Sorry if the topic were already open, I couldnt find it.
Martin Barre doesnt fit in the ecletic or crossover cathegory? Or perhaps prog-related - as we wait for his true progressive solo offering? I mean, his three firts solo albums and specially "Stage Left" are quite progressive. He released a folk album, full of acoustic musics and now are playing some Blues and Hard Rock.
I really wish to hear more opinions about it.
His website: http://www.martinbarre.com/ and there is also a bit of bio on the Jethro Tull website: http://jethrotull.com/martin-barre-bio/

One thing though: this is the third thread about Barre yet not a single one offers up any clips for evaluation. No links to any music. That makes it difficult. If you are serious about your suggestion, then follow the simple guidelines I know and own a lot of Tull albums, but I have never heard any Barre solo. I suspect a lot of people on here feel the same....which is why we need some samples - preferably ones that show his progressive tendencies.

You're absolutely right. I'am sorry. Here what I found in youtube (Martin doesnt have any bandcamp or soundcloud, appearently).
From A trick of memory (1994) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4THiItMvto4&list=PLB6C9D85B39535CA1 (its a live version, it seems to be recent).
From The Meeting (1998): - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTkSjx6nhE4 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amlLmUN1Cig
From Stage Left (2003): - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vr63_ODKNPE - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0l4r0_IpwEA
From Away with words (2013): - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkYBlFPWf-0 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JahIQS1B-MA - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFmK-C90sfE
From Order of Play (2014): - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBWWkqxGMEQ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxVU8otXJyw - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yvukYbizhE
It shows a little of the path Martin is taking ith his music. If he is coming back to his roots to try another kind of flights later... only time will tell.

I have "A Trick Of Memory", and listened to it today. I feel it could get accepted by Crossover. I'll listen to the Spotify albums Olav posted, and will consider adding him to the chart.

I have Stage Left. More pop elements than prog actually if you ask me. Even some straightforward numbers. But the Tull sound appears here and there (a Winter snowscape for example which was added as a bonus in the jt christmas album. Indeed it could be included in the crossover family and I'd like to see him on PA one day.

It's not Progressive Rock. I like his touch and Style in JT and I agree he is a great musician BUT I can't found any Prog elements in his solo albums (IMO).

Not even in some moments of "Stage Left" or in the instrumental tracks of "A Trick of Memory"? By the way, check out the last track of the "Away with words", it shows a great progression, good as any Tull track.

1 or 2 track isn't enough for me. For example "Grand Funk Railroad" have a Progressive track called "Railroad" but you can't say they are a Progressive band!! I stand to my opinion and IMO it's not Progressive Rock as I said before. Thanks.

I'm going to present Mr. Barre to the Crossover team. Personally, I'm leaning toward a mild yes vote, but I cannot say what the rest of the team will do. If he does not get accepted, I'll will petition for him as prog related. I think he deserves as much.

I have been a fan of Martin Barre's since 1972; I have all
his recordings, including the very hard to find live A Summer Band CD, (only 500 pressed) but this is not indicative of his 5 studio albums. There are not just one or 2
progressive rock tracks on his studio albums; there are lots. All of his tracks can be accessed; see above from previous listers. His first studio album Trick of Memory (1994) starts
off with Bug....this is prog in my estimation...time signature changes
galore incorporating both keyboard, guitar interludes. Light and shade,
quirky...prog!
Steal from the same album is definitely prog includes Mel Collins from
KC on Sax. Then there’s the acoustic Empty
Cafe which was played at Tull gigs.
His next studio album The
Meeting (1996) has 3 amazing prog pieces Outer Circle, Misere (a
part of the Tull set list for a number of years) and Spanner (in my opinion his greatest ever piece of solo work)...all
3 prog IMHO.
By far and away his best studio album is Stage Left (1993), all original
compositions and if this isn’t classified as prog, then I know nothing (don’t
respond!). Such great diverse playing both acoustic and electric masterpieces on
this album. Murphy’s Paw was also
part of Tull’s set list and another version of Winter Snowscape made it on Tull’s Christmas album in 2003.
His next album is the all instrumental Away with Words (2013)...there are 21 pieces of music and no less
than 10 Tull tracks get an amazing reworking. So by my reckoning there has to
be at least 10 prog tracks on this album!
His most recent album Order
of Play (2014) comprises 14 tracks, 11 being reworked Tull tracks, all of
which are reinvigorated and all done in one take as they would be played in
concert.
So of his 5 studio albums there are 74 tracks, 22 (30%) of
which are reworked Tull tracks and at least 3 other Barre compositions being performed as part of Tull’s set list. And amongst these 25 tracks are some
astonishing compositions and playing by one Martin Lancelot Barre, many of which
in my opinion are prog.
Some come on guys get Martin onto PA....crossover please, I
reckon prog-related is a gross put down for such a great prog guitarist.

Thanks for this complete post. I know him from 70's and I like his style and touch so much but in JT. I listened to SOME of his solo album and buy his last album "Order of Play". This isn't about his career IMO this is about his SOLO albums. Honestly I don't think he released a Prog album and this is my opinion but I'm dont want to fight for "MB's solo albums is Prog or not"! He worked hard in Progressive Rock genre and one of the great musician in this genre history (as you said before) and I respect to him.

Personally, I find "A Trick Of Memory" to be a qualified crossover prog album. "Away With Words" is a mostly acoustic album, and would not have convinced me. "Order Of Play", with watered down (to my ears) versions of Tull songs seems borderline. Since "1 prog album" is the perquisite here, my vote is in as "yes"

hahahha.. oh don't worry... there are plenty of bad albums here if you enjoy a bit of wit and spit
and who doesn't
your best bet IMO.. express the love and touch on the elements that you think 'prog fan' might have of interest.
As far as the rating.. f**k it.. no one cares about that but fanboys.. the value of a review is in the words.. the review itself.. the passion, be it love or hate, a reviewer has the album and how they express it. Interest a reader in wanting to listen to the album. My cheap advice for the day haha

I was never a good reviewer... I never liked them at least.. but I did feel my best, and have been told they were my best in the aftermath of a particularly contentious addition here and I felt like I the albums needed a bit of ... explanation as to why myself and others felt they belonged.
take that approach.. in theory..
let me know when you do one.. I'd like to read it.. I do miss a lot around here for not being online much and often being a serial spammer when I am.

ahh... as I said.. I do miss a lot hahahha. I'll check them out.
don't worry about the language thing... I'd be willing to bet they are better written than many native speakers... we love to butcher our own languages. Hell.. you have to be drunk to understand some of my posts
Besides it is like RPI man... the meaning often cuts through the language.. no one is grading you or your english. One of our most beloved characters of the site's past didn't speak English and used babelfish for his album reviews... what a character he was
those you had to be drunk to understand... or wanted to get drunk to celebrate a posting of his latest reviews.
Classic they were...
