Topic: Songs you can't standPosted By: Modrigue
Subject: Songs you can't stand
Date Posted: June 17 2016 at 06:25
This topic is a little provocative...
There are songs you don't like but that you can bear hearing.
But which are the songs you cannot stand listening to? These songs that were broadcasted too many times or immediately gives you the urge to push the "next" button / change the radio station?
Please cite precise songs names and not just a band or a genre.
The idea of this thread is songs that you can't stand, not the "I don't like disco or hip-hop" or "I don't like David Guetta" sort of things.
For me:
The Fugees (or whoever sings this... thing ) - Killing Me Softly with His Song
The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony
Rush - Closer to the Heart
Mike Oldfield - Moonlight Shadow
Genesis - I Know What I Like

This topic is in "General music", so it can be any genre.
During my teenage years, I remember "Killing Me Softly" and "Bitter Sweet Symphony" being over-broadcasted by TV and radios.

Well the op was posted in general music discussions, so feel free to bring the vile - prog or not Btw agree on Oasis and Coldplay, but there is a lot of interesting hip hop out there for my tastes (not the kind you'll hear on the radio though).

Concerning Oasis, Coldplay, or other bands and genres, please cite precise songs names.
The Coldplay I discovered at the end of the 90's is not the same as the actual Coldplay.

I used to date this girl who was absolutely smitten by them. She loved all and everything from the band, and I of course had no other choice than to bear with her, admittedly, psychopathic ways. I really tried liking them - most of all because it would improve the time I spent with her tenfolds, yet no dice. The more I listened the more apparent it became that Nickelback were making the same song over and over again. I have yet to hear a song from them that sounds different from ANY of their other tunes. Maybe it's the singers voice that does it? Every time I hear it my brain instantly tries fleeing out of my ear.

There are many, many songs I dislike but my husband and I once spent a long car journey whittling the "worst songs in the universe" list down to the Eagle's Life in the Fast Lane and Steve Miller's The Joker. Both of which made us want to rip our ears off rather than ever hear them again.
I could also make a good argument for When I'm 64. What a waste of time and talent.

KRDL, Kurdle 109. We spoil music for everyone The less I hear radio (or watch TV) the more sane I am, although sometimes, even without that, it's impossible not to get sick of whatever Pop hit is currently trendy It's more positive to make lists of music I love, so I won't even start this one. I'm sure you haven't listened to some Coldplay you like, if you like Radiohead, you'll appreciate some Coldplay - if you're able to give them a chance:
The first and last song of The Blue Room EP (Bigger Stronger and Such A Rush (from 14:32)) have a very deep mood which runs through the whole album.

This song was the bane of my supermarket employee years, used to play EVERY SINGLE DAY, such an aggravating little ditty, until one day I finally looked it up and was shocked to discover it was Fleetwood Mac!
I don't think I've heard it in a decade by this point, although before then I was finally starting to enjoy some Fleetwood Mac albums and it's evil spell no longer works on me thankfully! I don't love it, but I can listen to it if I spin the album.

This Charming Man [actually the title of the song is irrelevant, as is its lyrics and music (if you can call it that, it sounds more like the dying throws of an internal combustion engine that has suffered a total lubrication failure and is moments away from terminal seizure) as every song Stephen Patrick Morrissey nasally whines sound the same to me.]
Apparently I also have a low tolerance for songs by Simply Red but as I don't know a single song title by them I can't really contribute anything constructive.

There aren't really any pop songs I hate with a passion; I'm just completely impartial to them.
For prog/related songs that I can't stand, though:
The Who - Christmas
The Who - Underture
The Who - Go To The Mirror
Actually, just put down everything on that album except for Pinball Wizard
Led Zeppelin - Dancing Days
Led Zeppelin - In My Time of Dying
Genesis - Watcher of The Skies

I finally figured out what the deal is with Nickelback: They're a country band (modern-type, "bro" country) masquerading as a rock band. If you added a fiddle and a pedal steel and took the fuzztone down a skosh, they would be indistinguishable from what you hear on country stations. And Nashville is sticklers for rules - everything MUST sound the same, OR ELSE, because they've run the numbers and they know that's what the people want.

