I sure love my family.

A semi-early band on the prog scene, Family's a pretty interesting group, especially in their early days. Thoughts?

Hey, who shot the goat? Yet another band who would have done much better if they only did instrumental tunes.

The vibrato does become, eh, extreme at times.

Chappie sure had an interesting voice, and I agree that the band would probably be more well-known if he had toned down his caterwauling....but then they wouldn't have been Family.

So that's their gimmick then?

Hi,

NP: "Good News Bad News" - 8:06 (from "Anyway")

And after that Chappo's solo album "Hyenas Only Laugh for Fun" ...

Wouldn't call Chappie's voice Family's schtick, but I will say that Chapman had such an original voice that it came to define the band in some circles.  To me, Family without Chapman isn't Family, just like Yes without Jon isn't Yes.

IMHO the first album is a must for anyone who appreciates good quirky proto prog- psych rock.
The later ones have some nice tracks here and there but never recaptured the magic of Dolls House.

It became a different band altogether. But the Streetwalkers stuff and Chappo's solo albums are all very good and enjoyable, and not just a flimsy song here and that that we consider "prog" because it is weird, and not necessarily anything else. None of that material showed Chappo's ability to belt it out with the best of them.

To me, Family starts with "Good News, Bad News" and that rock punch they used to excellent effect in many of their albums and continuing with Streetwalkers.
