SPECIAL COLLABORATION

5 stars  —   Everytime I find one of hidden/lost early 70's gems , I find myself always carried some 30 years back even if I discover them now. Of course only a small percentage of those gems turns to be diamonds , but I believe this is one of them. How is it possible that such grandiose masterpieces are still not common knowledge among progheads? Because we are dealing with one of those masterpieces of Folk Prog to be classified along with other pearls such as Comus or Algarnas Tradgard.

The music is of an incredible and highly original nature that allies high vocal prowesses ala Tim Buckley with a rather somber timber reminding you of Audience's Howard Werth (Hammill is not far away, either) and outstanding musicianship so much that both original members Noy and Bairstow play multiple instruments and apparently with great ease. The third member, drummer Conlan has his hands full accompanying his comrades and I believe he also plays congas , although this is not mentioned on the credits. The only outside help they got are additional strings for the last 12 mins of their magnum opus Sun Synfonia.

And what a masterpiece this tune turns out to be!! If the first six minutes develop a good mix of folk rock somewhere between the Comus and Jethro Tull (circa Brick album), the strings come in and the music plunges into a deep madness likely to sink you into insanity if the strings were not to bring you back to the surface for a breath of fresh air every so often. The melange between the 12 string guitar strums , superb drumming all underlined by a swirling cluster of wind instruments and the strings (it does not mention the size of the orchestra , but my guess is a quintet) is one of the most perfect blend ever achieved far from the many catastrophes of the era (I will not name the guilty groups but only Procol and Caravan fared correctly). As Travis/con safo mentions , the lyrics become intensely disturbing also , but do not reach the eerie call for murder and rape that Comus does in their song Drip Drip but they do curdle the blood . The beautyful athmosphere is completely different than Traffic's John Barleycorn Must Die masterpiece but one cannot help thinking about it as those wild and somber ambiances are driving you to the outer edges of reason. Nevertheless , the superb 12 min finale is completely spine chilling , hair raising and spine chivers and goose bumps are also on the menu as the abrupt end leaves a empty feel that can be assimilable to the last glass of wine of a 1947 Grand Cru Cos D'Estournel is emptied.

The second side pales a bit in comparison , but by no means are those two tracks anything else than gems themselves. Call Of The Wild is probably the folkiest of the three tunes, starts off with a great acoustic 12 string guitar beautifully underlined by a splendid yet serene flute. Again Comus is not far away from the mind even when the track moves through a series of wild tempo changes sometimes hinting at Indian Classical music. Yet another perfect call!

A strange siren alerts you that the third and final track (the title track depicted by the strange artwork sleeve) just got under way , and that you are not yet through with madness as comes in a psychey guitar and great saxo and insane vocals. The last part of the track is dedicated to improvisations on that theme and they come out grandiosely succesfull at it.

This is the kind of album I will personally make sure more people will know within the following months - a bit the same as I did for Comus , Circus and a few other gems. Run , walk , fly to your first vendor and order it (it is distributed by Sanctuary Record - a fitting name for such a masterpiece) , because your life cannot be complete without having heard this. A pure moment of intense orgasmic pleasure!!!!!!

I would believe you, judging on the title track that I've heard- it's a truly deranged masterpiece of a song, that bizarrely reminded me of VDGG a little...I first heard it when I was about 13 and once you've heard music like that indie rock will NEVER have the same appeal!

Both albums (Sorcerors,Rats and Mice...) by Jan Dukes de Grey are excellent.
The Fresh Maggots -s/t album is also very good as is Synesthesia - s/t (Bowie's backing band at the folk club that he used to run.It sounds uncannily like the Space Oddity album but folkier!)

Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb.

I have and it is excellent. But I have my doubts this is a valid Cd pressing (bootleg).

Funny thing is about Fresh Maggots is that both small vinyl pressings were rotten from the start, with air bubbles appearing in the constitution of the wax. So hardly anyone had a playable vinyl either.

Review by Travis.

5 stars  —  Jan Dukes De Grey are a forgotten relic of progressive music. Their brilliant free-from album "Mice And Rats In The Loft" was the pinnacle of their musical expression, a semi-improvised journey into madness. The album opens with the epic track "Sun Symphonica" which embodies everything that was excellent about this band. Starting rather lighthearted, bracing you for the sonic assault soon to be unleashed in your mind. Lots of clever instrumental work and 12 string strumming, Noy and Bairstow create a spiralling maelstrom with many different instruments including saxaphones, flutes, trumpets, trombones, even a zelda chord(!). All made with the help of a backing orchestra, which gives the music and intense and epic feel. Brilliant. A more sinister atmosphere is revealed halfway through the song, describing the beheading of a young girl, made even more intense by Derek's theatric voice. An intense intstrumental section kicks in after this, and we are taken on an incredible improvised journey. The song then reprises the beginning, but in a negative light. "Sunshine/Come Screaming Through My Window/Another Loney Day Is Through" Breathtaking.

