Subject: Modern Italian Prog Recommendations

Michael of the Italian Prog team here...So everyone knows there's plenty of classic Italian prog releases from the Seventies period, but what about the modern era (or let's say the Nineties onwards)? The modern Italian prog-rock scene has not only had many great comeback albums from the big names of the genre from that country from the vintage period, but more importantly there's also a ton of younger bands carrying on the flame and offering some completely thrilling and vital new works that deserve a lot more exposure and recognition.
Recently fellow Prog Archives member Cindy (Omphaloskepsis) and her husband asked what I considered to be the `best of the best’ modern Italian discs...which lead me to draw a blank and freeze up, instantly overwhelmed by such a request! I mean, I have no shortage of great titles that instantly come to mind, but the best of the best...?
So a new thread was proposed that could be anything from people listing their particular top 10-20 lists of modern Italian favourites, or highlighting particular standout releases of what they consider good examples of the classic RPI/Italian Prog sound in a modern setting.
Hopefully we might come a bit closer to working out what the important or special works have been over the last twenty or so years.
So please feel free to offer your selections, your thoughts and recommendations!

Band and album number one deserving of some fresh attention, and a bit of an essential title for those wanting a great modern Italian collection:
Band: GRAN TURISMO VELOCE:
Album: Di Carne, Di Anima Year: 2011
Described perfectly by the Prog Archives own Jim (Finnforest) as “An infectious and exciting pollination of classic RPI and modern attitudes, GRAN TURISMO VELOCE is poised to make a huge splash with a wide variety of progressive rock tastes”. The group formed in 2008 in Grosseto, Tuscany, with the band taking their name from the famous Italian sportscar whose popularity spread throughout Europe in the 1970s, and the fact that in those years Italian progressive rock was doing the same. Soon the band was working with Loris Furlan of Lizard Records and their debut was released in the Spring of 2011.
On ` Di Carne, Di Anima’, the band, singing in Italian, took their influence from those 1970s prog bands and blended it with modern electronic, jazzy rock, and even some metal moods. Perfectly balancing the symphonic older style of classical piano bombast with a very grounded modern and melodic tougher sound, it remains a perfect recent Italian release for those who want to avoid a tired retro retread!
Those who heard this album upon its release predicted big things for the group, and sadly since then the buzz around them has gone a little quiet. Every now and then talks pops up of more progress having been made with new music, but nothing has really emerged just yet. Hopefully 2017 perhaps?
But for your listening pleasure, the first three tracks of the CD:
(that last one is a killer instrumental that perfectly captures that mix of old and new styles!)

What a great idea for a thread Michael
It'd interesting to focus on some music for a change up in this mother.
Sure maybe I am far from being the right person to tell anyone which modern RPI albums are the "best" as I frequently have voiced the many problems I have with contemporary production and the whole sterility that comes with it.
Be that as it may I still know and love a fair few modern releases from the bootshaped country.
My two favourite acts right this minute are Homunculus Res (more Canterburian though) and Ingranaggi Della Valle.
It will be interesting to see what other folks bring to the table

If we're going outside of the RPI umbrella, like I already did (hoho), then I would like to highlight Ske's 1000 Autunni. Such a beautiful and unique little album. Love the quirky Canterbury feel of it as well.
Miles away from any classic prog bands we have Ephel Duath. Their 2003 release The Painter's Palette really made me open up to metal yet again. 'Wow is this even possible?' I believe I said to myself.
Also in the metallic vein though more enamoured with avant and bands such as Present and Univers Zero I give you ZU. Carboniferous is the bee's knees!
Oh and if one is looking for something truly progressive and unique sounding then I wholeheartedly recommend they go check out any of Claudio Milano's endeavours. He is one interesting cat.

