From Nektar's Facebook page: "It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our friend, comrade, rock legend and father, Roye Albrighton, who passed away peacefully last night. May his six fingered chords and the warmth of his smile last eternal." Was lucky enough to have met him once a few years ago. Great guy and very accommodating. He gladly waited while I ran out to my car after he got off stage to grab a vinyl cover for him to sign. It now hangs on my wall. Very sad day. -------------  Time always wins. |

I got the sad news on the train home from from Ian on Facebook. Going to watch the 2002 and reunion concert tonight. Glad to hear he passed peacefully. I can't believe he doesn't have his own biographical entry in Wikipedia. Someone should fix that... 1949-2016 ------------- Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I still remember hearing "Desolation Valley" for the first time - I was blown away by Roye's guitar playing and his wonderful singing. Then, I bought Remember the Future album and was once again blown away by his abilities. His lyrics were also very beautiful. R.I.P. Roye, you've been a great inspiration. |

The music of Nektar means so much to me, I couldn't imagine life without them. Thanks for the music Roye, you will be sorely missed. Heartfelt condolences to all his family and loved ones. |

Hi, I'm not sure there are words, paints, chords ... you name it ... that can excite the amazing inspiration that you have been for a long time in my life, from the first time I ever heard anything by your band, which was when the album "A Tab in the Ocean" had just come out, and was introduced by Guy Guden to an unsuspecting person with not enough English, happily enjoying Hawkwind on his earphones! That smae night, I also heard "Selling England by the Pound" ... and again, my musical tastes were changed forever. I was lucky enough to see NEKTAR during their first and second American tours and met them backstage and while I was quite tonguetied, in the end, it added a memory to my lifetime that is hard to describe altogether, with so many valuable experiences and music. In my book, this was one of the giants in the "progressive music" scene, and although we like to mention Genesis, ELP and King Crimson, in many ways, a band like NEKTAR, also offered something of value to us all, that was not being heard, but I can tell you that it was mercilessly played in Santa Barbara by Guy Guden in his heyday on the air. I'm sure, at this moment, that Guy is also having a tear or two, for an artist that really made the world better for many of us, and for that, we have a lot to thank and appreciate. RIP my friend. | Another great one lost. I had the great pleasure of seeing Nektar live once here in Massachusetts, in 2004. It was supposed to be a double bill with Caravan, but they had to back out at the last minute. At the time I was more into Caravan than Nektar, so I actually considered not going - so glad I went. They played a great, long set drenched in psychedelia to a small but enthusiastic crowd, and I was converted. Wish I could have seen them another time, but it seemed they could never get another US tour together. RIP Roye. |

I have always wanted to collect more Nektar ever since I first heard Recylced in the late 70s, an album I still love to listen to. In the decades since, I have only collected a few more (Magic is the Child, Evolution, Remember the Future, and Down to Earth), all of which I enjoy and all of which sound very different from one another. The band and especially Roye Albrighton were never given the attention they deserved. I have to thank Steve Harris and his band Iron Maiden, for turning me on to Nektar, courtesy of their cover of King Of Twilight (back when I discovered it around - 1986-ish). Even 1980's Man In The Moon, is a high quality album - though offering a more 'Arena Rock' styling, offers quite a chunk of impressive Prog-Rock that we all know and love. Underrated. Absolutely ADORE their last album Time Machine. Roye and the gang hit a home-run with that one. A really special album. I'm sad that Roye has transcended beyond our Mortal existence, may his soul spread its magic wherever it may roam.... |

I was in a nightclub in the Black Forest in Germany in 1973 and they played King of Twilight and I was hooked. I then learned they were playing in Freiburg supporting, as Bomber Harris put it 'somewhat incompatibly', Frank Zappa on his Grand Wazoo tour. I had to see them...Zappa wasn't bad either. Fast forward 35 years and I travelled to Leverkusen to see them again. Lucky enough to bump into Roye outside the venue and we had a great chat - an absolute gentleman. Nektar were the sole act on that night and must have played almost 3 hours. I was searching the net to find out when they were next due to tour and found to my horror Roye had passed away. What a great shame. I spent the weekend watching their 2 DVDs and listening to their albums I hadn't played for a few years. They never really made it commercially in the UK but thank goodness I was working in Germany at the time when I was introduced to their great music. End of an era. RIP Roye

I completly agree with this above comment because those two albums are what introduced me to Roye and Nektar back when the albums came out. Just hearing this news now is very sad indeed. Those two albums will forever be in my heart. Thanks Roye and cheers. |
