Subject: The Ultimate PA Album List- 2015/16 Revival!

In 2007 and 2008, moreitsythanyou created and ran a fun exercise of sorts called the Ultimate PA Album List, as seen pinned to the top of this subforum, where users posted lists of their favourite albums of all time and he compiled them into an overall list, representing the forum's favourite albums- like an alternative to the sometimes criticised main PA list, but one that represents the current tastes of the forum, and is open to all genres. Seeing as it's been seven years since the last one, and we've seen lots of new albums, new members (myself included), and changing tastes, I'd like to bring it back this year!

So, have a bit of fun and try to make a ranked list of your favourite albums, with these few guidelines:

- Minimum 50 albums (but please list more!!), maximum 200
- Only studio LPs (no live albums, EPs or compilations)
- Can be in any genre (including non-prog!)
- Include all albums, not one album per band

And post it here. The final deadline is before January 25 2016, and I'll compile the lists and post the resulting best-of list within a week or so of that, with a countdown and all that jazz.

- If you find making these kind of lists hard because your list would change daily, or because 50 is too many, here's an idea: make an off-the-cuff list of any length once a week or day or whatever, post it here each time, and at the end I'll compile each of your lists to give you your personal top albums list for the two months, which I can then enter into the main thing. (If you're doing this, say so in your posts.)

- While the minimum is 50 albums, please list as many as you can, because the longer and more diverse the lists the more interesting the end result will be.

- Feel free to edit your lists after the fact; I won't do anything with them until near the end date.

- On classical music. This is about favourite albums, not favourite music- however I wouldn't list classical album releases, seeing as they're usually effectively compilations of different works and different composers that don't necessarily have any place being together. Instead, to get something closer to the non-classical entries of LP length, I'd suggest only listing individual works of 30+ mins, and not specifying the conductor and performing artist (else the other people who pick the same work are likely to choose a different recording, and none of them will get anywhere). Maybe just base your ranking on your favourite interpretation of the work.

Do we have to put them all in numerical order? That's gonna drive me nuts, even more so considering non-prog stuff is included. I'll come up with 200 later on but I really don't want to figure out which I like more than others.

Listing top..,say 100 in numerical order wud be very difficult in the first place...and even if i do..i wud b tempted to change orders every single time i login to the forums..which might continue till the very end (Whatever is the final date to submit and edit entries)..and i might still think..well...

There's no way I could say "this is my number 1 album in the entire history of forever". I could probably narrow it down a bit, but even then it's a struggle. So I'd have no clue about how to ranks nos. 2-50+. I've been through phases where one band/artist dominates my music-buying, usually for 2-3 years or so, and these tend to blend into each other. For example, I currently love Steven Wilson's music as much as I loved Dream Theater's music about 4-5 years ago, and as much as I loved Pink Floyd's music 8-9 years ago, but I'm not going to discount the earlier phases just like that.

The top 5 is easy as well as the bottom 5.....the other 90 rankings I have no clue how to do that.

Guys, you can take your time, and the further down your list you get, the less the ordering matters (because they contribute less points), so you can be increasingly general if you like.

And remember from the OP:

- If you find making these kind of lists hard because your list would change daily, or because 50 is too many, here's an idea: make an off-the-cuff list of any length once a week or day or whatever, post it here each time, and at the end I'll compile each of your lists to give you your personal top albums list for the two months, which I can then enter into the main thing.

Afraid so, else it doesn't work.

You could just list your favourites as you see them now, or you could find a compromise between that and your previous phases. My current list is kind of a compromise- for example I don't listen to the classic prog standards all that much any more (VdGG aside), but I still think they're fantastic albums, and so they're still scattered through my list fairly high up.

I will have a think about it though, but reaching just 50 will take a bit of work, as that is nearly a third of my 149-album collection as things stand. I'd like to contribute to what feels like a big thing on this forum.

I just decided my list will be Buckethead's entire discography.

Ha! No, I'm still working on my list (promise it will be ready by New Year's...maybe.)

200 is the max.
He has around 240.
You'll leave out Countdown To Halloween 12 and 27, right? Those were poor compared to the masterpieces that were 3 and 22.

Some more fun facts:

200 of those were released between 2013-2015.
The other 44 were released in a span of 20 years.
Between 1992-2001, he only released six.
The amount of music that he has released totals 132.46 hours.
He has 244 solo albums but has been on 425 albums all together.
Nobody has ever listened to every one of his releases. Not even himself.

To those who think numerical order cannot be done: I'll make a numerical order and if this is not "really true", orders some that "cannot be ordered" or totally different the next day, I just don't care. sh*t happens. Why are such things taken so damn seriously?

Why no lie albums? I have to leave out many of my favourites that way!

The ranking is in my opinion impossible; don't take it too seriously. The list could also be very different at another time. I will stop at 100.

I'll definitely post a list, but I have to report back later. There are three albums that I listened to for the first time(s) the past two days that got me through said days and I feel the ridiculous inclination to put them in the list. So I'm waiting until the inclinations subsides or I've listened to the albums enough times to at least make it 25% less ridiculous.

