Someone started a thread like this in one of the other forums in which I post. It doesn't have to be all prog though mine basically works out to be all prog bands...almost.

1. Dream Theater
2. Pink Floyd
3. Rush
4. Marillion
5. Anathema
6. Steven Wilson projects
7. Neal Morse projects
8. Yes
9. The Flower Kings
10. Epica

I guess it's all prog. Epica's latest album has prog metal written all over it.

There are some bands I love that released just a bunch of records (like National Health and Hatfield and the North) so I can't put them in my list because of that.
In no particular order:

Morbid Angel
ELP
Jethro Tull
The Ramones (...and I hate punk!)
L'arc en Ciel

Honorable mentions:
Caravan, VDGG, Iron Maiden, Camel, Rush, Hikaru Utada, Sex Machineguns, The Beatles, KC...

Yup...should've listed Faust as well....and Popol Vuh, Klaus Schulze, Magma, Caravan, COS, Crimson and the list goes on and on.
Maybe these threads aren't for me either because I change my mind all the time or perhaps because I keep searching for new stuff? Nahh no rhyme or reason methinks.

Artist lists never seem to be properly representative of my actual listening tastes. So many of my favorite albums are by groups I otherwise have little interest in. There aren't many acts from whom I've heard a multitude of albums, much less good albums. Even most of these are here primarily for 2 or 3 noteworthy albums.

1. Van Der Graaf Generator
2. Don Cherry
3. Earth
4. Tangerine Dream
5. Einsturzende Neubauten
6. Sun Ra
7. King Crimson
8. Gentle Giant
9. Nurse With Wound
10. The Pop Group

If I could count Talk Talk and .O.rang as one group, that'd make the list.

Posted By: Guldbamsen
Date Posted: May 07 2017 at 08:28
All their albums are recorded live and totally free-form. The purple one from August 74 (if memory serves me right?) as well as the one from 72 (which I reviewed or at least tried to review) are both stellar, but to be honest with you, I don't think you can wrong in their discography. That also means that it's a hard nut to crack if you don't 'get' or indeed dig the first album you try out; chances are you'll feel the same about the rest of their output.
Though after having seen your posts on here methinks you'll find lots to love in their output.
Pick anyone of their albums you can find and expect the universe to zoom into your brain like an inside-out black hole.

Something like this (today, anyway):

Yes
Marshall Tucker Band
Bubu
Lynyrd Skynyrd
King Crimson
Allman Brothers Band
Harmonium
Outlaws
Arco Iris
PFM

I'm never too satisfied with any of the lists I make in these top artists threads since the majority of my favourite music comes from artists who only put out one or two albums.

Thanks to everyone who has posted so far. Not only does this help me get to know some of you but it makes for good recommendations.

I like that mostly non-prog metal has been mentioned. I know pretty much all there is to know about prog metal and the bands under that umbrella, but as far as the other sub-genres of prog rock there is a wealth of music I've yet to explore. With my job there can sometimes be a lot of downtime, so besides read I also like to discover new music.

Yes
Genesis
Jethro Tull
Caravan
Beatles
Led Zep

Being a 14 year old boy I listen to lots of different kinds of music, and around September 2016 a friend of mine introduced me to prog. Here's my top 15 in no order:

Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree (probably my favorite)
Pink Floyd (my dad introduced me to them a while back but I had no idea what prog was at the time)
Genesis
VdGG
PFM
Harmonium (my dad is French Canadian, so Harmonium was a huge part of his childhood and he passed his love of them on to me)
Magma
Phideaux
The Flower Kings
Frank Zappa
Hawkwind
Rush (good old Canadian boys!)
Supertramp (not really prog but still great)
Caravan
Mike Oldfield

These are my all time favourite bands in chronological order in regards to when they formed:
The Beatles
The Kinks
Jethro Tull
King Crimson
Wishbone Ash
Focus
Gentle Giant
Horslips
Japan
The Cure
Skids
Simple Minds
Magazine
Echo and the Bunnymen
Big Country
The Armoury Show
Living Colour
Radiohead
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci
Mogwai
Arctic Monkeys

I took a few liberties.....21 instead of 10!

Presently, I am really getting into the Welsh band Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. Might have to suggest they get included into either Prog folk or Eclectic Prog. They are (were) amazing...pop tendencies with lots of Prog interspersed IMHO. Their 1997 album Barafundle is brilliant.

Anyone share my love of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci?

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Opeth
Frank Zappa

Nice to see another Helstar fan, they're one of the few bands where I love every single one of their albums. Burning Star is one of my all time favorites, I have a review of it over at MetalMusicArchives if you're interested. The underrated Multiples of Black is also one of my favorites.

Nice to see another Helstar fan, they're one of the few bands where I love every single one of their albums. Burning Star is one of my all time favorites, I have a review of it over at MetalMusicArchives if you're interested. The underrated Multiples of Black is also one of my favorites.

I haven't heard everything they've put out but I wholeheartedly agree with you. each album (I've heard) is consistently great!

It's funny how the core of my list hasn't changed much. I even had REM just now but removed them. They would still be a bubbling under band for me though. Yes, I know I might be the only one on this forum who likes them. I also like the Smiths and the Cure but don't know them well enough to put them on a list. I forgot Kansas this time around too. I also am a big fan of Black Sabbath but didn't squeeze them in this time or even last time for that matter. I guess the bottom line is I still have a lot of music to explore. Don't we all? Wink

At this moment (no order):

Barclay James Harvest
Camel
Jethro Tull
Damanek
Wobbler
Beardfish
Rikard Sjöblom's Gungfly
The Flower Kings
Gentle Giant
Gösta Berlings Saga

Guess I'm on a scandinavian / eclectic streak.
And I just get rid of my old loves. The only ones dissappearing out of sight are; Saga and Marillion

To qualify as a "favourite artist", an artist needs to have released at least three albums that I have and like. This excludes a lot of excellent artists that for one reasone or another I only have one or two of their albums. After creating a list of qualifying artists, choosing ten from the list proved difficult. The ten I chose from the many I didn't choose was based more on recent preferences.

My favourite artist is:

01. Van der Graaf Generator / Peter Hammill

The remainder of the list is in no particular order:

02. Yes
03. Pink Floyd
04. Mahavishnu Orchestra
05. Hawkwind
06. Black Sabbath
07. Emerson Lake and Palmer
08. The Residents / Snakefinger
09. Magma
10. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard

10. Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree
9. Kate Bush
8. Trans-Siberian Orchestra
7. 311 (not exactly prog but they're childhood faves of mine)
6. Frost*
5. Ayreon
4. Rush
3. Neal Morse/Transatlantic/Spock's Beard (Morse Era)
2. Yes
1. Dream Theater

This is just a rough, "off-the-top-of-my-head" ranking, the order here is definitely subject to change. Certain bands almost made it, such as The Flower Kings, Symphony X, Satellite, Syzygy, and several others (it's really hard to narrow it down to just 10).

I have a special interest in Scandinavian prog and Finnish prog is something I am always on the lookout for.
Uzva is for me the best progband from Finland ever, followed by Pekka Pohjola, Piirpauke, WigWam and Tasavallan Presidentii. Other great bands include Taipuva Luotisuora, Hidria Spacefolk and Jeavestone. But there is so much more, I can't think of out of the blue (without googlesearching).

But why would you say other bands are better than Uzva, when I list it as a favorite band? It comes over as rude and condescending. I hope you mean better than that.

Have a wonderful day.
