Quite a silly question, really........ But, if you're not familiar...... Any early FLOYD, Hawkwind, Ozrics...... VDGG - Pawn Hearts CARAVAN - early albums NEKTAR - any early-70's release Gong........... come to think of it - most Prog.......... Try some Zeuhl, but I found it too oppresive and dark.

It depends on how to define "best". Assuming you're into that kind of... recreation, it would probably be best to listen to music you actually enjoy. If you high as a kite listening to something you don't like, you're likely just listening to the music out of obligation.

Not wishing to ignore this fascinating dialogue on which type of prickiness one prefers from dear Micky, but I think that the "best albums to listen to high" all depends on what type of buzz one is on and which way one would like to take the buzz.
Low Spark of High Heeled Boys or early Moody Blues albums like DoFP or In Search of the Lost Chord are great albums if one wishes to remain mellow. Floyd albums like Meddle or Dark Side of the Moon are more for the cerebral buzz, but not conducive to the giggles that occur from mescaline. Sabbath was for T buzzes that caused one to sink into a couch and become one with the cushions.
Amusingly enough, I recall in the 70s that "When the Levee Breaks" always played at 3 or 4 in the morning and really was appropriate for that pre-dawn crash...usually the last thing one remembers before waking on someone's lawn when the sprinklers went of.

However, I must say that I do not have any problem with peeps i.e. smoking weed, it smells good to me, I really won't smoke it because I simply don't like it or what it does to me

Sitting on the couch listening to a great album reading a book... beautiful night so had the balcony sliding doors upon.. and before too long... oh yes.. that sweet sweet smell comes wafting up from my neighbors balcony below.
Now I haven't smoked a joint in.. god.. 20 years.. 1995. Last act of soon to be married man before he settled down. However I'm all about a contact high ...one reason I love to hang out with 'hippie chick' at Prog Day so I stepped out and breathed deep the sweet air. Damn neighbors...
Now this would be a good album to listen to high!!

Try listening to the long track by Curved Air (off the 'Second' album) - Pice Of Mind. Pretty hectic - I'd swear that some wreltchy synth in the background of the manic bit before it mellows out sounded like a big cat roaring - l'll never forget that. Or Tony Banks' ARP solo in Slippermen with his portamento going. Ultra-trippy. Or the mellotron swells in Salmacis.

Yup, I'd even say most 60's & 70's music (not just prog) is excellent to be heard under Mary Jane's influence.
As for Zeuhl, I only find Magma's music oppressive (and even then, mostly only MDK)
===============
Not meaning to make an apology about marijuana, smoking weeds certainly opened my ears and mind when it came to music (and other activities of life). I'd hate to think about what kind of sickeningly straighto I'd be if I hadn't tried it three or four times before finally "feeling something" (and that first time was kind of brutal, but in such a lovely way).
However, living during the week in The Netherlands for the last 12 years were the stuff is legit , I find that I don't even get the urge to toke anymore. Last time I went toa coffee shop was probably two years ago. I guess I grew out of it.
Can't say that alcohol brings a plus for listening to music. Outside LSD (with its obvious psychotropic effects), I haven't tried other kinds of drugs enough to be definitive about the interest of listening to music while under the influence. Certainly, I don't find poppers interesting. Speeders (including coke) in general decrease the attention span and patience in general, so the few times I tried them, I must say it was inconclusive. TBH, I don't find speeders good for me.... or even good for the health (mental or physical)

Ok, if I can advocate the entertainment of marijuana influence to isten to music, or even create/compose music, persobally, all the experiences I've had in playing music under influences are very mised.
While it's interesting to jam (sometimes produces interesting ideas), it's relatively counterproductive to actually record music (especially complex music like prog) while very high (a light buzz is OK, though). All to often, the one muso that is high tends to think he was great, but generally the others are generally unimpressed (accuracy issues and stuff) by his performance. I mean sure plenty of albums were recorded under drugs influences, but I'm not sure they couldn't have pulled it off better if they had abstained from it during the actual recording stages. Doing it afterwards during production stages could be interesting again, because f the creative asoects of using the studio as an instrument

Just because I'm Canadian does not mean ill tolerate bullsh*t from anyone, especially you cornballs. And my realness speaks for itself. I might be vulgar but I stand by what I say. It opens a can of worms everywhere in life, it wouldn't be so bad if you and everyone else didn't have such distorted views about "drugs" you can't distinguish synthetic drugs from entheogens or stoners from junkies. Get out of your white-washed mentality and smell what's left of the roses, no wonder my generation has to fix your damn mistakes.
Dude, you're not having a good start here.
Tom is right. Back off Kati (or anyone else FTM, with the aggressive behaviour), or it's not going to happen long here for you.
As for being Canadian, I'm kind of surprised that two of them (both newbies that appear to have joined us just for this thread) are being aggressive about dope. Though both of you appear to ,be on opposite ends of the spectrum about use of psychtropics, it doesn't mean you can't be courteous.
I'm not sure how in recent years debates about ths issue went, but in the early years (ten years ago), they were heated as well, and threads were a regular occurence. sure things got heated, but if nausayers (it's their absolute right to be so) can't advocate it and discuss it intelligently, they should abstain from entering the debate. Apparently you're not a naysayer, so why get upset here??
Having lived almost 20 years in Canada (from age 10 to 29, during the 70's & 80's), that's where I personally got into drugs, and I had a bloody good time at it, and can only thank Canada for that excellent experience in general.

