Okay, here is my dilemma. I'm in the middle of an argument over at dreamtheaterforums.org about MPs vocals in the song A Nightmare to Remember. During the "day after day" part, he's singing with harsh vocals. At the end when he does the "HUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" part, I'm arguing that it's a growl, but I'm being told it's anything but a growl. I think there are different kinds of growling vocals. I want some opinions here because if it's not a growl then what the hell is it? Yes, it's a stupid argument to have but there was a reason why it came into play. -------------

You're right, there are different kinds of growls. There can be higher pitched ones as heard in Death and low guttural ones like in a band like Nile. However, the vocals in the DT song really aren't growls, they are just harsh vocals. Portnoy's vocals in that song I would probably compare to a band like Pantera, so gruff but not a growl. Here's examples of growls: There are also snarls, as heard in black metal: Hope this gives you a good idea of growl vocals.

Thanks for the input. Well my main question was regarding the "sound" he makes after he sings, not actually the lyrics themselves. Do you to what I am referring? -------------

Finally saw the 'Theater on Paladia the other month and, after all the hoopla beforehand, was rather under impressed. Great, great musicianship thrown away by one mediocre singer. That guy belongs in a metal band, really. I assume you saw that Breaking Walls or something like that.....They only show a portion of that DVD. If you can find the DT Score 20th Anniversary DVD, that is pretty good. They used to show that one on Paladia couple years ago. -------------

I remember reading years ago, on the Mike Portnoy forums, that Mike recorded multiple takes of that line, one of the times was an actual death metal growl, deep and guttural. He posted the clips on the forum thread. There was another one was a very gritty Portnoy vocal, less aggressive than what made it to the album.