Yeah- the previous iterations of this tournament did include live albums. I chose not to include them, mainly because both most top albums lists made by actual publications, and also the PA top albums list, don't tend to include live albums, and because most people in the previous tournaments didn't include them in their own lists (probably because of that). I know when I think of my top albums, live albums don't even enter my head, because they're typically more about getting the feel of a live concert and interpreting studio material, rather than just presenting the material itself (cue exceptions). And if live albums are included, and not many people include them for the above reasons, they won't make it far anyway. Sorry- you've got a great list nonetheless.

That's good, it brings us variety, even if the top of the final list will inevitably be prog classics.

Haha, yeah. I felt a bit of the same thing when I ended up with four 2014 albums in my top 100... it was a good year in which I looked hard for new albums, and they're definitely good albums, but it does seem rather high when they're so new. And there are other albums, newish to me, that I've left off for now.

great list Daryl! Clap

I think there was a thread some months back in which a similar question was asked and I posted mine. Hopefully I can find it.  I'd hate to do that all over again and or I'll be booking a extended stay into a rubber room myself.

no live albums? pffff.. screw the OP then.  LOL I want live albums.. if it is worthy of making such lists then they are so much more than mere note for note versions of studio versions. They improve upon them.

That is what makes great live albums...great.

yeah..  I grabbed the list from a PA's search that actually worked.  I think I grabbed an early version of the list, I think someone had pointed out the duplication when I first posted it.  I suppose I'll bump it out to 200 and correct that.. but the live albums stay.

I might post 50 more which I think have a couple more similarities to your list. But I feel less confident about those fifty. Some of them are albums that I listened to a lot for a while but haven't heard in a long time (like many King Crimson albums) and others are maybe ones I should sit with a bit longer. I do a lot of exploratory listening and probably not enough delving into one artist or album which puts me in a weird situation when these lists come up.

Thanks for this thread by the way!
Making up the list is big fun and makes me listen to many great things again.
The list itself will still take a while...

By the way, reading somewhere else in this forum I thought the appreciation for classical music is strong here, but I don't see that much in the lists posted up to now. I wonder whether this is a proper reflection of people's taste, or whether they exclude classical for other reasons such as admiration rather for specific works than for albums (but the opening post states we can list works), or some people may just don't think it belongs here (I think it does).

I have a couple of dozen classical albums and another couple of dozen 20th century classical but none of them would crack my top 200. They get plenty of play.

Classical isn't an 'album' genre like jazz, pop or rock is anyway.

Yeah, include classical (preferably as per my suggestions) by all means, but basically this.

Regardless, I'm not sure that classical would feature as strongly you suggest, Lewian- while there's certainly a strong appreciation of classical music around these parts (it'd feature strongly on my list if I included it), for most people I don't think it compares at all to their appreciation of prog or other popular music, which isn't all that surprising on a prog rock site.

Yeah. I know some classical would make my list if it were an album genre, but with the wealth of different performances, you'd be lucky to have two of the same album mentioned. And with the new solution, there's the weird possibility that the 33rd greatest album of all time might be Wagner's Die Walküre. I'd hate to say no classical, but I think that's the best route to go, honestly.

That's what I was thinking as I read this list: "Man, there's a whole lot of southern rock on there!"

I want to adopt everyone else's list and take them all out to dinner. I've just been reminded about a lot of great albums.

I was just curious how strongly classical music would feature in such an exercise, but as things stand, that's not so clear because some don't include classical because it doesn't score high enough for them whereas some others don't include it for other reasons such as "it isn't an album genre". Well, so be it then, at the end of the day it's anyone's own decision.

If you read the OP again you'll realise that listing specific albums is discouraged but listing classical works (assuming the best interpretation you know) is fine.

Damn that was much harder than I thoughtOuch
....and all I've done is list 200 albums. There's definitely no order yet, and I am struggling to see how I'm ever going to pull that offLOL

So you now have written them down in some random order.
Make a new list on which you start with the first (random) album on your list, and then add further albums one by one, always putting them in "correct" order with those that are already there. This becomes harder the more albums are already there, granted, but I think it remains doable until you reach no. 200.
I know that some albums can just not really be compared and some of the decisions to make there are very hard, in which case you can do just something that feels about right.
Still this will produce a ranking that should be almost as good as it gets in manageable time.
Certainly it's better than looking at a list of 200 and waiting for an order to form in your head.
(Maybe this idea is trivial and nothing new for you and you're agonising about all the decisions that there still are to be made, but in any case it probably can't hurt to post this...)

Here are my top 250 albums per my ratings in progfreak.  Take them for what they are worth.  If I get time I will try and sort and rank and maybe add or eliminate but for now this is an alright place sitter.

That is out of 7400+ albums.  I'm bound to think that at least some of them are magnificent or stellar.  Otherwise what the heck am I doing listening to all of this music.