The album never does return to the intensity of Sun Symphonica, but the last two tracks are still excellent. "Call Of The Wild" uses multi-vocal harmonies to create an eery sound, very unique. The distorted acoustic guitars give it a very dark mood and original sound. The song structure dissolves and derek takes us on a journey with his guitar alone. Improvised riffs and atmospheric strumming give the feel of being deep in a forest, surrounded by cool, misty air. Beautiful. At around the 8 minute mark the song burts into a jazzy finale, very cool and intense.

The title track "Mice And Rats In The Loft" is a psych masterpiece. Hendrix style guitar gives the song a very psychedelic feel, creating pools of sound around your feet. The lyrics are a chilling tale of religious sacrifice, all adding to the intense mood and atmosphere of the track. "The blade descended like lightning/Tore him open from chest to gut/And the priest thrust his hand inside/And ripped out the still beating heart". The song follows a similar rythym all the way through, but builds upon it with odd sounding instruments and awesome buildups.

A criminally underrated album that deserves its place in prog history. Much thanks to frenchie for for actually listening! :p

progQuebec is releasing a live album from 75 on sept 27.

It is called": live at L'Evéché. It has tracks from the first studio album but also from the other live 74/75.

I understand an archival album from Lasting Weep is also inthe works. had members from Maneige and l'Orchestre Sympathique. Speaking of which if you enjoy Maneige , ProgQuebec released l'O.S.'s debut two months ago! Much recommended!

SPECIAL COLLABORATOR (Honorary Collaborator)
4 stars   4,5 stars really!!!!

An absolutely flamboyant debut album from folk duo Jan Dukes De Grey (originally from Yorkshire) that leans heavily on the progressive side with the kind of typical madness that you might find in some Jethro Tull album or even the wild Comus. The tracks are composed on 12-string guitar and sung by Derek Noy and he is accompanied on a wide variety of wind instruments and percussions by Michael Bairstow. They are absolutely complementary and there is great deal of complicity. Noy’s voice is comparable to Van Morrison (of Astral Weeks) cross with the superb vocalizings that Tim Buckley and John Martyn have gotten us used to two years later and in the stronger and wilder moments he might even sound a bit like Audience’s Howard Werth.

The tracks are almost entirely acoustic (a few organs here and there) and have a very pastoral feel, but the lyrics are anything but bland or conventional. Although a very calm album, every ounce of lunacy of their following album is already present here and put to great use on every track on this album. 18 tracks for a total time of almost 49 minutes, this is an incredibly long record for the times, and believe me, everyone of those minutes is loaded with the interesting accounts of Mister Noy’s endeavours, in a very convincing Troubadour style. Not all that progressive per se, the album is very entertaining for all those freaks loving hippy ideals and great but troubling tales of watching the sunrise and love encounters: High Priced Rooms may mean he will die a virgin, and two minutes later he praises the courage of schoolgirls. The tracks are noticeably longer on the second side but remain under the four-minute mark except for the finale. The overall insane but tranquil feeling can also be likened to Tea And Symphony’s debut album titled Asylum For The Musically Insane.

Although quite brilliant and entertaining, the album is not flawless and can be tedious to harder music freaks, but David Hitchcock (well known to progheads) manages to pull a superb production job on a real lost gem. But this album might pale in comparison with the following (and aptly titled) Mice And Rats In The Loft, but still remains a minor gem.

I can't get "Mice and Rats In The Loft" on Amazon (within 4 to 6 weeks), any ideas where I can get it?  The same applies for anything else by Jan Dukes de Grey.  They have Sorcerors available in 24 hours, but one is in stock and it has no cover art.  It's Label is Wounded Nurse.

Hmm, I really want some of their albums badly.

You can purchase it from an eBay store seller.

I'll see what I can do, are their offical CD releases of their albums?  I don't want some dodgy Import, like I do with Keef Hartley Band.

These albums cry out for re-mastering or re-release.  I've still yet to even get Anglagard's albums either and they're first on my list, alongside Anekdoten (which I will get direct from their website soon).

I know that the Japanese import is an official remaster, but it's quite expensive. I'm not sure about the others, although I would think that they would be ok. You might want to ask Hugues or you could always get the vinyl release, although I'm sure it's difficult to find and/or exensive as well.

As for the Anglagard, the first album is really good. Have you got to hear Kaleidoscope of Rainbows yet?

Ah, that's Neil Ardley, no, but it's on my list as well.  I know that it was re-released a while back, I'll go and search for it now.  That's 4 to 6 weeks also, oh well.

Hugues Chantraine/Sean Trane can you help re: Jan Dukes De Grey's availability?

Is the US sight the same log-in as the UK sight?  Never tried that before.

Cheers, I'll see what I can do.

Greg Walker is simply the best. And among the cheapest too. Very quick serving too.

I got both my JDDG albums through him.
