I like when, as HAL is being gradually disabled, he first questions and commands, then starts to plead, then his voice slows down and he starts singing "Daisy" as he loses intelligence, sentience, and "life."

Ha! The unpredictable, non-linear human wins... for now!

I like the 'Daisy' bit too! End of Close Encounters as well, perhaps?

On a lighter note - what about the scene in Dark Star, when the crew are trying to get the bomb back into the bay using logic? Hilarious! The surfing finale gets me every time too.

If it's TV sci-Fi, then most episodes of Red Dwarf would be up there, or even the radio/TV adaptation of Hitchiker's Guide.

"They wanted - us"!

Like Jean I will not tell which movie that line is from. Perhaps we can generally make a guessing game out of this thread.

I will give one hint though: The director only ever made one full length movie, but he is nevertheless a well-known figure in the movie world apart from this movie.

From Aliens: after the rescue craft has crashed and there's no way off the alien infested planet, Newt (the little girl) says:

"We'd better get back 'cause it'll get dark soon, and they mostly come at night.  Mostly." Evil Smile

^ the Alien series gets most of my votes too --

We have "Here kitty, kitty ..."  as the late John Hurt hopelessly makes his way through the Nostromo bowels.

There's "How could they cut the power, man, they're animals?!"  from the also deceased Bill Paxton.

And of course the 'salad scene' which changed sci-fi/horror forever.

"Also extraordinary things. Revel in your time."

"Nothing the god of biomechanics wouldn't let you in heaven for?"

There are, of course, a hundred other great lines from that movie.

The ending scene of The Planet of the Apes (the 1968 film) where George Taylor (played by Charlton Heston) discovers the remains of the Statue of Liberty.

I thought that was Moses after crossing the Red Sea... or was it an NRA ad, after Obama won the presidency?

As with Tom Cruise, I find it hard to separate the man/arsehole from the role.

^Yeah, Charlton was a mixed bag. He did Planet of the Apes and The Omega Man, but also hosted "The Mysterious Origins of Man" which was filled with crackpot pseudoscience and creationism. Wacko

But yeah, that's a memorable movie moment, for sure.

How about this funny (if misogynist and grisly) last line from post-apocalyptic cult classic A Boy and His Dog (spoken by the dog, Blood, as the boy muses on his dead love Quilla:

"Well I'd say she certainly had marvelous judgement, Albert, if not particularly good taste."

Easy

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe: Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of  Orion, I've watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tanhäusser Gate. All those ... moments will be lost in time, like tears...in rain. Time to die.

That moment in Predestination where you discover that the man (who was previously a woman), the woman (who later becomes the man), and the child they have are all the same person.

He tasks me. He tasks me, and I shall have him. I'll chase him round the Moons of Nibia and round the Antares Maelstrom and round Perdition's flames before I give him up!  -  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khan_Noonien_Singh" rel="nofollow - Khan Noonien Singh , Star Trek II

Lord Dark Helmet: What the hell am I looking at? When does THIS happen in the move?
Col. Sandurz: NOW. You're looking at now, sir. Everything that happens now is happening now.
Lord Dark Helmet: Go back to then!
Col. Sandurz: What?
Lord Dark Helmet: THEN!
Col. Sandurz: I can't!
Lord Dark Helmet: Why not?
Col. Sandurz: We passed it!
Lord Dark Helmet: When?
Col. Sandurz: Just now!
Lord Dark Helmet: When will then be now?
Col. Sandurz: SOON!

And then any number of bits from the original Star Trek TV show.

A bit left-field, but if 'time travel' counts as sci-fi - then I'll mention 'Somewhere in Time' - a bit of a cheesy 80s romance with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. Basically he wills himself to travel back to 1912 to meet a woman in a photograph who he knows he was destined to meet. However, the scene that sticks is when he sees a 1979 coin he has and the spell breaks as he realises this time travel status is not real. Unable to get back in time again, he dies of a broken heart to the strains of Rachmaninov's Variations of a Theme by Paganini. Quite memorable - have to say it would make a great prog rock concept album! .

Or, from another great 50s sci-fi film, the little girl who screams: "THEM!"

Since no-one seems to know which movie my line ("They wanted - us"!) is from I will tell: It is from the movie "Phase IV" by Saul Bass. It is a movie about intelligent (but normal-sized) ants.

He also was a member of the gun lobby. As to great SF-movies he starred in I'd like to add "Soylent Green".
