Can be only one: Dark side of the moon! But plenty other good albums this year, one of the best years in music history...

When I did the poll it was 2-1 for Genesis beating pink floyd. pink floyd DSOTM is the obvious choice for two reasons.

  • it has sold hundreds of thousands of copies and as of 2004 was selling 8000 copies a week
  • introducing countless people to progressive rock

MY TOP 5:

  1. Genesis - Selling England by the Pound
  2. Pink Floyd - Dark side of the moon
  3. Gentle Giant - In a Glass House
  4. King Crimson - Lark's Tongues in aspic
  5. Emerson Lake & Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery

"Space Ritual"

There's good songs on "Larks' Togues in Aspic", but IMO they worked much better live.

My earliest Prog memories and influences are with:
  • Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
  • Jethro Tull - A Passion Play
  • Pink Floyd - Dark Side ofthe moon
  • ELP - Brain Salad Surgery
These really helped shape me in my youth.

Most important of the year:
  • Genesis - Selling England by the Pound
  • Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
  • Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells
  • Yes - Tale from Topographic Oceans
  • ELP - Brain Salad Surgery
It is too hard to place in any kind of order. These are all great albums with different contrabution to the Prog scene. Enjoy them all.

Tales From Topographic Oceans.

Selling England by the Pound a honorable second, with Dark Side of the Moon, Tubular Bells and Six Wives very close behind those two.

It's very hard to whittle it down to one, but nonetheless I'm STAGGERED that there was nary a vote for GG's storming In a Glass House. You disappoint me, people.

Posted By: King of Loss
Date Posted: August 15 2005 at 18:02
Well, Trouserpress, it shows how POPULAR Genesis is on Progarchives and Selling England by the Pound is the most "highly rated" album on Progarchives right? So it probably would receive a lot of votes like that.

Posted By: ummagumma08
Date Posted: August 15 2005 at 18:12
In a Glass House would be my second choice (GG's best IMO) but I had to go with Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh my all time favourite! Dark Side would be third... or I don't know... many fantastic records listed, really a great year..

MAGMA, definitely. Other albums may have sold many more copies, and
may be regarded by many as the cornerstones of prog, but "Mekanik
Destruktiw Kommandoh" (even more so than its two predecessors) gave
birth to a whole new genre of music.

I grew up with "The Dark Side...", so it's for me a subjective choice. I must say it's very close between Genesis and Floyd.

Top 7:

1. Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon

2. Genesis - Selling England By The Pound

3. Gentle Giant - In A Glass House

4. ELP - Brain Salad Surgery

5. King Crimson - Lark's Tongues In Aspic

6. Jethro Tull - A Passion Play

7. Yes - Tales From Topographic Oceans

I voted GG's "In a Glass House", although Magma's "Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh" came very close.

Today it's Tubular Bells, mainly because I've just bought the
orchestral version. Otherwise I would split my vote with Selling
England. Second best are Larks', Dark Side and Photos of Ghosts

D'oh! I pressed for SEBTP before realising Larks Tongues is on the list. Never mind.

Mahavishnu Orchestra's Birds of Fire is also worth a mention.

Bloody good year, 1973. They don't make em like that any more blah blah............

This one was hard. It comes down to Jethro Tull's A Passion Play (very underrated), Gentle Giant's In a Glass House, and Magma's Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh for me.

I voted for Magma, for making some of the most original music I've ever heard.

This is ridiculous ¡¡¡. "Selling" is kicking everybody´s ass in this poll, including the overrated least progressive rock album "Dark side". Still, "Dark side " has made it to the second overall place.

Managers of this site: Pay attention to this. Something is not right with that list. Or with the method you have selected to rank this albums.

I don´t see Banco´s first album, which is way more imaginative and has 10 times more creative and original music than "Dark side". While I can listen to Banco´s first, 3 times in a row, I can listen to "Dark side" once, only if I skip songs number 2,3, 4 and 5.

Note: The most popular titles. That doesn't mean that there couldn't be more imaginative and creative music made. However, Dark Side Of The Moon is truely original music IMO. And there isn't anything wrong with that list. It contains the most well-known and influential albums in history of prog-rock. I, for instance haven't heard of Banco before.

There should be a poll making tortorial....

the question was "Choose the most important or favorite album from 1973"

most important and favourite are two completly different things!!!

My favourite album from then is topographic oceans, but by far the more important is darkside

its like the same thing as asking in the same poll, " whats your favorite album or airplane company"

its just not fair, i dont know what to put as my answer...