Yep, the links work here, just that they open up an outside screen to view them, Sam. Do the (TUBE) (/TUBE) links (replacing the ('s with ['s ) not show up on your end, mate?
Yep, these ones in particular have been very well received by lots of listeners it seems:
- Ingranaggi della Valle - Warm Spaced Blue - La Maschera di Cera - Le Porte del Domani - La Coscienza di Zeno - La Notte Anche di Giorno - Ingranaggi dela Valle - In Hoc Signo - Avenoth - La Bocca della Verità - Logos - L'Enigma della Vita
So too the Winstons one!
There's actually a cool live DVD of the Winstons available where they perform the entire album, definitely very decent.

Another great Italian band is "NOVA"... One album included members of Brand X plus Phil Collins

Nova were indeed pretty cool but calling them 'modern' is perhaps a tad too far-fetched seeing as their last album was released nearly 40 years ago

Essential modern release number two!
Band: PROGENESI:
Album: L’Ulisse: L'Alfiere Nero Year: 2013.
The band mix the instrumental dexterity of DFA, the rollicking stomp of P.F.M, the searing violin of Quella Vechio Locanda and Arti e Mestieri, with the playfulness of Fruupp, Genesis, ELP and Camel, all loaded with violin and keyboards aplenty. Despite the occasional darker flourishes, this is a truly uplifting and positively charged album, yet it's never too sweet or schmaltzy, rather it's dynamic and action packed, yet rarely bombastic and bloated.

^ I heard it dozens of times and still think there's a lot to discover yet. It's quite pleasant on the surface but a close listen will reveal its subtle complexity and I find it very rewarding. I'm not even getting into the concept, I'm sure there's a reason for the movements that only the band knows.

Same here, Sam, it's an instant `go-to' album if I can't settle and pick something else, and it's still just as exciting now as it was back then. Top notch playing and great compositions, and the nice vinyl length doesn't hurt either!

It's funny. I refrained from listening to that Logos album at the time it came out mostly because I found the guy pedalling the album on here to be rude. I remember a lot of ratings commotion.
But then I popped it on yesterday after seeing the mention in here and I absolutely adored it. Not the most original work ever sounding like Floyd teaming up with PFM, but it sounds wonderful. Only concern is the lenght of the album. Holy smokes!
I just relistened to La Conscienza di Zeno's sophomore release. Damn what happened to them after the debut? I really dig the raw and edgy feel of it compared to the buttery margarine feast that suddenly took over. Oh well maybe I will get a 'heureka' moment at some point, but I'm definitely not there yet.

^ The album doesn't seem so long when you have to get up four times to flip the records :P
The eureka moment for me was during the third listen but I didn't have any expectation, since this was the first I heard from them, but I love both albums now. And speaking of the debut, how great is this performance?

BAND: PSYCHO PRAXIS
ALBUM: Echoes from the Deep Year: 2012
A bit of a controversial album this one!
The ferocious and surging power on display throughout the debut album by Italian band Psycho Praxis, formed in Brescia in 2004, shows so much variety and highly promising talent. In addition to a kicking electric energy and frequently frantic vocal delivery, swirling flute crosses English band Jethro Tull with Italy's Quella Vecchia Locanda and Osanna, the darker jazzy atmospheres are reminiscent of Van der Graaf Generator and the dirty organ/guitar interplay gives a rough Biglietto Per L'inferno RPI sound.
There’s a pretty big BUT, though…The album employs English vocals, which seemed to be an attempt by the band to appeal to a world-wide audience. Thankfully it’s one of few English language Italian albums that still perfectly captures the manic and theatrical quality of so many of the Italian discs (yes, there are occasional examples where it works, as hard as it is for us RPI purists to accept! ).
Perhaps the English language might serve to be a good safe introduction to what the Italian bands can offer for newcomers, and that can’t be a bad thing! Sadly no follow-up release to date, so let’s keep our fingers crossed!

