Same. I'm not as excited by the prospect of a new Star Wars film as I would have been if Lucas hadn't milked the franchise with the disappointing prequel trilogy. This, coupled with the fact that The Force Awakens is only the first part of yet another trilogy, (and the proposed three other franchised spin-off films in the offing) has reduced a much-loved gung-ho space opera to nothing more than an extended soap opera that without the Star Wars tag would probably have gone "straight to video". The leaked trailer for next year's Star Trek looks more like a more promising Star Wars clone/sequel than anything Lucas is making, but alas that means it's lost the 'Roddenberry' magic that made Star Trek not Star Wars. Still, I'll be parting with a sizeable chunk of hard-earned dosh this christmas to treat the whole family to a trip to the cinema so I can immerse myself in what will hopefully be 2 hours of light-sabre rattling escapism. ------------- What? |

As a huge Star Wars fan I'm also apprehensive about it-- firstly, having sold all his rights to Disney, Lucas has nothing do with this film despite the nominal "Lucasfilm" seal and ILM doing the effects. Second, I agree it's in danger of becoming a diluted serial though that is exactly what Lucas wanted from day one: an old-fashioned Cliffhanger with all the ridiculous, endless twists and plotting. Third, and what really concerns me, is that the trailers don't... well... feel like Star Wars. It's not enough to dress everyone up as nomads and robots and get the plot continuity right. What made the movies special was the atmosphere Lucas was able to achieve, cheesy as it may've been sometimes. *none* though it seems the new Star Wars movie is getting great word of mouth reviews... perhaps we'll go see it next month. yeah. Definitely waiting for the crowds as much as hearing the word of mouth on the movie. One couldn't really skip the prequels if one grew up, as most of did with those original three movies. These though, completely optional. I could easily miss them and not miss a thing if it came to it. I figured the F/X would be killer.. I wanted to see if the movie itself was any good. well well well went to go see Force Awakens yesterday and though I had a few minor quibbles (another droid carrying secret plans on a desert planet and seemed pretty much a complete plot recyle of the 1st, and some continuity questions from the where the last left off) MORE MORE MORE than offset by the best film since Empire Strikes Back. Characters you feel attached to, not just the old favorites but especially the new ones. A major weakness of the prequel whose characters were often annoying at best and unlikeable at worst. Along with some fabulous acting (especially that young female lead), and stunning visuals. I agree - a damn good romp and thoroughly enjoyable if you just let it flow over you. We saw it in 3D, which I found to be a distraction if truth be told - when you notice the effects it means you're no longer immersed in the story. The plot-recycling (which was rife) annoyed a little - homages are fine if handled well and these weren't but that's a minor grumble that I'll not dwell on [spoilers] . ------------- What? |

I've seen Star Wars :Force Awakens twice now....family obligations with the grandkids.....and it was a decent addition to the franchise. If I live long enough I hope to see the next one in May 2017. ------------- One does nothing yet nothing is left undone. Haquin |

I quite liked the new Star Wars despite a few gripes. Don't expect to like Sisters as much if I see it (as much as I enjoy Amy's work on Parks and Rec). Alvin and the Chipmunks, on the other hand, is too good to even be considered in the same art form. It is the holy word of God and I won't stand for it being unfairly compared to two mere films. |

really? It WAS Star Wars, though with a less classic less convincing villain (really an..EMO-Vadar) but perhaps better overall good guys. | I caught "Force Awakens" on Friday. As the crop of recent releases go this is a good movie and I recommend it be seen. For those of us who were around when things got started ("A New Hope", 1977) that go see recommendation comes with a dose of ho-hum. Not meant to be a spoiler but there's really nothing new here. |

Yes, with the "Whoo-hoo!" that is now required for any cathartic moment in movies. By "not Star Wars" I mean that it is like being in a different galaxy, one much more close to home. But what made SW special was its exotic and quirky nature that set it apart from the clean, antiseptic visions of space life in 2001, Star Trek, or Logan's Run. Plus SW takes place in the distant past, not the future. These were major breakthroughs for sci-fi storytelling. I remember seeing the trailers for Episode 4 in 1977 and thinking 'Wow!-- finally someone has done something different in sci-fi/fantasy. And real ' ; Things were rusty, falling apart, covered in grime. You could smell Star Wars. And as a car enthusiast, that is exactly what Lucas wanted (he was going to be a mechanic if filmmaking didn't work out). That whole mentality and style is gone and I don't see it returning unless the next one is made by someone who truly loves and understands the SW universe. You can't just throw some familiar costumes and actors and voices around, slap the SW logo on, and think no one will notice. The public at large love this new one, but the hardcore fans smell something rotten.
