the way, the musicians among their main musical reference points are called Meshuggah, Dream Theater and Atheist, and the first thing you pay attention to when you start listening to the material is the technical roar of the bass that has been brought to the fore, which is followed by "pulling" bubbling drums, filigree guitar attacks and raucous vocals in the spirit of the End Zone, which as from a catapult blur into the face of the listener these three talented old-schoolers. Strictly speaking, there are only elements from thrash, but there is no death at all, although I still perceive such music more like thrash and associations, because of "Water" they do not arise with Atheist and certainly not with Dream Theater

There's one of the greatest things the USSR did. The pre-1917 Russian state had around 75% of peasantry. The Soviet power took all those uneducated illiterate people and de facto made them the nobility, 'cause, for example, neither Tolstoy nor Dostoyevsky intended their literary works to be read for peasants or lower classes. Here, at the Soviet schools, former peasants, current peasants, children of the peasants studied War And Piece with all those pages in French translated below on the page. The former noblemen had en masse proved their arrogance, ignorance and other bad features - so, God (or, if you like, fate) swapped the ruling classes a bit. Those who had been previously nothing, became... well, not everything, not quite the ruling class, but the middle class indeed. Engineer was the most popular and widespread and common Soviet profession. Most of them certainly came to the cities from the villages and towns.

I tend to go off-topic, I agree.
Anyway, there was a 1987 pop song called "I see my village in my dreams". Or so, I'm not a professional interpreter, after all.  HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of Soviet citizens saw themselves in this song:

ELP with metal guitar and sax. Check out Cross or At Nights for some over-the-top psycho Prog.

They also released one of the best Christmas albums ever: The Magic Shop.

Also into iamthemorning, Pandora Snail and Vespero. Russian musicians are top notch.

ah second album by Horizont is like symphonic music - but played on these strange synthesizers, very unique with some dramatic story to imagine. Sepsis had nice jamming psych style with loud bass a la Yes.

From symphonic/electronic oddballs I like:
Boris Petrov - Memory 1986

and let's not forget about Russian King Crimson Wink

Same here, but it looks too much like his usual behaviour.

I never said Svetonio didn't have interesting musical propositions either (he often did), but it's the way he perceives genres (plus some highly offensive racist posts) that got him banned.

The last thing I want in my life is to cause a conflict, anywhere.

However, I think that if there was a guy that was FAMOUSLY banned for one reason or another, it would be nice if he and his activities that made him banned were carved in stone somewhere at the gates of Prog Archives.

For I was confused a bit yesterday. I looked in Wikipedia, read the bio, returned to the forum, didn't understand why I had had to be literal to be perceived normally at this site. Now I see, that was another Svetonio, not from the ancient times. OK.

I promise to improve my behaviour. I am so sorry.

Yup, we should maybe apologize to you if you're not him. Wink

It had become to a point that it was a game between us as to whom would spot him first.

Ian & I have to look out for him both here and at another forum, where he keeps returning after getting life ban on there too.
I think next time he'll pop up here or there, he will be signalling himself as from either Nauru, Mauritania or South Sudan. LOL

There's really no problem. I think I wanted to be extra broad on the topic, ranging from the very beginning of the proto-proto-prog to the avant-garde of Zvuki Mu. I was too broad, I must say. And it's really nice that somebody can tell me to calm down. I mean, really nice! Smile

There was so much prog-tinged folk in the USSR, there naturally a question appears whether a certain band has enough depth of its shade of progressiveness. I also understand the lyrics and its dear to me and I thus think it's all too prog. Like, I used to listen to Queen's ANATO for years without knowing the lyrics. It was just additional sounds to me. Without lyrics the songs lose per cents of their charm - at least, in case of Queen.

Life is too complex. No problem in minor problems. At least, I have read the biography of Gaius Suetonius Tranquilllus.