Cindy here! Thanks so much for the thread. Me and hubby are listening to Unreal City's second album right now and loving it. I'm partial to Logos because I love David Gilmore. GULDBAMSEN said it better,
"It's funny. I refrained from listening to that Logos album at the time it came out mostly because I found the guy pedalling the album on here to be rude. I remember a lot of ratings commotion. But then I popped it on yesterday after seeing the mention in here and I absolutely adored it. Not the most original work ever sounding like Floyd teaming up with PFM, but it sounds wonderful "
My husband likes the avant-garde RPI more. I like it smooth, he likes it raw, smooth and hard.
We'll play our CD collection of around 20 modern RPI discs over the next few weeks and rate them. We look forward to test driving recommendations the PA crowd recommends! Thank you so much for this thread! It's like having a panel of world famous chefs discussing their favorite recipes! I can't wait to dig in!

Yeah, it's one of Zuffanti's and that is a pretty apt description. The five tracks on the album are all versions of Italian 1970s TV show themes - and even without knowing the originals, which I don't, there is a kinda hauntological vibe to it. It's a bit more leftfield than Z's usual stuff and a very fun listen, well worth hunting down.

I bought the CD a couple of years ago and it didn't truly click yet, probably more because of the Tullian sound than the vocals. I should give it another spin though.

Thank YOU, Cindy, for every essentially suggesting it! It's probably long overdue, and it's great already seeing others step in with great recommendations and updates! It's also a nice opportunity for me personally to keep learning from others and broadening even my own knowledge...and be reminded of bands and albums that have slipped by!
You've got my pledge to maintain this properly too, so that means lots of obscure recommendations about little known or somewhat forgotten titles too that need a bit of fresh exposure!
I also wouldn't mind possibly implementing a `Get To Know'.... kind of thing that introduces newer bands, maybe by way of short interview question/answers or spruiks their latest release.

Next modern Italian album recommendation:
Band: IL CERCHIO D'ORO
Album: Il Viaggio di Colombo Year: 2008
Technically, Il Cerchio d'Oro are a vintage band! They formed back in 1974, but only released a handful of singles (many of which were in a disco style!) at the time, although a compilation on the Mellow Records label showed up that compiled both those and some badly recorded demos from the same era. But the first official ICdO album arrived in 2008, `Il Viaggio di Colombo', and it was well received by Italian prog fans, very much a textbook example of modern symphonic-styled Italian prog (with tons of lovely piano), but there was a nice bite to the electric guitars in parts too. The album cover looked a treat on vinyl, and it's possibly still their best release to date.
The band delivered a lovely and tasteful follow-up `Dedalo e Icaro' in 2013 that won them over more fans, and they're apparently releasing a new album very shortly.

You know, I was absolutely certain that I reviewed that early compilation many years ago, but I can't find anything here! I've definitely got the CD in my collection, maybe I should do a belated catch-up! I DEFINITELY remember I interviewed the band for the Archives many years back, would you have come across it in the past, Sam? I think it turned out pretty well because the band gave such superb responses: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=94313" rel="nofollow - http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=94313
OK, now that I look back on that interview, seems like I might have been thinking of the various mentions of that compilation and those early singles throughout it as opposed to posting an actual review!

Band: MOOGG
Album: Le Ore I Giorni Gli Anni Year: 2011
There’s a few Italian bands that have been active over the modern era that are influenced by the Canterbury sound (D.F.A, Homunculus Res and the Winstons instantly come to mind), and similarly, the inspirations of Mooog, formed in Brescia in 2003, range from seventies prog to jazz rock, from psychedelia to Canterbury. Their debut album in 2011 on the Mellow Records label, "Le ore i giorni gli anni" (The hours, the days, the years) instantly combined a love for bands such as Caravan and Hatfield and the North, as well as plenty of funky passages, strong melodic arrangements and a mostly upbeat air.
The band have just released a follow-up in 2016 entitled `Italian Luxury Style’ that is meant to be even better, but this is a fine and easy place to start if you want an addition to your modern collection of an Italian interpretation of the Canterbury sound that's very easy on the ear
(Although I have to admit, I’ve started noticing on my last several spins that a lot of the keyboard solos all sound very similar on it! Just my imagination?)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDo_Ui_rYs0" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDo_Ui_rYs0 (The great and infectious opener, instantly gives you an idea of what to expect on the disc)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fNdGFzyUho" rel="nofollow - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fNdGFzyUho (I love this track, some darker and heavier moody moments, shows they’re not just some Canterbury `tribute’ act)

