Subject: Prog songs for weddings?

My wife and I just celebrated our anniversary in july and were
reminiscing about the music we used. Has anyone else used prog in their
wedding? We danced our wedding dance to Onward and the reception CD's I
burned were 75% prog (Closer to Believing, Nights in White Satin,
Strawbs' So close and yet so far away, etc...)
Hope I'm not repeating a thread....

I never really thought of a wedding, however I have made it known that at my funeral I want Rush's Hemepheres and Dream Theater's Scene's from a memory played.

we married traditionally, to the sound of "Treulich geführt" ("Here
comes the bride") by Richard Wagner. but then we wanted it very
traditional. imagine the two of us in white bridal gowns, with floral
wreaths on our bald heads

I was the pianist on one of my friends reception, and I played some Flower Kings, Kayak and Camel on the grand piano, but that was the reception afterwards. For the official moment I still would go for Mendelssohn's classic tune, you know, the very famous one, of another classic tune. But that's me. I chose Mendelssohn myself at my own wedding. So the traditional approach as well.

Hehe, make them listen to all 78 minutes of it! After Hemispheres of course, good choices.
I'd choose King Crimson's "Starless", mainly because i see it as one of prog's crowning achievements.

If I had the chance to get married again (to the same
woman, of course), I'd use New Horizons by the
Moody Blues for the ol' First Dance.
I used God Only Knows by the Beach Boys, a
decision I don't regret.

that's a good song. I don't think i want a wedding where music would be played.

My friend's parents had ELP's version of Prominade played at their wedding.

I think Hair Pie: Bake 1 By Captain Beefheart is a great choice

No prog in wedding, but 'Shine on you crazy diamond' was on in the car as we left the ceremony.
Prog is not really known for its 'romantic' tendencies. How about VDGG 'Killer' at a wedding eh?

you are always talking about married life, spice up the conversation
My ex-girlfriend wanted Lady In Black from Uriah Heep at her wedding, but I guess she wanted to stay single at all costs (my song would be Punch & Judy from Marillion)
slip her these pills and I'll be free

Your ex-girlfriend has a excellent soul and taste. "Lady in Black" is rigt song for wedding.I recommend "Diamond ring" Jon Bon Jovi. Of course Bon Jovi isn,t prog., but the song is. Unpluged, only acoustic guitars.

I've always thought King Crimson's Islands would be lovely ... sure, it'd be ironic because the lyrics seem to me to be about isolation, but the music is just so gorgeous ... everytime I listen to it, it takes me back to the 30's. (Not that I lived then. Just all the movies and stuff I've seen from that period seems to have similar music. I think it's the muted trumpet... oh well it's gorgeous so whoever I marry had better tolerate my having that song as a first, or else it's Bridezilla time.)

Nobody's mentioned And You And I yet? Shocking!
Oh, and while we're at it, the best funeral song ever would be The Spirit Carries On!

I considered that one too ... that's a well-known love song, isn't it? But it changes tempo too often - there are slow bits then faster bits. It's not danceable-to. Gorgeous, but not danceable.

I think we should make a thread about music to die to. These here archives don't have enough morbidity in 'em ...

As most pairs are divorced after a while, I'd recommend Gentle Giant's Free Hand or On Reflection.

when i got married five years ago, a good friend of
mine, who is a gifted keyboard player, composed a
piece of music which he also transcribed to be given
to our local church's organist. he inserted the main
theme of ABWH's "brother of mine" ("so giving all the
love you have...") into the middle section. that was
sweet.
the funny bit though was, when the organist read
over the sheet music, his comment was "i' can't play
this – it was probably written on an electronic
keyboard and the notation on the organ is 'slightly'
different." or something to that effect. he copied it to
the correct key and, yes, it was played during the
ceremony. what a hero!

How about Peter Gabriel's Home sweet home?
This way people would know what expects them after the BIG step...
(I'm a little bit touchy about the subject since I split up recently...)
Seriously: at my wedding we stuck to the traditional stuff, but the friend of mine who shot the movie (my fellow drummer, btw) added some interesting tracks to the soundtrack (I now remember Leo by Cusco and Mother Nature's Son by the Beatles...weird, eh?)

Though at the off time I managed to slip through some Bill Bruford and Yes.

The simplest choice : "Lavender" by Marillion. For me best love song ever written. And has a simple tune so the nonproggers would like it. It's even danceable.
It would be wicked thing to play "La Rossa" from VDGG Still Life on church organ

First, it's a very strange thing about the subject... A very social time like a wedding in where everything is "normal-people-like" and good manners and stuff, and a kind music that is, let's say, not really accesible and sometimes anti-social, just do not mix.
But anyway, there must be something in prog that can fit as a background for a wedding (because prog's so great that it can be a background for everything), but it depends on the point of view.
* If i was just invited: Of course i would be bored to death, or having a good time thinking how weird this is... Maybe Zappa, Mr. Bungle, Seth, Ephel Duath or Magma
* If i was the groom: First, i hope that never happen... but i would choose something that would make me think a lot (Pink Floyd, Grobschnitt, Klaus Schulze, Harmonia)... Or if i just want to be littlew more "classy" with my father-in-law, i would choose Mike Oldfield, Vangelis, or some classical-driven pieces by ELP.

I'm getting married in November. My girl & I are choosing songs for a souvenir CD. Her tastes are love songs... of course. Fortunately, they are nice. But I'm a proghead and fusion player, so it's kinda hard for me to choose. However, I think I've come to some choices:
Yes - Turn Of The Century -- This one is a must for me. Beautiful piece, telling the story of Pygmalion. I think this is the closest to a love story and it's just gorgeous.
Cocteau Twins - Crushed -- Nice 4AD ambient song, beautiful guitar work and vocals.
Jon & Vangelis - Italian Song -- This is just a totally beautiful song. Even if it's in Italian phonetics, there is an "O Mi Amore" part in the middle, just gorgeous. Those CS-80 strings are wonderful.
Michael Hedges - The Happy Couple -- Beautiful guitar solo.
and for a 5th song... well, I wanted to include something from jazz fusion... but neither McLaughlin or Holdsworth have anything quite fitting... some of their stuff come close to but not quite... I was going to take "Electric Dreams, Electric Sighs" as the intro is just so emotional; but then it takes off too wildly... great piece but hmm not too fitting I think... Also "Joshua" from Holdsworth's "Secrets" album, but again hmm.. not too sure.
However, I'm deciding on Pat Metheny's "Mas Allá (Beyond)" from First Circle, or "Change Of Heart" from Question And Answer; also options could be "Map Of The World", "Au Lait" from Offramp (although it's too french sensual... oh well), or even "It's For You", "Praise" or "If I Could". Metheny has several beautiful pieces, I should make a decision soon...
just my two cents

This song didn't strike me particularly the first time I heard it, neither did my impressions on it grow since then.
I did not pay ANY attention to the lyrics neither, but it seemed to me that they had nothing to do with italian...
I must re-listen to it, but from what you wrote I'm afraid they threw in a bunch of meaningless neolatin-sounding vocals...

About Italian Song, it's actually all the opposite to me. I absolutely love that piece. Even if it's meaningless Italian phonetics. The first time I listened to it was from the Best Of compilation. My friend and I, both strong 70s progheads, were just taken away with this song.
I'm happy to know that it was actually performed live in 1991, during the Vangelis Eureka concert in Rotterdam, together with Jon Anderson.