(Two horrible excuses for patterned sound)
Thanks for that hug Bob. Much needed after that ordeal The last time I listened to Fernando was together with an old friend of mine. We were fixing to go out on the town, but instead of drinking beers at my apartment where all the brilliant music resides, we somehow got stranded at his dad's place, and there was LITERALLY nothing to chose from. We then decided to do a 'sarcastic' warm up and found the most terrible tune we could think of, Fernando, and then proceeded to put it on repeat. 3 hours later we stumbled into the city with bleeding ears and a huge grin from ear to ear.
I guess I consider ABBA to be part of that special kitsch group of artists that are so incredibly bad that there actually is something funny about them. Sorta like putting Smurf hits on the ol stereo. A whole lotta fun if I'm inebriated but horrendous if I'm not.
My parents love ABBA though

Can't help but notice that if a song has been played too often on the radio has ruined the number for many. Now, if you'd only heard it once or twice would your perceptions be different?
Noticed one of the most hideous covers ever mentioned so I shall do it a disservice by shaming it again.
Scissor Sisters and that dreadful version of Comfortably Numb. That's when you feel sorry for whoever had to endure the session, the producer, engineer, coffee making personnel. Did they get permission for that monstrosity? I mean... even Van Morrison's singing on the Berlin show is more enjoyable than that and that is on my least favourite of my favourite's list.
There was a number... Usher I think, (dunno or forgotten the name of the song) that had a phone ringing in it. Used to drive me mad. Foo Fighters... (I'd do as requested and name a song but if memory serves me well I've forgotten. Struck me as bland and featureless. Which reminds me, 80s pop. Anyone familiar with the New Tricks episode where our heroes had to visit an 80s radio station will understand what I mean...
By the way I used to hear all this scheisse at the gym. No gym now, no audio dreck. If the rap has good craft i.e. nice rhythm in the vocal (heard one or two here and there, then no problem). If the rap I heard and dislike was rock or pop I'd dislike it just as much.
Hip Hop where they think they know what they are doing drum wise (it is like an assault without and end) also drives me spare. Find out about how drumming works please. God the public have no sense me thinks...
An all time low point (I really recommend not playing the link - warning label ... John Rowles - Cheryl Moana Marie) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCxWdVJTlpY David Gilmour said he hated rock steady vibrato; set his teeth on edge. Me too. Here is an example. And this is dental torture without the anesthetic.
What next? Oh yes.
Radiohead - OK Computer - cannot isolate one track from this - it is consistent. Supposed to be the DSOTM of the '90s? By what standard was this assessed? I've heard garage punk new wave kids better than this. Oasis sounded like vocal geniuses with great guitar virtuosity than this. At least half of Kid A was listenable. What a drop in standards. I think I'd rather hear...
The Village People. At least there was a lot of comedy associated with this (The US Navy ejected "In The Navy" because of those gay undertones... In The Navy, your turn in the barrel, in the navy, what a lovely funnel, in the navy, love your propeller, in the navy, we can be your fellers...) I think they were the word but I may be wrong)... but still these pop disco classics have people entertained... still, it makes me cringe.
(Apologies to gay people and pro gay people - just my take on this act and this song, frankly I could careless about anyone's sexual orientation). So I shan't mention Abba's Ring Ring in case of double offence. ;)
A hated song by a favourite band. Black Sabbath do Elton John. Only worse. Was his daughter better on her version of Changes or not? Only liked two Ozzy / Ozzy era Sab ballads (Solitude and Planet Caravan) and the first (but not the last sap I'd hear from this fabled band of electric troubadours). The last was the over produced whineathon (like my post) She's Gone. At least that has the benefit of the classic riff Dirty Women after it.
Durham Town - Roger Whitaker. Oh what a hideous upbringing. Child hood as well. Songs of Wigan Pier and all - the contents of my old man's old tape collection.
Another horrible MOR song I love to satirize. Hard core Middle of the Road band The Bellamy Brothers (we are sinking low and obscure) and "Let The Drugs Flow - (In Your Bloodstream). Oops I meant Let Your Love Flow Like a Mountain Stream.
Proud Mary - CCR. Ruined by fan teachers at school. And if I heard it once I would never want to hear it again. Kicker, was in one band many years ago where the others insisted on covering this. I was enthusiastic about that until they realized I meant six feet under. This is why musos do drugs.
Moonshadow - Yusuf Islam.
After the opening number which is great) the rest of the Also Sprach Zarathustra suite by Richard Strauss. Not one of his immortal symphonies but whiny dated violin wittering. I was so disappointed.
Only part of a song but my least favourite Floydian moment. A Spanish Piece from More. The loud eating and talking... No. Not good. Almost(?) as bad as the vomiting by Roy Harper at the end of the otherwise excellent Jugula album.
The Long And Whining Road - The Beatles. Tortured with the string version.
Your Own Special Way - the otherwise superlative Genesis. Mike and his Mechanics did another like it... memory serves me well, I've forgotten the title. Brilliant.
Why should even the great ELP get off scot free. They don't. Any of Greg Lake's numbers on Works still make me feel blood draining from my face as the ol' physiognomy strives to match the pallor of his and Sinfield's endeavours. One song, and it's not on this album. I Believe In Father Christmas may be the best Christmas song of all time (along with Slade's) but it still has an automatic gag reflex (nearly like Slade's - due to the repetiton). Mind you I do like (or don't mind) Snoopy's Christmas so what do I know?
Circus Of Heaven - Yes. Just for the kid. No no lions, ha, ha, unhappy kiddo? Good, that makes two of us. Equality.
We Are The World by a cast of 100s. Shudder, horror, puke.
Lionel Richie - Hello. Exacerbated by the appallingly bad taste video. But this loathsome ballad has horrors nameless for all it's near 140 minute length.
I think it's safe to say camp, whiny, sentimental, emotionally manipulative , shallow, exploitative MOR usually has me pleading to hear the Sex Pistols' unique approach to melody and performance art ... or Leo Sayer's Greatest Hits. "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" (hahahahahaha).
Fun topic. I can indulge several favourite emotions. Derision, hatred, contempt.