Sam, I will admit, the follow-up `Italian Luxury Style' from 2016 kind of wipes the floor with it (which is high praise, considering this debut is totally charming anyway!)! I'll post a review for it shortly, but it's much more varied, lots more instrumental passages, heaps of a Seventies fusion vibe as well. Really impressive stuff!
Would have likely ended up on my end of year best if I'd got to the disc that bit sooner!
Pretty sure it's also easily found on that same related Bandcamp page too, give it a spin!

BAND: ACCORDO DEI CONTRARI
ALBUM: AdC YEAR: 2014
Hailing from Bologna, Accordo dei Contrari have delivered four albums to date of frenetic fusion displays, each more ambitious and technically accomplished than the last. The debut self-titled work was reliable, the second `Kublai’, which would probably be the best place to start for most newcomers to the group, implemented more Canterbury jazz styles (as well as featuring contributions from Caravan/Hatfield and the North’s Richard Sinclair), but their third `AdC’ was their busiest and noisiest work up to that point, adding sophisticated classical flights, Post-Rock cinematic flavours, Rock in Opposition/Avant textures and ambient passages to truly offer no better definition of a `fusion' of styles!
Recorded over three days with only the slightest of overdubs, `AdC’ delivered never-ending musical eruptions effortlessly flowing from one seamless instrumental movement to the next and back, yet always remaining melodic and endlessly groovy. There were still little references to other Italian fusion acts like D.F.A, Arti e Mestieri, Perigeo and the Canterbury sounds from the previous album, as well as a general frantic Area-like attack overall, but the Accordo members were definitely forging their own path and had never sounded so tight and focused.
As mentioned by a few others on here, their latest `Violato Intatto’ has just come out too, so that should be well worth exploring.
Highly recommended for both heavier fusion and R.I.O/Avant fans!

Jim, that 2009 Delirium one `Il Nome del Vento' is fantastic...and it was also not only the very first Delirium album I ever heard and owned, but one of the very first Italian prog albums I truly get into! It was a blind-buy back at the time it was released, and I obsessed over it at the time!
Oddly I missed their most recent album from the last year, will need to catch up on that one.

Next recommendation:
Band: LE PORTE NON APERTE
Album: Golem Year: 2013
Le Porte non Aperte are a band that very much fly under the radar, despite the fact that they have performed at concerts with a range of Italian prog-music notables such as Il Bacio della Medusa, Osanna, Goad, Spettri and Il Tempio della Clessidre.
If you’re one of those listeners that finds many of the modern Italian discs a bit too clean and polished, there’s a good chance Le Porte non Aperte will be just the band you’re looking for! While there’s still plenty of ravishing piano, their debut album `Golem’ is quite unfancy in comparison to many new Italian discs, with the vocalist Sandro Parrinello delivering a grumbling and gravelly bellow of a darker croon, and there’s no end of huffing flute darting around dirty snarling guitars to sometimes remind of the first Biglietto per L‘Inferno album.
No second album so far, but let’s hope for a follow-up soon. Some will likely find the vocals a bit of a challenge, and the disc is probably overlong at 61 minutes, but we need more dirtier and tougher Italian bands like this!

I did indeed had some troubles getting into those vocals at first.
But after repeated listening I started liking them.
Not sure about the band status at all, they teased about a second album
quite a bit. But there was very little heard from them.
They posted a picture from the band in a studio not to long ago.
So there is hope for a second one!

