Jon Anderson & Roine Stolt team up for ‘The Invention Of Knowledge’
Anderson / Stolt, the brand new duo of legendary Yes vocalist &
singer/songwriter Jon Anderson and progressive rock veteran Roine Stolt
(The Flower Kings, Transatlantic), have announced the release of their
collaborative album ‘The Invention Of Knowledge’ for 24th June 2016 via
InsideOut Music. Jon Anderson had this to say: “.....Music is always
the driving force in my life...working with such a wonderful musician
as Roine Stolt made the creation of this album very unique,we are very
excited with the release of 'Invention of Knowledge'.“ Roine Stolt
adds: “It is not aiming at being new Yes music; just new music, modern
and classical, rock and ethno, tribal and orchestrated, grooving and
floating. Hopefully in the true spirit of “progressive” - leaning
forward, surprising and also comforting with familiar run-arounds.
We’ve been “inventing” as we go along - Jon is an endless source of new
ideas. We’ve been bouncing ideas back and forth for months and as a
result there are probably dozens of versions of these songs. It’s been a
very interesting and rewarding time and the result is just insanely
detailed.” InsideOut label-head Thomas Waber comments: “I have been
talking to Jon for ages about making an album of ‘Yes music’ – as Jon
calls it - and Roine seemed like the perfect guy for him to work with. I
am really happy that it has finally happened and I am also thrilled
with the material they have come up with. I think it will please a lot
of fans!” The idea came to life swiftly off the back of a
performance from Roine’s band Transatlantic, and Jon Anderson on the
Progressive Nation At Sea Cruise in 2014, and was initially instigated
by InsideOut Music label boss Thomas Waber. The duo set about crafting
new music in the spirit of early epic works such as ‘Tales From
Topographic Oceans’, ‘Awaken’ & ‘Olias Of Sunhillow’, but giving it a
modern twist. Written & recorded over the course of 1 and a
half years, the tracks have been in a state of constant change as Roine
and Jon swapped & refined ideas by sending tracks to each other via
the internet. In March 2015, an ensemble was put together by Roine to
realise the music live in the studio. Joining him there was Tom Brislin
(who played on the Yes Symphonic tour) & Lalle Larsson on keys,
Jonas Reingold & Michael Stolt on bass and Felix Lehrmann on drums.
The sessions were also bolstered by appearances from Daniel Gildenlöw,
Nad Sylvan, Anja Obermayer, Maria Rerych and Kristina Westas who all
provided backing vocals. The full track-listing for the album is as follows: • Knowing 17:45 • Everybody Heals 13:20 • Invention Of Knowledge 23:10 • Know 11.20 Keep an eye out for more news in the coming weeks! Let's just hope he doesn't dilute his creativity with so many projects at the same time. Through the 80's and 90's and he had been having trouble getting good songs for just a Yes album every few years (and in 00's not even that).

I probably shouldn't have high hopes for this, but I do. This collaboration, with the stated goals of making progressive music in the spirit of long-form Yes compositions, is at least aiming toward the goals I would like to hear.
Pairing the two of them might just refocus each musician away from the wrong turns they have taken in recent years. Jon Anderson's lyrics became less poetic and more preachy and pop-oriented since the 80's. Roine Stolt in his work with both Agents of Mercy and the Flower Kings has become more negative and gloomy, moods which do not make the best use of his talent, however serious the sentiments might be.
Here's hoping that we get an album which is spiritual, positive, and most of all, filled with music to delight the ear and mind!

Such a perfect pairing these two, I bet Stolt was rapt at getting to collaborate with one of his idols.
I have a question though - Do anyone know if Roine be singing on it at all, or will he just be providing a lot of the instrumentation and letting Jon take the vocals?

It appears Amazon and iTunes conflated the main and the sub-tracks. Here's how the songs play out...
Invention of Knowledge (22:52) 1. Pt I. Invention (09:41) 2. Pt II. We Are Truth (06:41) 3. Pt III. Knowledge (06:30) Knowing (17:48) 4. Pt I. Knowing (10:31) 5. Pt II. Chase and Harmony (07:17) Everybody Heals (13:09) 6. Pt I. Everybody Heals (07:36) 7. Pt II. Better by Far (02:03) 8.Pt III. Golden Light (03:30) 9. Know… (11:13) Total running time: 65:04

I do not have it yet, as the release date is 24 June. However, the spiritual leanings of both protagonists is so well known as to not require any repetition here. Thus a title such as this, and the beliefs I anticipate being included, come as no surprise whatsoever, and will be welcomed by me.

Heard a track on Planet Rock the other day. Its a bit ploddy if I'm honest but it does sound like seventies Yes so I suspect I will end up buying it. However it will be a pity if it distracts away from what is an impressive year so far with the likes of Haken ,Headspace and Frost* kicking some serious proggy arse.

I love both guys work, immensely ! But I have the same huge appreciation for Hackett and Squire and suffered a somewhat deception with Squackett. So this time I'm holding my expectations low and waiting calmly to hear what comes out (it's only 2 weeks away, right?) Does anybody know if it will be available on bandcamp ? (or for what matters anywhere for download buy)

It is incredibly rare for me to buy before hearing, but a low listing price on amazon and the attractive cover art sold me :)

I enjoy the Squackett one as well. As long as one does not go in to it expecting a combination of classic Genesis and Yes it can be a very enjoyable listen.

60 Ratings so far, and the album is showing a very healthy 4.16/5.0 rating !
UNfortunately, we have no way of seeing how the album is doing in relation to the other Top Prog Releases of 2016 because the administrators have decided that the album doesn't belong in any Prog Sub-Genre, but as "Prog-Related" along with all the other Jon Anderson solo albums.
Is this really a Jon Anderson solo album ? I haven't even listened to the whole thing yet, but it seems to me that Roine Stolt was responsible for most of the production and close to half of the writing and instrumentation of the whole album.
Anderson/Stolt should have their own listing as far as I'm concerned....and while we're at it, the fact that Jon Anderson (solo) is listed as Prog-Related seems also pretty strange. It means that Jon /Solo is considered the same "genre" as Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, David Bowie, and Led Zeppelin !
Posted By: Logan
Date Posted: July 15 2016 at 09:51
I haven't found the evidence that it was an administrative decision on the part of the Stolt/Anderson release. Anyone can add albums to an existent entry, and it was not added by a collaborator. Adding artists/bands is done by Special Collaborators and requires suggesting to the appropriate team and then for the project to be approved by a team. I see that a suggestion thread was made (but before the release so I don't think it could have been evaluated then as a team must hear the music to evaluate). We'll see how that goes now. Hopefully sufficient music is readily available for evaluation (say streaming off their webpage or on youtube).
As for the Jon Anderson entry, that placement is a very old one, and I think that entry may have been moved from the old Art Rock category, but I don't know (I don't know his music that well, though I have heard Olias and saw him perform with Kitaro). Speaking of David Bowie, he has music that I consider Crossover prog worthy, but opinions differ. I think he's well suited to Prog Related over all.

The entry for the album is incorrect, regardless of the sub-genre.
It is a dual effort between Jon and Roine, not a solo album.

Absolutely obsessed with this album. It's actually almost the only thing I've listened to over the last seven days.
