I've searched and not seen this topic, but if it's already posted or in play let me know. If not...
Prog Wars (NOT copyright Trollheart MMXVI) works like this: you post two albums, people vote on which they prefer, the better one (as in, the one with more votes) goes through to face the next choice, and so on. I prefer not to allow the more classic albums, ie ones against which little or nothing has a chance, so no Close to the Edge, Dark Side etc. Once the votes have been tallied and we have a clear winner, we move on to the next album, but no new suggestions until the current "battle" has been completed.
You can give your reasons for voting, if you want, though that's not mandatory, and once an album has been "defeated" it cannot be re-entered into a fresh battle. All results are final, and if you miss a battle, tough: it won't be refought.
Anyone know of this/interested? For the sake of argument, I'll pop two up here which I think stand a chance against each other and may provoke a little debate:
Fugazi, second album from Marillion
VS Union, "reunion" Yes album
Vote now!

If you're tallying votes, wouldn't it be easier to do this as a poll in the polls sections?

Not really; the way it worked on other sites it's more about the visual development of the votes and the comments and banter associated with the voting. It's better, I feel, to see how many votes each album has in each post and argue about it or crow with triumph than to reduce this to a mere sterile poll. That's just my feeling on it, anyway.

I get the point, although one can still banter and discuss votes within a polls thread....it simply makes the counting much easier and probably more accurate. In any case, your thread, your rules!
So for me, Fugazi smokes Yes of this era.....and its the best Fish album imo.

If we're talking best Marillion albums of the Fish era, I have to disagree. For me, it's, in order Script Misplaced Childhood Fugazi Clutching at Straws
If you go beyond that, probably something like, again in order
Brave Seasons End This Strange Engine Marbles Radiation Marillion.com Afraid of Sunlight Happiness is the Road

Okay guys I think we can call this for the Fishy one and his pals. So the winner is Fugazi by a very clear 10-2 score. Who wants to go up against the jester then? First to post creates the next battle, assuming it's acceptable (no seriously obscure albums obviously and no out and out classics).

Consider it tied
Marillion 6 Caravan 6
|
Posted By: Trollheart
Date Posted: November 20 2016 at 14:47
There won't be a tie, as such, as the reigning champion will always be seen to be, in any unbreakable tie, one point ahead by virtue of having beaten the previous album(s) it came up against. So if there were no more votes at all, Fugazi would still win.
But yes, at the moment, it's a dead heat. If there's no appreciable gap being opened up we can just decide on a limit, say, a day or two days, after which the contest is decided and the next challenger is up. Sound ok to everyone?
Also, in case anyone thinks the rule above is unfair, that then Fugazi could never be beaten, that's not true: it's only in cases of a tie that it comes into play. If this had gone Fugazi 6 Camel 10 for instance, then the dromedaries would have won and be the new champion against whom the next album would try its luck.

In a level of composition, Third easily beats Plump, but I don't like the roughness of Third, I prefer the versions from the 'BBC Sessions' or 'Alive in Paris 1970', both more enjoyable than Third, in my opinion. Plump is very good, not the best. I'll go for sound quality and 'Backwards'.

But Caravan is probably the most popular Canterbury Scene band, particularly amongst people who never really delved into Canterbury Scene music, or don't consider themselves to be fans of the subgenre..

Third against Land of Grey and Pink would probably be close, and I'd bet it'd go to Caravan. But Plump is at best their third most well-known and liked album, going up against what some consider to be one of prog's magnum opuses.

True, but in my experience many people just vote for whatever band they like based on maybe one album they like irregardless of the actual album in question. However, I suspect that that wouldn't happen so much when people make the effort to write in their response rather than just click on a poll option.

OK, you guys jumped the gun there. Technically, there needs to be a clear gap of five votes between albums before a winner is declared. Remember, at the beginning Fugazi was aceing it and could easily have been declared the winner, so just because you're a Caravan fan you don't get to say when the battle is over: it's my thread, so I do that. Just for the future. Unless it's like totally obvious to everyone, which this was not. I'm a little stung that Marillion got kicked aside so quickly, when i think it still could have gone either way, but for the sake of peace and harmony I'll let it go. In future though, be aware of the rule. If I'm not here to declare a winner and it's a clear five-point gap then you can declare victory without me, but please ensure there's no more jumping the gun. Thanks.
As for this one, I know zero about either band (see my "History of Prog Rock" blog) so will abstain and see how this plays out.
Carry on. Caravanning. Sorry.

It is, but games have rules. You can't play Monopoly and just buy hotels everywhere you don't own. There needs to be some sort of agreed limits, otherwise as soon as one album goes ahead it'll be getting declared the winner, which is somewhat pointless. The idea is to have fun, of course, but also to be fair to the two choices and to anyone who hopes to see their album win.