Yes. Kati is worth 10 of almost anyone else on this forum because she's unfailingly kind and polite.
I HATE drugs. I've seen the damage they do - they absolutely devastated a friend of mine - I've never taken them and never would. I have too much respect for my health. I don't even drink much any more; just a few pints of real ale every now and then.
If you know and accept the risks and decide to use, that's fine by me, so long as you don't drive under the influence. It's a free world. But don't be so rude as to criticise those who choose not to.
To answer the question: Hawkwind, early Floyd, Caravan and The Enid.

or what, you'll call the forum police on me. lol gtfoh
talking drugs on a forum always opens a can of worms. Keep it real, mahn. You're supposed to be 'chill', eh ??
Just because I'm Canadian does not mean ill tolerate bullsh*t from anyone, especially you cornballs. And my realness speaks for itself. I might be vulgar but I stand by what I say. It opens a can of worms everywhere in life, it wouldn't be so bad if you and everyone else didn't have such distorted views about "drugs" you can't distinguish synthetic drugs from entheogens or stoners from junkies. Get out of your white-washed mentality and smell what's left of the roses, no wonder my generation has to fix your damn mistakes.
I've always likes the Canadians I've met, but you seem like an exception: a very rude, arrogant young man.
I suspect you'll be attracting the attention of the moderators soon and I would not be unhappy if you were removed.
Grow up.

Exactly my point, They do effect other people badly. I know
personally but please this type of stuff is killing the buzz of the thread. 'I HATE
DRUGS', don't you hear yourself. Caffeine is a drug, tobacco is a drug,
We get our medicine from the DRUG store, you are all hypocrites. I get
you guys are older but we all have our roads to go through. I am only arrogant because you guys have set such a bad example for the children growing up in this dysfunctional society. I am not criticizing those that choose not too, big difference. I'm criticizing those that insist on promoting their sobriety to feel superior. Just because you smoke does not make you weak, just like being too fat or skinny.

another basic fact you've got wrong, is that as a stranger, initially you've got my respect (almost automatically), so you can only lose it. And you've done a pretty fast job of losing it (some five hours after after you've joined). Only Wallace (your friend maybe) has managed to do that quicker.
I bet you have no idea about recent cannabis debates because it is corrupted like everything in this fake world or else you would have a more profound outlook. At this point in society were not rebelling the system, we need to change it all together. Now we have Monsanto as the face of "marijuana legalization", but that is no where close to what the problem actually is. At least you guys got to live out your "hippie ages" because it's gone and overrated to us. Smoking herb does not stop your day unless you stop your day. Many use herb as a crutch to be lazy and act out the caricatures of being high. It's more psychological then a physical addiction like opiates. Don't lecture me about this or spread propaganda. Like we should keep it, can we stay on topic and not be judged or lectured and let the people that like listening to music while smoking herb talk about that. I'm not upset, I'm just pushing it because you guys get hurt so fast and you're unbelievable ignorance, if your gonna spew bullsh*t expect to be criticized.
If I spoke about no idea about how recent debates about drugs went, I meant this for ProgArchives' case, because until recently, I was mostly away for a couple of years from this forum, so I didn't follow what was said here.
I tend to agree with you when it comes to pot. It can only hurt you if you let it hurt you. I never had such good grades in as in Uni (overall average of 80% >> despite only having only 60% in Calculus >> damn Fourrier series and Laplace transformations), and I was a total smokehead at the time. We used to toke during our blocus time, studying for each term's exams... and man, that was much better than those sickly amphets others took just to stay awake. If you apply yourself while stoned, one can produce little wonders. So yeah, most naysayers have no idea of what they talk about, simply because they've never tried it.
BUT, that does not excuse your tone and temper. Apparently, you joined this ship only to partake this debate, most likely, you won't go much further IF you keep going in this direction

C'mon bud, you might be old but definitely not grown up. We all learn everyday. I know my sh*t stinks, but the stench is nothing to how bad this world smells. I wish I can live in ignorance but I refuse to lose hope. for now if no BS I can move on to other business.

Sean Trane should've eased Nickname's gripe, he appealed to both sides.
He gave his views and experience with weed (which I certainly do agree on the majority of it). While listening to music is a satisfying experience, writing/recording music under the influence is another story. It's an irritating process, because ideas come and go so quickly, that anything comprehensive just... doesn't come!
Good post Trane

For the clever folks on this thread - nice job derailing the topic from music suggestions to a drugs debate. You know who you are. Bravo Now, in-keeping with the topic, try Landberk or Dungen. Even though I listen to them with a clear mind, I wish they were around back in the day.

Yeah! You folks need to blow a few doobs and mellow out.
Humorously enough, all the albums that have been referred to, particularly the ones from the 60s and 70s, featured bands that were stoned out of their minds. Or drunk. Or both. At one time or another.
The immortal words of Jim Morrison bear repeating here:

On a fateful day in 1981, we had just gotten back from the record store and fixed a pot of tea and a big pan of Puerto Rican-style nachos.
As finishing the nachos, we decided to spin our latest purchase, "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts."
We couldn't believe what we were hearing. The next day we had to spin it again to verify that the album was as weird as it seemed. Indeed it was, and from that day on we understood the dangers of listening to freshly released groundbreaking music after tea and nachos.
