Subject: Explain Your Avatar

There are a lot of interesting images under peoples names on this page. Many of them seen straight forward , a favorite album or artist, some are more obscure . For me it's an image from the inside of a Yes album I remember from my youth. Long before I knew anything about prog rock I use to flip through my brothers album collections and look at the artwork. The image I use is something I stumbled upon on the internet , something I hadn't seen in many years but I stuck in my head so I used it.
So , what's the story behind your avatar or other images or phrases you incorporate in to your posts?

Mine was a doodle that I did in college while I was smokin' weed and chillin' to some prog. I kept drawing, erasing, re-drawing, and re-connecting these interwoven pathways with the intent of having a single, Moebius-like structure. But having finished it, I realized it was actually two pathways knotted together. I later entitled it "Knot Right". The play on words seemed fitting. The colored background was added when I started using it as an avatar, because B/W didn't stand out enough.

Friede and I use the same avatar, the cover of the first album of our band Bald Angels, "The Goat and the Donkey". it was produced in a limited edition of 500 copies only which we sold at our restaurant. the cover shows the two of us depicted by a befriended artist with Friede on the left and me on the right.
the cover of our second album "It's a Dog's Life", also in a limited edition of 500 copies, is extremely daring, so we chose not to use that one

My Avatar is 'the long man of Wilmington', possibly/ probably a Neolithic (though this is still disputed)chalk-hill figure cut into the Windover hillside near Willmington in East Sussex. There are numerous other ancient Chalk hill figures including the White Horse of Uffington in Oxfordshire (Depicted on the front cover of XTC's fantastic 'English settlement' lp) and my actual first choice for an avatar, The Cerne Abbas giant in Dorset (more my neck of the woods) but I think that it would be censored due to its.. er.. 'rampant' depiction of an erect phallus.. I might give it a go and see what happens...

I'm rockin' Monotonprodukt 07, a vital ur-text of electronic music with a killer and eclectic tracklist, one of the best albums of the '80s and probably the single best album ever to come out of Austria. Pro-tip: the tracklist works still better when played back-to-front.

Mine is the cover art from the Flying Luttenbachers album Cataclysm. I believe it depicts a planetoidal entity known as The Iridescent Behemoth, whose apocalyptic battle with another cosmic being The Void is musically represented therein. This is part of a multi-album conceptual sequence dealing with the total destruction of Earth and its aftermath. An easy-listening classic which you should definitely buy for your granny this Christmas, especially if she's deaf.

It's been fun reading through people's responses here so far. Mine isn't too significant, just a detail from the cover of Herbie Hancock's Sextant that's centered in on a happy, carefree guy dancing his heart out in some sort of cosmic psychedelic vista, which I see as being not completely unlike me in real life.
All of my past avatars on the site have also been album covers or cropped sections of album covers, usually with some sort of face in the forefront so as to be a bit more avatar-y. For the most part, they haven't had any real significance other than being favourites of mine for their vivid colour schemes (with a couple of notably uncolourful ones thrown in the mix). Anyone who's interested can look through them here; this is another fun thread in itself that I'd recommend for people to read through:

This of course is the wizard from King Crimson's In the Wake of Poseidon. It's one of The 12 Archetypes or The 12 Faces of Humankind, painted by Tammo De Jongh. The 12 faces were painted individually, but apparently Tammo was asked to splice them together for the album cover, painting in transitions from one to the next, creating a very prog-like composition from several smaller compositions. You can see the boundaries of each painting despite the attempt to conceal them.
I think it's unfortunate, because each of the individual portraits is fantastic, but when they all got stuck together, each with equal importance, it became a rather bland composition.
My favorite has always been this - The Logician (Air and Fire). I think this should have been the cover, with The Enchantress (Water and Earth) on the back, but that would have broken up the set of 12 and wouldn't be right either.

No, she knows well enough that I am too clumsy to build my own lodge . Moreover, unlike my grandma back in the day, I don't have long front teeth in my upper dentures. So I will not chew down the only tree in my backyard: a magnolia tree which I planted some 18 or 19 years ago.

My Les Paul was stolen early last summer, though, along with some high dollar guitar synths and effects devices. I've replaced many of the effects and synths, but I will be getting by for awhile with half way decent but cheap guitars. I'd like to get a Les Paul Classic Custom one day, but my next guitar will probably be a Gibson SG whenever I can swing the cash or credit. I haven't updated my avatar yet. I'm in no hurry, I suppose

Motorpsycho, Møster! and Reflections in Cosmo guitarist Hans Magnus "Snah" Ryan. The photo is slightly edited, and chosen for its colours matching the first photo in my sig.

It's Ian Anderson from the Too Old To Rock 'n Roll music video... right after he stares up a woman's skirt with binoculars. Just too ridiculous to pass up.
I thought that was Ian. Either that or a crazy pirate!

My original avatar is this one
which I chose because my avatar name is a song on an album with this cover.
My current avatar is a protest against the discrimination of robots on this site!
It shows Robbie, an intelligent robot and main character of the popular German children's book 'Robbi, Tobbi und das Fliewatüüt' by Boy Lornsen. The picture is taken from the film adaption in 1972.

A band web site is currently under construction. I can't tell when it will go up, but I hope we can get to that within a few weeks.

I've had a few avatars during my 12½-year stay in PA. Once it was the CAMEL cover A Nod and a Wink, and when I lost it (there was some technical updating, I guess) I chose a picture from the list in the Control Panel. The shape of a white, much stylished horse against the black background was probably my longest-running avatar.
I just decided to change it at last. This is the cover of my second prog book, dealing with all-time Finnish prog.
I designed it myself, using some album covers for the letters.
EDIT: I changed my avatar (in April or May 2018, don't remember exactly) from the Prog Finlandia cover to Pieter Brueghel's Hunters in the Snow, one of my favourite paintings.

I understand your frustration, but just use something that fits their size, just don't use big size pics. I've never had problems adding avatars on PA.

you can easily downsize any picture with a photo editor or paint program; Friede and I use Ultimate Paint for this purpose. a free version of the program is available online

To which fall festival do you refer? What do you do during the proceedings/ceremony/ritual?
we are High Priestesses of Gaia, the ancient Greek Goddess of the Earth. the solstices and equinoxes, which mark the beginning of the four seasons, are our holy days. we paint ourselves head to toe in the color of the beginning season - green for the grass of spring, red for the flowers of summer, yellowish-brown for the leaves of fall and white for the snow of winter. we dance and sing hymns of praise to Gaia, bring offerings of flowers and fruits of the season (nuts for winter) and take fly agaric to have visions.
we also developed a calendar of our own. it has 13 months with 28 days each + a New Year's Day that does not belong to any month or week. in leap years New Year's Day is followed by leap day which also does not belong to any month or week. since the weekdays of this calendar are not identical with the weekdays of the Gregorian calendar we named the weekday after the 7 Pleiades. the months are named after Greek Goddesses.
this calendar has the advantage that the same date will fall on the same weekday every year. what's more, every month starts with the same weekday, so calculating which weekday a certain date falls on is totally easy
