Subject: If you have to say prog...with one album

As you can see I choosed 2 albums per band...the ones I think are the most representive of that band

My choice is Close to the Edge

Achtung baby! This is not a which album is better, but which represents prog at its best if you want to show maybe a friend what prog is...with just one album.

Emerson, Lake and Palmer's Brain Salad Surgery would be ideal, but since it's not on the list I went for King Crimson's In The Court of the Crimson King since it defined the genre.

I'm confused about the question, so I'll answer both.

OK for this one I might say "Bridge Across Forever" by Transatlantic. It somes up a lot of the bombast of Prog for me, in its Genre at any rate.

Poll Question: Which album represents prog at its best...????

Difficult, I'm tempted to sat "Relayer" by Yes.

As neither choices are hear, I'll choose "Selling Englsnd  By The Pound".

Maybe "Red". I think it presents a wider palette of progressive element's than "Close to The Edge", though I like that one too.

For me, It's Foxtrot, with CTTE very close second.

sorry to be so predictable, but if I had to choose 1 CD, because of my musical upbringing, CTTE is THE quintessential prog album....

I've always considered the big three albums of 1972 (Foxtrot, CttE, TaaB) to all be equal on terms as the essential prog album.  I'll vote for TaaB just because that's what I'm listening to right now.

don't mind. Why should I be frightened of dying?
There's no reason for it, you've gotta go sometime.
I never said I was frightened of dying.

I voted Pawn Hearts, which is my favorited prog album of ever, then I read El Bothy's clarification and for my idea of prog, if I had to say it with just one album, I'd say In a glass house-Gentle Giant...but ...do you think we all have the same idea of what is prog...?

ITCOTCK - my first encounter with prog, and still the album that represents the genre best.

Foxtrot or Selling England by the Pound (just hearing Firth of fifth is enough).

CTTE of course, but I voted Godbluff, cause no one picked it.

I'd like to say Relayer by Yes but it's not an option. So CTTE it is!

Thick As A Brick and A Passion Play are the albums that forged my prog taste and, with Atom Heart Mother, Wish You Were Here and DSOTM, the most familiar music for me, having listened to since my infancy!

Fortunetly, prog rock is extensive enough that its core cannot be reduced to a single album.

It was either CTTE or DSOTM but in terms of progressive music i would have to go with the majority and say Close To The Edge.

Close to the Edge and GodBluff are the most representative album.

I prefer Godbluff for the lyrics.

The first two albums i looked for were Trilogy and Brain Salad Surgery.  Sadly both of them and the band missed the poll.  From the poll i'll take Close to the Edge.  It's just as popular as everyother album on the list and has insturmental virtuosity that can rival ELP.