Out of curiosity, have you heard Iggy Pop's original recording of "China Girl"? (He and Bowie co-wrote it, and Pop recorded it about 6 years before Bowie.)

When I saw this thread I instantly thought of "Thong Song" by Sisqó. Such a ubiquitous summer song back in 2000, not sure what Sisqó is up to now, perhaps wandering the streets of Minneapolis in a thong...
Some really painful stuff came out around the Millennium, aka the height of "boybands" and nu-metal among other dreck.
"Summer Girls" by LFO may even be a worse summer song...some of the most terrible lyrics ever written by any man or creature throughout history.

Wham - Careless Whisper Scorpions - Still Loving You Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street
I hate, I HATE, I DO HATE these songs since my youngest age: it's like having your dentist telling you have beautiful eyes, nice hair and a fresh breath while piercing your teeth's roots, messing with your gums and sitting on your lap no matter what you say on such a rather unconventional behaving from a medic. Gosh.

Nickelback - Rock Star -- among the worst lyrics ever written
Simply Red - Holding Back the Years
Wang Chung - Everybody Have Fun Tonight
Olivia Newton John - Physical
Phil Collins - Sussudio (so, so awful!)
Lionel Ritchie - Dancing on the Ceiling (all others I've heard from him nearly as bad)
Tina Turner - Private Dancer (worst use of her voice I've heard)
Cher - Believe
Glory of Love - Peter Cetera
Aerosmith - I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing
And many more already mentioned
I'm not aware of prog songs that can 'measure up' so poorly to these.
------------- More heavy prog, please!

Uuhh yeah that Cher tune is ridiculously bad. Interrogation material. By the 5th repeat you're bound to squeal. Say something...ANYthing to be free of the horror. I also blame this "song" for today's use of the autotune - it is especially bad in modern hip hop. Yikes!

Bonnie Tyler - Total eclipse of the heart . Bon Jovi - Living on a prayer
There's of course a bunch of others, but one song I come to think of is a song that's probably called "I won't back down" because that phrase is repeated. It might be Gary Moore. It just goes round and round, has no dynamics and is extremely boring. I haven't heard it for a long time thankfully, buit that's just an example of a type of rock/pop song which is very simplistic and gives a bad and depressing feeling.
Sting - Every breath you take. This song has emerged as a hate-song, because it constantly shows up, it seems like a hear it every other month. And like the previous song I mentioned it is very simplistic in a way that causes a very bad feeling. That middle section is also meaningless, just too dramatic, contrived and meaningless.
Celine Dion - My heart will go on This was the number one hated song for me, but I haven't heard it for like 10 years which is a relief.
There's thousands more, but I have a problem with different "classics" as they may be called. My nearest grocery store plays a radio on with a lot of "classic" crap, so I try to avoid that store.

Because of the following dialogue from a Family Guy episode:
Michael: Hey Meg, I got you something for our 3 week anniversary. Meg: WOW, a Maroon 5 CD! Michael: Yeah, I remember how you told me you like terrible music, so I thought you might appreciate it.
I now refer to Maroon5, John Mayer, Train, matchbox twenty, the Fray, the Script and similar artists under the genre of Terrible Music. (This is distinct from Sh*tty Music, which includes Nickelback and their imitators and proteges.)

As far as I know, Steve Miller never played the song. Yet the myth persists. Perhaps because so many people dislike Steve Miller.

Well, I dislike power ballads - except Metallica's "Nothing Else Matters" and, er... Scorpions' "Under the Same Sun" (and I can tolerate "Winds of Change"). I don't shoot on the same targets everyday.
I have a huger hate for French singer Mylene Farmer's hit single: "Génération Désenchantée" ("Disenchanted Generation") which was N°1 in France for nearly three (3) months in 1991. Couldn't bear to see the video as N°1 on the Top 50 after the first month. So, three months...
If anyone wants me to turn into a berserker killing people with a table, a sitting chair or even a pile of newspapers, you just need to play the first chords or to hum the chorus of this ing of song.
