As most of the current polls seemed to be pitting bands against unlikely opponents, I thought I do one myself:
The Beatles Versus Genesis!

The Beeeeeeeeatles, but Genesis made me pause to consider first. Trespass, Foxtrot, and Selling England are just that good. Of course the Fab Four will win, but not without a fight.

The Beatles were important, but so were other 60's rock bands. I would also like to point out that genesis made "real" concept albums.

Does The White Album win absolute here? I'm still looking forward to ordering it, considering what I've read here this Beatles album is amongst their best ever done, a 'must have' (prog?) rock album.
The Beatles forever reign over Genesis of course.

It is The Beatles most diverse album, and my favorite. The acoustic tracks in particular are great; in fact, there are so many great acoustic numbers on this album, it could rank high in that category alone. Beyond that, Helter Skelter (Beatle Metal ), Piggies (Baroque), Back in the U.S.S.R. (the greatest Beach Boy parody of all time), and Cry Baby Cry are personal favorites. As far as being "prog", I would say rather that it is their most experimental yet earthy album.

A bit surprised to know that Tony Banks was classically trained, since I had read in the forum that this was an exclusivity of Keith Emerdon and other one I can't quite recall precisely, think it was some member from The Nice (besides Keith obviousy as he'd been also a band member).

i think the Beatles are amazing.
Not in the least bit overrated .. underrated if anything.
Revolver and Abbey Road are 2 of my favourite albums.
It's just that i have a much closer emotional tie with Genesis.
I discovered them at a very crucial time in my life and they took me to places
no other band could.

Well, it's only because it's PA that the poll is so close and Genesis might yet swing it by the end. On most other forums, it would be a landslide victory for Beatles.

lol Walton Street, I don't know how you could argue the most popular band of all time is underrated...unless you think the correct response for mankind is to sell ourselves to be Paul and Ringo's slaves.

The popularity itself becomes a convenient excuse for some people to pass them off as the precursor of boy bands. It has happened...on this very forum, if I am not very much mistaken. Not saying that they are underrated anything, but I can understand why people would say that.

most of us are age peers,
I find the Beatles (or anything 'old') are not reaching most younger people and they are usually the ones calling them overrated because they have no idea, or care, what the Beatles mean to music in general.
i remember years ago being bemused at the people who thought The Joshua Tree was the first U2 album...
just a goofy example but it illustrates how much worse it is now - years later
there are always a few thousand exceptions - and they find themselves on forums like this.
The other hundreds of millions don't :)

I know what you mean Walton, in terms of appreciating older music you're preaching to the choir. That's not the way I measure "overratedness," though. If you try to compare them to modern OVERRATED music in pop culture then yes, The Beatles would appear to deserve at least 1,000x more popularity than say, One Direction. But in the grand scheme of things, did they get more than their fair share of screaming fangirls? Have they still sold more music than any other music artist? Compare them to the greats of prog or other pop innovators like Kraftwerk, and The Beatles can't possibly be in that same "underrated" boat.

Hey, Genesis is taking the lead, at last!
I think Beatles were incredibly innovative, probably much more than Genesis, more than ANY band, so I won't argue that they were any less than Genesis on that point. Great songwriters too (except for the respective drummers in the band). Certainly much much more than a 'boy band', even in the early stage of their career.
But a lot of proggers, including me, have a bigger love for Genesis. It's a matter of the heart, I suppose.

Genesis made a lot of great music, but I have always had reservations about them:
1. I can't say I like Gabriel's voice too much (Collins's is not much better).
2. Genesis albums are lengthier than what I consider optimal. Some of them feel outright TL;DL
3. After a number of strong albums, Genesis made a few embarrassingly weak ones.
By way of comparison:
1. The Beatles remains one of the best vocal groups of all time
2. All "mature" (post-1965) Beatles albums are of optimal length and have perfect timing and structure. The 90' 2LP White Album is probably the only double album that I can listen to in one sitting.
3. There isn't a single post-1965 Beatles album that I consider weak, inconsistent, derivative or disappointing in any other way.
Regarding the oft-mentioned "influence": Genesis made a lot of ingenious symphonic rock, which is still being imitated (or emulated) by a number of new(er) bands. At the same time, the Beatles completely overhauled the whole world of popular music. I'd argue that the Beatles's innovation in 1965-1970 helped create or bring to the fore a good dozen styles, including symph, hard rock, psychedelic, electronic and what not.

GENESIS Easily. Many of Beatles votes haven't musical reasons. Nostalgic reasons or Historical reasons push some guys to choose The Beatles. Some of members talked about "Released Date" of albums!! and some guys talked about "World and Music without Beatles!!" I don't think like that. With or Without Beatles Progressive music and musicians did their great works. I mean great musicians like Zappa or Gabriel or ... made their music and this music found fans.

Okay, historical context aside.
Please Please Me Vs. FGTR. Neither a great debut but both nice albums. Then Genesis had a run of 8 very good to great albums, and yes I am including ATTWT. After that it was a downslide but still had three likable albums in them. The Beatles remaining output only had two not quite as good offerings in Beatles for Sale and Yellow Submarine. Now if you include Invisible Touch, We Can't Dance and Calling all stations you have three pretty bad albums on the Genesis resume.
Score:
Genesis - 8 4 3
Beatles - 10 3 0
I'd say that is a pretty clear win for The Beatles.
An additional point to consider is that The Beatles did it all in under a decade.

THIS is a good point!

Neither are huge favorites of mine, but at least I kind of like Genesis!

Genesis
I rarely listen to the Beatles these days, because I did it way to much in the past.
It's not the case with Genesis though.

Have to say Beatles, one reason I don´t think there would have been Genesis without Beatles. But of course you can say the same all the progbands, anyway I think would put at least Wigwam, PF & KC over Beatles.

I guess it depends on how you phrase the question. Best musicians? Most influential? Favorite between the two? Both bands are in my top 5. I voted Beatles just for their shear impact on music overall. (ask me tomorrow & I'll probably vote for Genesis )

The Beatles place in music history is immense - but thankfully this is a poll for which one is preferred - in which case Genesis is way ahead!

Beatles......................no hesitation.
Ok...going to play that old trump card again, but who can say how much Genesis and other bands were influenced by what the Beatles did...? There's no question at all that things would have been far different musically since many of these bands have openly said they were heavily influenced by the Beatles sounds.
If that's the case then the Genesis we hear and love today and in the past would not have existed in quite the same manner.
btw..the poll does not mention prefer or like or anything..it just says Andromeda poll...Beatles vs Genesis....perhaps Steve can clarify his intentions...?

^ I believe I posted this at a time when another member was posting polls with strange planetary names in the title. As it doesn't make since now I'll change it.

I always take consistency into account in these matters. Genesis at their best was better than The Beatles at their best. But I lost interest in Genesis after Peter Gabriel left, even though the band became much more popular among GenPop when Collins was on lead vocals. The Beatles put out quality albums (to varying degrees, but nevertheless) for their entire career.

I posted Genesis when I thought it was just a preference. 'Better' makes it a difficult choice. Better musicians, songwriters, trailblazers.......?

I should have taken this moldy old poll more seriously, sorry. Let's go with prefer.
