Vespero - Fitful Slumber until 5 A.M. (2015)

the band's sixth studio album will be available to purchase on cd or in digital format on MARCH the 3RD

"Music is like a dream. At the same time it is, on the contrary, like a more distinct form of consciousness than that of our normal waking hours. Which of the two really was music, I used to wonder? Music had the power at times to reverse these contrary things." – from "The Temple of the Golden Pavilion" by Yukio Mishima (1956).

"Fitful Slumber until 5 A.M." is the 6th studio album by VESPERO. It’s a fascinating, all instrumental, conceptual piece touching upon the theme of intricate functions of the human subconscious, dream-visions and music. Arguably, this is the band’s most ambitious and complicated work that brings together traditions of progressive, psychedelic, jazz, academic, and folklore music. Art direction and design by ZonderZond. (7 tracks - 70 min.)

Damn...this reminds me that I still need to get my hands on 'Droga'Embarrassed

This new one does sound very promising (as Droga does). I've already made a note of it and plan on ordering the two the next time I think about skipping meals for music.

It's a definite buy for me - thanks again for your review that made me take an interest in these guys.

I'm also missing Surpassing All Kings. Maybe time to get that one too if I can raise the shekels.

Interesting to see mandolin, zhaleyka, accordion, flute and sax as ingredients in the recipe this time. More flavours for a tastier stew!

I do hope the album would be as good as the 5' sampler seems to suggest. I am just a tiny bit worried about the playing time, 70', which exceeds my natural attention span by 20 minutes

Also, the remaining 7 copies of VESPERO "Cello Liventures" (R.A.I.G. Records, AT052) are still in stock. This album is not mentioned at the Vespero's PA discogrsphy - don't know why.... But it's definitely recommended to those who enjoy improvised side of the band's music. Check it out here - http://raig.bandcamp.com/album/vespero-cello-liventures-in-memory-of-vladimir-belov

^ Just added Cello Liventures.

Looking forward to hearing the new album. Hope it's as good as Droga, which was stellar, IMO.

I just listened to the full album on Bandcamp - and I'm loving it. There's a hell of a lot of music to digest, and I know it's foolish to put too much faith in a single hearing, but I think this is an early album of the year contender for me.  A few random thoughts:

- Mandolin is just all over the place on this album, and it really works. 'Folk space' is an interesting micro-genre.
- I always enjoy Ivan Fedotov's drums but he's playing out of his skin in places here.
- Absolutely barn-burning guitar solo toward the end of Vision 4 had me grinning Cool
- Bit less of the trademark synth work than usual on a couple of tracks, making more space for oodles of guitar & mandolin.

Overall they've moved their sound on again. I like how all their albums are recognisably Vespero, but each has its own distinct voice.