Thanks dad

Not really what I meant though...what I was getting at is that I simply don't have favourites among my favourite albums.
....and yes I wouldn't know how to compare albums like Liquid Swords, Out to Lunch and Forever Changes - 3 completely different albums that I happen to love just about equally. Gangsta rap vs avant jazz vs psych poprock.

There are of course some albums that I prefer over others, but we're talking less than 50. The problem then is ranking those buggers.
Either way, I promise to have finished my list before the deadline. In the end the order doesn't really matter all that much to me, as it changes on a daily basis.

ranking albums is difficult. I just looked back on the list I made a week ago and was astonished by the choices.  Blue Lines before The Yes Album?  What the hell was I thinking?

That really is so true.  I tend to rank individual albums as I listen to them.   So I might listen to an album and think that it is great and give it an 8 or 9.  But then I look at a list like my top 250 above and think how in the world can such and such an album be on this list...I like it...but it isn't one of my top 250 albums.  It just happened to get a higher ranking on the day that I assigned that ranking.  When you are basically dealing with 5 stars and only the really best and really worst get 5s or 1s it is really hard to differentiate between albums.  The 10 ranking is a little better, but really most things are either 7s, 8s, or 9s.  I try and differentiate levels of like by the decimals, but ranking so many albums makes it very difficult to result in some sort of accurate order without going back and changing things based on comparisons and other rankings....and I've really yet to do that other than maybe at year end when i am compiling my top 10 list for the current year.

I'm loving how all over the map most of these lists are, usually when you ask for a top 10 or 20 you get a vibe, you go out to top 200 and you see how diverse peoples tastes really are.

^Yeah I am loving the eclectic spirit of this thing.

Too bad about those live albums... Some bands are just faaaaar superior in a live setting.

Magma fx.....and The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, SBB, Kraan, Grobschnitt, Derek & the Dominoes, Allman Bros, Cream, Santana and so forth. Some of these artists aren't even featured on my list, because their studio releases weren't good enough. Allman Bros, Jimi and Grobschnitt most notably.

^Yeah, there were several live albums that I would have loved to include but couldn't; with PoS's 12:5, In the Woods.... Liveatthecaledonianhall and The Gathering's Sleepy Buildings being the most notable absenses, the first 2 might even have been top 10 for me.

Thanks, 10 years on this sight has certainly seen me exposed to an enormous variety of music and every one of those albums I listed I'd rate 4.5 or higher.

No live albums buddyWink (oh and why is Ummagumma listed twice? The cactus that often goes with it has finally made you loopyTongue)

Ummagumma is not a live album, it is a studio album, including tracks preformed in front of an audience, just like "Robert Palmers - Maby it is Live"

Even the most respected Progressive Site (something called ProgArchives) note :
Studio Album, released in 1969

Yup!

In other news, I've realised that I'm the only person so far to include Frances the Mute anywhere. The only one. All decent, moral people should be hurriedly making lists to amend this injustice.

No you're not.

Uh, it seems that after chucking about half the lists into Excel, I looked for the number of Frances entries there, forgetting that I hadn't actually entered all the current lists... right you are. My point still stands, lurking Volta fans.

Reading this and your other posts led me to go and track down the thread in question, which is justin4950834-2's thread http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=103359&PN=1" rel="nofollow - here . I was looking for any lists that might be applicable here, of which there's only a couple, since most of those are unranked- those by  http://www.allmusic.com/user/lists/54a2efd3e33c3ebe4f2f5649" rel="nofollow - justin4950834-2http://https://rateyourmusic.com/list/floflo79/my_top_50_albums_of_all_time" rel="nofollow - floflo79 , maybe miamiscot and iluvmarillion, would be good to add (and micky and rushfan4 have already reposted their lists here)- I'll probably just go ahead and add them, but do pipe up if you see this.

The Dark Elf and LearsFool also had some great unranked lists over there, it'd be great to see some lists in the future from you guys if you come past here!

After I had realised that I had forgotten an album and therefore it wasn't a proper "top 150" anymore, I decided to extend my list top 200 and make a few tiny corrections in the top 150 on the fly. This is meant to replace the previous list.

Okay. So as of the moment, we have 15 complete entries, plus 6 where the poster said they intended to add more, alter or sort it later. I'll probably send a gentle PM to those people, and those who said they'd like to make one but haven't yet, just to make sure they still want to follow through.

But apart from that, I would be a little disappointed with that number of entries, and would be happy to hold off the deadline for a while if people were to post here saying that they wanted to contribute, but needed more time. Please say so!

I would, but it's just too difficult for me to make an accurate list of my favorite albums of all time. Too many albums to choose from, I'll try to make a top 50, but I still might not be able to. Wacko

I would, but it's just too difficult for me to make an accurate list of my favorite albums of all time. Too many albums to choose from, I'll try to make a top 50, but I still might not be able to. Wacko

No album of Kylie Minogue will be in any of my lists, but thanks for the uplifting song LOL

I'll try it, I will need some time to write down 50 lines of text (or more).
Maybe you can extend the deadline?
