I am fairly new to prog, with only about a dozen albums.  A friend reccommended that I get music by Gentle Giant and Rennaissance. What should be my first album for these bands?

Gentle Giant: Octopus

Renassiance: Scheherazade and Other Stories.

Why? Just because. Those are the best ones.

For Renaissance try Ashes are Burning or Turn of the cards. Ashes reminds me

of early Wish Bone Ash in folk style. For GG a great place to start is the new DVD.

The live stuff is thought by many to capture the essence of the band. The recommendations

I've seen are pretty sound and Octopus or Freehand are good places to start. You might

like to consider the first album.

Gentle Giant:  I'd begi with Free Hand, its their most accessible but does not sacrifice any of their complexity

Renaissance:  I'd begin with Ashes are Burning, their best IMO