A list of great albums I left off of my Top 20 list (for various reasons, some being older, some I just forgot).
These ones deserve a special mentioning.
Eris Pluvia - Rings of earthly Light
One of the greatest albums of Pastoral Prog ever. Wonderful melodic folky stuff with awesome atmoshpere.
LABIRINTO DI SPECCHI - Hanblecheya
Feat. Pholas Dactylus' front man Paolo Carelli on vocals (voice). A mindblowin mix of 70s Prog and Psych with Post Rock and Electronics.
Jet Lag - Delusione Ottica
This one sounds like a lost classic from the 70s. And while that is said about many bands, this time it's tottaly true.
Tale Cue - Voices Beyond My Curtain
I'm not to much in Neo Prog, but this one is just awesome. It falls or stays with getting into the most peculiar vocal style of Laura Basla. Her haunted "Angst" ladden singing style (in somewhat strange English) is not for everyone (I totally love it).
Il Paradiso degli Orchi - Il Corponauta
A perfect mix of many influences old and new. Just a great listen.
Ezra Winston - Ancient Afternoons
Somehow this one doesn't get to much love here. I think it's one of the best Synph Prog albums recorded after the 70s.
Nuova Era - Il Passo Del Soldato
An important band for new Italian Prog. I like this on the most, although it's slightly different to their other albums.
DAAL- Dodecahedron
Very different from their normaly more electronic albums, this is dark bombastic 70s organ Prog.
Mad Fellaz - II
Perfect proggy Jazz Rock with great female vocals. Just a delight.
La Curva di Lesmo - La Curva di Lesmo
A joint effort of well known musicians and an album of great variety. Great cover art, great vocals, just a great album.

But speaking of pastoral modern Italian albums, I'm sure you would have picked up that `Les Châteaux de la Loire' disc by Ellesmere, which features the bass player from Taproban?
I've got it but not nearly listened to it enough yet. Very special though!

I can't recommend Eris Pluvia enough, maybe the best Italian Album from the 90s.
(their comeback albums are rather average)
I think Ellesmere was to "Ant Phillips" style (who is present I think) for me when I checked it.
Wasn't it sung in French by the RRR vocalist?
I will check it again, thank you.

Next album and band recommendation:
Band: IL GIARDINO ONIRICO
Album: Perigeo Year: 2012
First impressions can be quite deceiving with this band! Not a classical Italian prog/RPI-sounding group, Il Giardino Onirico, formed in 2008, often fill their music on their debut `Perigeo’ from 2012 with drifting spacerock elements, a Riverside-like crunch of heavy riffing guitars and a strong Pink Floyd influence to the plentiful epic crisp guitar soloing. But careful listening also reveals no shortage of lavish alternating acoustic/electric passages, soaring symphonic synth themes and even moody spoken word passages, and the album is full of variety, colour and always remains highly melodic.
The group followed up their debut with a reworking of an early demo entitled `Complesso K’ that was equally as good, and there will likely be new music from them very soon. Both albums should also still be available on CD.
Definitely a very modern sounding band, Il Giardino Onirico will appeal to fans of the instrumental side of Riverside, later heavier Porcupine Tree era and Pink Floyd, with a touch of Italian prog fancy implemented in subtle ways!

Next modern Italian prog recommendation:
Band: IL SEGNO DEL COMANDO:
Album: Il Segno del Comando Year: 1997
Genova's Il Segno del Comando (The Sign of Command) take their name from a 1970's novel by Giussepe D'Agata and Italian TV series of the same title that dealt with occult matters, reincarnation and the supernatural. Formed in 1995 by musicians Mercy and Diego Banchero, the project came to the attention of Genova's own Black Widow Records, and with the addition of extra musicians, the 1997 debut self-titled album was recorded in two weeks on a shoestring budget.
The music is full of classical gothic atmosphere, spooky overwhelming arrangements, cinematic drama and eerie nightmare soundscapes that crawl under your skin. Complex lyrics based around a fascination of gothic literature and esoteric texts are a highlight, frequently contrasting the normality of everyday life with the mystery of the paranormal. The music is very organ driven, with plenty of use of Mellotron and analogue synths for an authentic vintage sound. The piano is frequently classical and theatrical based, bringing an important characteristic that many of the defining Italian bands featured. Folky acoustic guitar passages are reflective and thoughtful, while the grand electric solos can echo Antonio Bartoccetti (Antonius Rex/Jacula) and even CAMEL, heavy, but never enough to have the band confused for being a metal act. Lead vocalist Mercy has a deep, crooning, and intimidating delivery, and bassist Diego has a thick upfront Seventies prog sound that just dominates the album! Add in some psychedelic passages, modern electronic elements and a general wild, uninhibited and experimental approach to make the band truly stand out.
The band have offered three superb albums to date all up, with the second `Der Golem’ in 2002 adding a stronger touch of metal and a more lavish production, and the third in 2013 `Il Volto Verde’ introducing female vocals for a more prominent gothic sound, but the one that will likely be of the most interest to classic Italian prog fans is this self-titled debut, where the acid-rock guitar sound and rawer production harkens back to the vintage Italian prog acts.
Il Segno del Comando are for fans of the dark side of the Italian progressive scene such as Goblin, Abiogenesi and the above mentioned Antonius Rex and Jacula, as well as the works of international bands such as MY DYING BRIDE and MORTE MACABRE.

