Hi,
Goodness ... he just turned 67! Born in 1950 per Wiki.
Saw him in Portland a few years back, with a band of youngsters that were OK, and fine, however, my thoughts were that when it came to "improvising" and "free form" these folks lacked a lot of learning, as they could only come back to a riff, or a sound/emotion done by Damo, and in the end, while it was good, it really was second to the originals and then some, and when you left, you really wanted to say ... they need a little more and either some direction, or a complete loss of direction in order to get something done.
It was nice, however, to get a CAN feel, when they did things like "Mushroom" and a couple of other bits and pieces, but they were not CAN in any shape or form, which was to be expected, though, as I mentioned, I think the band lacked in the free form and improvisational status of things, and that made it seem like Damo was just repeating himself ...
it was, however, an interesting show, since folks in Portland are not used to seeing things like that at all, and it was different ... even if not so, for me!
I would love to see him mixed up with someone of the Djam Karet kind of work, who are specially good at improvisations and letting go, and an unusual band for most listeners, since they are more into the quality and continuation of that "sound" and "feeling" than they are into a "song" format, and as Gayle has stated, they might start on A, and end up on Z ... or who knows where ... and I think that Damo needs more of this, to help him do more than what he does.
Will be glad to hear this as soon as I can find it ... generally all the folks coming out of Cleopatra sound the same and sometimes very repetitive, but we will see.
