Ok recently i played some friends close to the edge, just the song, as i have just got into Yes and wanted to share it with everyone. I said "Listen to this, it'll blow your mind!" After about 15 minutes it was turned off after much protest by myself and replaced by some crap dance music (this is in our 6th form common room, where there is a CD player, and you are supposed to leave a song alone and wait your turn.)
I therefore asked people what they thought and many people said it was "crap" and that it "sounded like it was a random keyboard song made by a bunch of idiots." (Upon which i slapped them round the face and went off in huff  only kdding) I Simply said, if this is true how can they play it live?

Anyhoo, this is an example of how todays music is seriously dumbing people down. The popular stuff, in England any way, i guess is pop and indie! INDIE?! You may ask "Well what is wrong with that type of music?" Well i shall tell you, i think it offends me! To think these people get payed to play this crap music! If you've ever heard the "Kaiser Chiefs" you'll know what i mean, the chours of a song is to repeat the line "I Predict a riot. I predict a riot!" Over and over and over and over...

This is the same in many bands, tunless songs being made like B-movies to get in people's heads so they invest money in it. I will respect other people's taste in music only for so long and now i'm at a boiling point about it. There is nothing new and original in music today and i fear that this trend may continue.

Which is why "older" music such as Prog, Rock and to an extent Blues is now being looked into by younger people as they are bored of new music, I certainly was which is why i got into the music i like such as Prog. I think soon the record companies may experiance a backlash and these bands will become unemployed very quickly. I just pray for the day.

Ok rant over, just needed to vent that. If anyone would care to correct me, or express their oppnions go right ahead.

There will always be people who don't appreciate prog and prefer bands like The Kaiser Chiefs, but that's all down to individual taste. I find it a shame that there are very few bands around with the kind of musicianship that bands such as Yes, Genesis and ELP have/had. The ones that do (e.g. IQ, Pendragon) are not very well known and don't get much airplay. It would be nice if they were more popular so that they didn't have to struggle to survive.

"Indie" rock is one genre I can't stand. Canada is full of it.

The Killers is a good band, really. Most of the rest of mainstream rock is sh*t.

Still, YES is a crap band. I prefer dance music to it, especially the one made by hot chicks! Be a man, dude, you MUST prefer Britney Spears to Jon Anderson.

The next time you wanna blow your friend's mind, play 'em some Kyuss.

Man, im sorry but theres a difference between listening to spears and watching her... Mr Anderson may not be as fun to watch naked, but hes sure a better musician!

Worse part is, as a student at (the same) sixth form i can honestly say that my beloved Floyd gets turned off as often as his Yes! theyre philistines! and the killers are by no stretch of the imagination 'good'! Prog will strike down its enemies!

Solution- get yourself an mp3 player and a good set of earphones- the kind that remove external noise such as the shure on stage earphones - and listen to what you like.

Hows that, two guys from the same sixth form!

Hell, when I was in the sixth form back in ole 78 youngster, it was no different! Popular music mostly ruled the Stereo! Nothings changed it seems.

I predict a riot coincidently sounds very much like a punk song from that period, also difficult to play if girls were around!

Kyuss? For the most part its just above average metal, theres some exceptions however (I really like Space Cadet and Demon Cleaner off of Welcome to SKy Valley)

Id take close to the edge over all their material! but thats onlt me

(maybe this outburst is just becuase i prefer QOTSA to Kyuss)

I agree in a way. When pop and current rock music is made in a classy and...well...talented way, it's a good thing. However, there is so much crappy music out there right now that when a talented artist comes along, they're completely forgotten and disregarded in place of the untalented artist. Popular music revolves more around what's current and trendy now, basically what sells to the young public, and less about the talent behind the artists.

One example is The Flower Kings(bad example if you don't like them, though.) They put out a new fantastic release every year with excellent material and playing. Compare that to all the current popular artists who take 4 years to put out a cd with a few good tracks and mostly containing rubbish. No wonder the recording industry is screaming bloody murder when kids download songs off the internet to get the few good songs.

I think you're right. The problem is that the common denominator is so
low that any indie or rock bands even marginally above average are feted
as gods. To read many music critics, you would think that, say, FRANZ
FERDINAND are one of the most important things to happen to music for
many years. Certainly, they can write a catchy tune, but really... then
there's OASIS, who are essentially what I'd call a pub band (if my local
boozer put on a rock night I'd expect to see plenty of similar WHO-cum-
BEATLES-cum-post punk-type guitar outfits), and they're world
superstars...

Oasis at least writes a few catchy faux-Mott the Hoople type songs. I'd
rather hear bands ripping off good 70s ideas than the worst of the 80s.

I have no idea what Franz Ferdinand (or Canada's version, the Marble
Index) are up to, or Bloc Party... are they trying to sound like Gang of
Four? Because if so, they've failed.

I agree, but she is even worse acting than singing.

At least, she is GOOD, if you follow me. Jon Anderson is boring as hell, IMO, and, dude, HE IS A MAN (well, he must be).

Kyuss is a great band, IMO, and they're shocking in the first listen for some people, if you play it LOUD. So, the perfect band to BLOW MINDS AWAY, and not a hard listen for 'normal people'. QOTSA is a good band, but personally I prefer Kyuss.

Yeah, they're not original (they sound just like a heavier punk version of Duran Duran), but an interesting band. "Mr. Brightside" and "Smile Like You Mean It" are great pop songs, with a nice melody. Well, I like their songs. If I had the chance to choose a pop mainstream band of these days to go in a tour with me, it would be 'em.

What is terrible is that the current young generation of listeners has been used to crap music. They only know that, that's why there are so few to really enjoy real music. Music industry has ruined people ears (and brain) with such genres as rap, "r'n'b" , dance, bad rock.