Do you think there will be a large general pressing of that Il Segno live album, H? I know that Il Ballo delle Castagne album `Soundtrack for Unreleased Herzog Film' was initially a very small vinyl release, but later had a CD issue put out by the Black Widow label, so I'm hoping, because of Il Segno's dealings with that label in the past, that we might be able to get ahold of a copy much easier at some point in the near future?

Next modern recommendation:
Band: LINEATEORICA
Album: Lineateorica Year: 2014
After several line-up changes and almost twenty years of honing their craft, 2014 finally saw Italian band Lineateorica properly enter the R.P.I scene with a promising 25 minute self-titled EP, and a fiery, varied and energetic little disc it was! Lineateorica can be placed alongside other Italian progressive acts such as Cervello, Procession, Rocky’s Filj and Osage Tribe, due to the fact that they recorded albums that do not use keyboards! This unusual characteristic means that their debut EP `Lineateorica’ placed more attention on contrasting acoustic and electric guitar passages with strong melodic song-writing and energetic vocals, as well as a focus on flute and confident drumming.
What makes the band and their disc so great is that they take recognizable elements of the classic RPI bands, but fuse it to a younger melodic rock sound, so this is hardly a lazy retro excursion!
Please take a listen to this clips, so much potential in this great band, and hopefully we get a whole length album from them in the near future!

As far as I'm informed it's a CD not a LP in some special packaging (whatever that means).
It's limited to 100 pieces. Maybe there will be an issue without that packaging later.
I think Black Widow Records is behind this somehow, so there is hope.

I haven't heard it in years, but their debut and fourth albums especially are very highly regarded, and that is why I blind-bought this new one - good reputation!

I definitely haven't got any of there albums yet, Jim, but a few months back I caught up on Macroscream's `Sisyphus'. For some reason I was sure you reviewed it, but perhaps I was mistaken! Did you at least used to recommend it or something?
I still get a bit of an immature guilty laugh from the cover, I always seem to think it's of someone pushing a giant testicle against a hairy ass! (Sorry Macroscream!)

I never thought about the cover being that, but now that you say it......

Ah HA, and now you can't UNSEE it ever again, Jim, right?!
Sorry, man....I was literally heading back here to post `sorry folks, that's easily the worst comment I've ever posted on the Archives forum', but you replied first!
If anything, it's more how screwy my brain must be wired, because ever since I noticed that cover I've always thought `Hmmmm, that cover....kinda looks like....'
Guru Guru's `Hinten' eat your heart out!

It shows the Italians certainly have more artistic presentation flair than the Germans

Please no more pictures
Was any Zaum released on CD?
Macroscream's second album was much better (and had a harmless cover)
Didn't like the lastest Nuova Era to much.
Does any one remember this one?

Hey at least we didn't post the Swan/unspeakable acts cover!
Can't remember if Zaum had a CD.
And yes, I do recall that Obscura album...I had it and reviewed in back in another life
