Here's a new series which I like to call "What Did it Get Right?", where I take disliked albums by bigger name prog bands and ask you exactly what the album got right. The first album, Roll The Bones (1991) by Rush:  The album currently has a 3.08 with 690 ratings and 63 reviews. 9% of reviewers/raters have given the album 5 stars. Personal Cons: This was sort of a turn for Rush, and by no means a good one. The album uses some funky elements, shown on the bouncy title track, but it ultimately falls flat on it's face with the use of rap. The whole experience seems too light for Rush standards, and misuses the playing of Rush for semi-heavy pop rock instead of what Rush is good at. Personal Pros: Some songs use the customary Rush "heaviness" to it's advantage, such as the opener 'Dreamline' and 'Bravado' by coinciding lighter and darker themes. That's pretty much it. Conclusion: More or less a grab bag filled with more rocks than gems. Find myself switching over to another album very quickly to get a better experience. I used to love this album when I was young and didn't know any better. Now I pretty much loathe it. I still love 'Dreamline' and I still like 'Where's My Thing' and 'Neurotica'. Beyond that, this is certainly my least favorite Rush album next to Hold Your Fire. I'm off now to kick some gluteus max and get dizzy with the facts.

I didn't think this album was terrible when it came out (yeah, the rap was ludicrously bad, but oh well), but it subsequently got way overshadowed by Counterparts. Dreamline is still a killer, and a great concert opener. Bravado is terrific. The instrumental is very good. I'd have to go back and listen to the album to even remember what else I liked. |

This...also the album cover is very good. A kid just kicking a skull down the street, nonchalantly like "this is a cool kickball.." -------------
