Hey. Being a big prog fan and a gay man has always been a bit of a weird clash. In fact It's a bit of a rarity as very few gay guys and girls I know really aren't into progressive music at all. Obviously crossover artists can be liked by everyone (for example my ex and I met over a love of the band Nightwish, a band who are even on this site and he even introduced me to Diablo Swing Orchestra). So...is prog a stereotypical heterosexual thing... Discuss :)

We actually have a few gay friends who are very much into prog, both as listeners and as musicians. Therefore, based on personal experience, I'd say the answer to your question is "no". |

Ok, guys, seriously. For homossexuals, every place we live is a place where we have to find an identity. Do not mock for the question. Every place is heterossexual and male dominated, and this question is something natural and valid. The fact that the answer will be "no", because Progressive Rock doesnt have a nature that defines who should listen to it (from every aspect of human life), do not necessarilly invalidate the question. Arcane, I do understand you. As a gay men myself, I always struggle to find some points of ourselves in Prog Rock. And now we have internet to better comunicate! Did you listen TAAB2? As for an actual response to the post: No, it's not only for any particular group. Music is music, and peoples' individual tastes are just that, their individual tastes. While I may find Ruins and such to be good, other people find them awful and would prefer to listen to anything else they prefer to listen to. Arcane want to see if there were other people though like him, what kind of things we could hear by this point of view (thats why I already indicate a song/album), etc. I do feel confortable here, and thats why I think you guys should be trying to find some songs and artists to link with the topic to made Arcane even more comfortable. Perhaps a special interest thread where one can find support.. suggestions.. anything from music to larger life issues. just a thought.. I'm sure the admins can help direct you to where to start one and make sure it is 'watched'. As far as gay prog fans go, or LGBT prog fans in general, I have never came across any sort of strong association, although it could just be ignorance on my part. Anecdotally, I am bi and I have always only sort of been into prog. Coincidence? |

same here.. though with pool cues.. not pleasant at all hah... speaking of which... I used to tend bar in a gay bar while in college. Best time of my life (pre-Raff) bar none. Never had so much fun... and I guess that is where the legacy and reputation of the ass and legs of the big Mick got their start. I had to beat the guys off with a stick.. far from being offended.. I was quite pleased. Met the best of friends I had there. Understood it wasn't my thing.. that I was just there for the free booze and the fun.. and I became best of friends with some of the people that came there. on that note.. Prog is for everyone. Straight, gay, lesbian, transsexual, transgender... Period. I think some other genres, like disco, were traditionally more platforms, meeting points for gay people. But not many gay people liking prog or being acquainted to prog doesn't mean that the door is not open. The photo above reminds me of Queen. There was a time when photo's like these were being made, and I also remember a photo of Queen, which was a bit like that. Kati also made a point with her mentioning of David Bowie. Now that I mentioned Queen, they are here on the site, and that... well, is already prove enough for... (return to the first sentence of this post). |

this was exactly my point (what GKR said). I really don't have too much of an opinion of it myself to be honest, I was more wondering what everyones reactions was too this question. Alot of interesting answers and some troll like ones too. Although this question was meant for a discussion, I wasn't favoring any side of the debate...but its still an interesting thought. If people found out my sexuality, their first opinion of me possibly maybe "he watches RuPaul drag race and loves Lady Gaga, Kylie Minogue, Cher and Britney Spears (for some reason "gay" icons are mostly women)." But I'm the more watches documentaries and listens to Genesis.

I have a lot friends in the LGBT community, but I must admit I've never really found out whether or not they're into prog. I usually meet them at underground electronic gigs and festivals, which often have a very understanding and open relationship to sexuality. I do know a couple of transgendered folks who are heavily into modern progressive electronic like F*ck Buttons, Flying Lotus, Ochre, Boards of Canada and the likes....maybe I should introduce them to some Klaus Schulze and see if I can make him a sort of gateway into Krautrock for then finally to slap on some KC Nahh maybe not. Every time we meet we're too involved in the dancing and drinking and beeeep to start a regular convertion into prog. Oh almost forgot; I got an old friend of mine + a dozen of his, who just so happens to be gay, into Manuel Göttsching's beautiful chessboard album (E2 E4). Heh, it's an interesting question: are minorities and those who are historically oppressed less likely to seek non-traditional outlets? When you are held to be different than the majority already, do you compensate by stricter adherence to the cultural norm to which you are tied? Phrased in the opposite direction, does being in the majority offer more freedom for personal preference and expression? Or could the opposite be true: does being outcast provide a gateway into other alternative lifestyles? I wonder what the data would say. It's clear that culture has a massive impact on preferences, but I wouldn't know whether cultural clash would result in harder lines or more blurred ones. You often see strong polarization when people feel their way of life is threatened by a competing culture, so my gut feeling is that Prog is for heterosexual white males out of happenstance. ------------- Hail Eris!

To be a slightly more serious (but still not serious enough), it seems to me that there are very few LGBT celebrities in the prog-rock community compared to the metal world where Rob Halford or Marissa Martinez (the artist formerly known as Dan Martinez from Cretin) seem to be well accepted. |

most of the motive of those polls was to encourage exploration.. not as much to vote for those you do know.. it was to check out stuff you might like from those you don't. Besides we all know it is going to come down to a SWilson v PT final.
