Hope they'll win at least one round, what would be their first playoff round win since '93, before I became a fan.
Wouldn't mind them knocking out the Rangers in the second also, but that's too much to ask for really, the Isles' playoff record the last 20 years, and recent slump in form, and the season the Rangers have had (congrats on that Presidents' Trophy btw, Phil ), taken into account.

I will naturally go with the Red Wings, even though I am not hopeful (it's been a weird season). Yet Petr Mrazek could catch fire. That, and no team from Florida should even be allowed in the playoffs.

Thank the heavens Kane is back. He could have easily had his best year if not for that $(*!@$ injury. Here are my predictions:
Quarterfinals: Wild in 6 Hawks in 5 Ducks in 4 Flames in 7 Habs in 5 Wings in 6 Pens in 5 Isles in 6
Semi: Hawks in 4 Ducks in 6 Wings in 7 Pens in 4
Conference: Hawks in 7 Pens in 5
Final: Hawks in 6
Also, can we take some time to mention the greatness of the Flames for knocking the Kings out. Beyond joyous for me.

I actually don't want to play the Isles in round two. That feels too risky for me taste, with the cross town rivalry and all that. But hopefully the Rangers make it to round two...

Ok, I'm a die hard Penguins fan from Pittsburgh and I don't see how the Pens can possibly go that far. As much as it pains me, I have the Rangers eliminating them in four. I'm going to say that I really hope that you're right, but I think that's a stretch for this team.

Great work by Crosby & Co. last night. Keep it up!
Have just seen Liverpool getting knocked out of the FA Cup (which more or less puts an end to their season). I know the Isles can't get knocked out today, but seeing another of my sports teams lose would definitely ruin my Sunday, so here's hoping the Isles can pull off a win for the expectedly loud home crowd at the Coliseum.
Let's Go Islanders!

Habs are terrific! They can ride Price far down the road. Flames vs Canucks is war revisited (an amazingly nasty affair). The Isles may cause the biggest surprise. Detroit and Chicago need to kick it up. But I do not think this first round will ever beat last year's barn burners (ridiculous set of series)

I guess its different being I live in the nyc area, but NYR fans def aren't taking the Isles lightly. The media is def focusing on the Rangers, but they definitely seem to respect what the islanders did this year.
Either way, I find them the second dangerous team for the rangers (behind the Habs) and would love the caps to stop taking these sh*tty penalties and attempt some offense.

I do think the Isles are a talented team but i'd be surprised if they went past the next round(if the beat the Caps). They need some experience and I think there will be some growing pains along the way. Mind you it seems wide open this year for someone new to win the cup so who knows, but i'd be shocked if it was them. Good to see your comments Phil on the Ranger fans taking the Isles very seriously because anyone would be foolish to look past them. Call me crazy but Minnesota has really impressed me and they could really go far, they are my dark horse to go all the way but man they will have to earn it being in the West.

And I would have rode with the Wild for awhile if they weren't playing the Blues. They are my western team and just can't pick against them this early. Of course...with their recent performances I wouldn't be surprised if the Blues choke it away.

I agree they lack the necessary experience. But I was hoping, and, of course, there's still a good chance of that happening, that they could win at least one playoff series, to break that 22 years spell.
Shame what happened to Visnovsky the other night. Hopefully not a career ending hit, but he's had something like 6 concussions through his career, so you never know. And he'd been the Isles' best offensive defender so far in the playoffs too.
Hoping for a win tonight, but we're missing two of our, IMO, top 4 defenders, in Visnovsky and Hamonic. We get back Grabovski from injury, but he's been out the last 27 games, so he'll probably be pretty rusty. Don't like our chances, but you never know. We haven't trailed in the series yet. Hopefully we won't be after tonight either.
Let's Go Islanders!

I'd love to see the Isles play the Rangers, that one could get nasty before all is said and done. Good to see the Islanders on the right track after all these years, the future looks bright. And I like the leadership and passion that Tavares has shown.

The Isles winning it at the Coliseum would be an amazing addition to history, perhaps too amazing to happen in real life though... As cool as it would be... that would ruin my bracket!
Nice to see some other hockey fans, they are somewhat hard to find.
A little late to the party, but here were my predictions, doing alright so far.
East:
Montréal in 5 Tampa Bay in 6 NY Rangers in 5 Washington in 7
West :
St. Louis in 6 Chicago in 6 Anaheim in 5 Calgary in 6
Semi : Chicago in 6 Anaheim in 6 Montréal in 6 NY Rangers in 5
Conference: Chicago in 7 Montréal in 7
Final : Chicago in 6
Not a Hawks fan but my team (sharks) didn't make it for the first time in a decade, so all these picks are pretty much unbiased.

Tampa outplayed them hard in the last 10 minutes of that game, and now Tampa having home advantage I hope they can close it out.
Mrazek had an insane game and made many huge saves, and the Wings just didn't come back...
Stamkos hasn't scored so he's due, I'm hoping Tampa can close this out.

I still have to go with my dark horse(Minnesota) over Chicago. I picked Tampa, New York and Anaheim. Man Washington looks pretty good and i'd be surprised if it didn't go seven games. Same with Tampa and Montreal another toss up in my opinion. Calgary just doesn't quit but I hope the Ducks kick their ass. I haven't liked Calgary since the late eighties when they took out Montreal to win the cup., plus I don't like Burke at all.

