I'll define a non prog song as being by an artist/band not in the archives.... in order of preference:
1. Jesse (Janis Ian) 2. Ghosts (Japan) 3. Private investigations (Dire Straits) 4. The ninth wave (Kate Bush) 5. Desperado (Eagles) 6. Vincent (Don McLean) 7. I'm not in love (10 CC) 8. Cup of coffee (Garbage) 9. Samba pa ti (Santana) 10. The sound of silence (Simon and Garfunkel)
For more, see my home page.
EDIT: I might as well go for top 50 while I am at it....
11. Baker street (Gerry Rafferty) 12. This masquerade (Carpenters) 13. The winner takes it all (ABBA) 14. Time in a bottle (Jim Croce) 15. The first time ever I saw your face (Roberta Flack) 16. Bat out of hell (Meat Loaf) 17. Perfect day (Lou Reed) 18. Through the barricades (Spandau Ballet) 19. Where or when (Bryan Ferry) 20. Wildflower (Skylark) 21. Hou me vast (Volumia!) 22. Silent all these years (Tori Amos) 23. Song to the siren (This Mortal Coil) 24. Gollums song (Emiliana Torrini) 25. Homeless (Paul Simon) 26. Promises (Cranberries) 27. White rabbit (Jefferson Airplane) 28. Life on Mars? (David Bowie) 29. Breaking us in two (Joe Jackson) 30. Afscheid (Robert Long) 31. Nur zu Besuch (Die Toten Hosen) 32. Year of the cat (Al Stewart) 33. Under your thumb (Godley and Creme) 34. Testament (Boudewijn de Groot) 35. Bedshaped (Keane) 36. New year's day (U2) 37. Tian tang - Paradise (Tengger) 38. -Fancy Colours-Chicago (Chicago's I-VII+Live in Japan=Prog)
-Aja-Steely Dan (Couldn't decide on one, but this song is perhaps the
zenith of their jazz-pop craftsmanship...prog fans check out their
material at once!)
-Baba O'Reilly-The Who (What prog fan doesn't love Tommy, Who's Next, and Quadrophenia?)
-Suite on Side Two of Abbey Road-The Beatles (This may be cheating, but its all the reasons why they were great)
-Everyone-Van Morrison (Astral Weeks and Moondance sure as hell aren't
prog, but their fusion of jazz, blues, pop, soul, and rock were daring
and groundbreaking in their own right)
-Take Five-Dave Brubeck Quartet (Most trad-jazz is way over my head,
but I just love the way he combined great melody with stunning rythmic
experiments on the Time Out lp)
-The Epic-Pat Methany (Some of his work verges on new age drivel, but
on American Garage, the musicianship is great and the composition
better. I would actually classify this album as prog, and if you
want to argue with me, listen to this 12-minute opus.)
-God Only Knows-The Beach Boys (Pet Sounds and Smiley Smile stand
alongside the Beatles later work in my eyes as the logical stepping
stones to art rock, if not quite there in subject matter and in
musicianship, on the mark in techniques and mindset.)
-Surf's Up-Brian Wilson (Maybe this is cheating since it was written
for the Beach Boys, but this song needs to be heard to be believed)
-Suite: Judy Blue Eyes-Crosby Stills and Nash (I'm a sucker for great
harmonies, and its in a suite! What more could you expect from a
non-prog group?)

I agree - I was copying the list from my PDA and by the time I got to 10, I'd forgotten that it was supposed to be a non-prog Top 10. I would therefore remove Carpet Crawlers and And You And I and replace them with Electrolyte (REM) and Sweet Thing (Van the Man).