Habs not showing a lot of the type of character that wins games - they have been pretty poor since game 4 against Ottawa. 4 losses out of 5. The only good game they played in that stretch was Game 1 against Tampa. They have no ability to finish even the most gilt edged scoring opportunities, and their "system" is predicated on winning 1-0 or 2-1. As soon as the opponent gets a 2 goal lead it's over. And last game it was over as soon as Tampa tied it with 30 secs left in the first period. They never looked good after that. Very disappointed

Yeah, it's obvious right now that this team needs a captain on the ice. I can't say I'm disappointed, though, as I wasn't expecting much from them this year. Honestly, it's a pretty average team overall and they're lucky to have the best goalie on the planet. We'll see tonight who'll show up.

he's the best goalie on the planet during the regular season, just as the team is one of the top teams in the regular season. In playoffs, both show themselves to be illusions. When you go head to head against your mortal enemy over and over, and the pressure is on, he has yet to consistently deliver. The winner in game 1 was stoppable and the first 2 goals in game 2 were stoppable, especially looking at what Bishop was stopping.

oh yeah it's over. The better team is winning, no doubt about it

all right! That win accomplished a lot - ended playoff losing streak , ended losing streak to Tampa, avoided a sweep, sent Bishop packing and got a lot of goals. I guess it's the old cliche. One game at a time

I think Tampa, after playing only 1 minute of the final 40 in game 3 and winning, probably felt like they just had to show up. In pulling Bishop, Tampa was basically giving up on the game with the score only 3-0, which surprised me. But it did keep Bishop from embarrassment. I'm most worried about the Tampa Bay pp which continues to be deadly.

^ good point, they must stay disciplined or they'll make 'em pay. Thought it was the good decision to pull the goalie, could have shake the players but all went very wrong for them.
Now it's one period at a time : focus and discipline

it was awesome. Habs really redeemed themselves the last 2 games. It will still take a minor miracle to pull out two more wins, but at least they are still alive! It was also great that they could win won in front of the hometown fans, who were pumped up and behind them 100% even when Tampa scored the potentially deflating tying goal. Someone called in TSN690 after and said that if the series goes 7 games, the crowd that showed up for game 5 should be invited back for game 7

^ Game 6 will be extremely hard to win but they're playing with a lot of confidence right now so I'm not really worried. Carey was terrific (that glove deflection!!) in Game 5 and I'm confident he'll be as strong tomorrow night. What we need is three quick goals.
See you in Montréal for Game 7, Bolts.

This, I don't understand. | This is really surprising. I expected Tampa to be at the bottom of the standings this year. The fact that they made it into the WCF and beat the Wings and Habs is stunning, plus not having Callahan; if you told me this at the start of the regular season, I would've told you that you're insane.

But the defense is very sub-par. Unless you're going along with what McTavish said, "I think offense wins hockey games and we're going to be loaded with it." And look how bad they've done because they have nobody on defense. Offense doesn't win a hockey game, a balance of both does, which is something that the Habs have.

^ Couldn't disagree more here. The Habs have a very poor offense and their PP have been horrible all year long. They scored only 24 goals in 12 playoffs games and it might be the beginning of the end for coach Therrien...yeah, defense wins championships but if you can't score, forget it.

I can't see Therrien going anywhere. He's not a great coach for sure, but 1) he is getting great regular season results 2) the team just doesn't have a lot of scoring power
It's time to ship out the dead wood, especially pieces that are worth something like Plekanec and Markov. It's time to go with youth. It is working for Ottawa and Tampa. As long as Markov and Pleks are around they will be overused, while Galchenyuk continues to languish on the wing. The only young forward to be given any leash is de la Rose, who is more like a third defenceman, just what they don't need. Get some scorers and teach them the defensive system!

Tampa may not have the best defense but Bishop has been really good most of the time. And yes Montreal has struggled to score goals, they need to bring Lafleur out of retirement.

Congrats Phil, that series could have gone either way. Can't see the Rangers/Bolts series going any other way as well, the best teams in the East don't seem to have a lot to chose between them. Yeah that West final is going to be a monster series, I still can't figure out who i'm going to pick in that one. Crawford seems to be back to himself again or it would be the Ducks for sure. Down to four teams that come from four totally different locations which s cool.

Thanks.
Yeah...what a tense series. These one goal wins/losses are very nerve-wrecking. TB and the Rangers play a very similar style offensively, so this is going to be one active series...fast and furious. The one thing about them is they seem to be hot/cold...of course they did play better versus the Habs, who I think are a better team than Detroit. So idk...the other thing that worries me is that there are a few rejected ex-Rangers on that team, that I'm sure will be hungry for revenge (especially Callahan, the ex-captain). I do anticipate another 7 game series.
The west...the ducks look good. Very good. Can't count out the Blackhawks of course...but still...I'll say Ducks in 6.

Picking the Ducks and Bolts although both feel like the underdogs to me despite also feeling both series are a coin toss. Cleared my schedule(yeah like i'm really busy this long weekend) to watch the West final at 3 pm but also the Canada/Russia game is on at 2:45 pm which means a lot of the flipping of the channels. Not a big NBA fan by any means but the Clippers/Rockets game seven is also right around the same time, feast or famine I guess. At least I can watch the Tigers/Cardinals game tonight at 8 pm. A great day for sports.
