First Sherwood, now Payne. Why aren't these nearly men capable of anything else, aside from "tribute" albums?
I can't think of anything less I would spend money on

I tend to agree, but at the same time I'm glad to see a sign of life from this incarnation of the band. I'm looking forward to the upcoming new studio album of original material which has been in the pipeline for some time.

I like Payne's voice so if this was priced right I might consider it.

If you have access to Spotify, you can hear it there: Asia – Recollections (A Tribute to British Prog)

I just checked it out. You have to really LOVE Payne's voice to enjoy any of this. Why didn't they utilize the time/money on producing new original material. Ugh. |

A further piece of news is that the band has also got a new website up: http://asiafeaturingjohnpayne.com/ Under the 'news' button you can read more about Recollections There is also an interview with John Payne and Alan Parsons: Edited by SouthSideoftheSky - April 14 2014 at 15:49 |

Still don't understand how Payne gets to go around with the Asia name, and why anyone would care to see him. Where can I see Ray Wilson's Genesis or Kenny Jones' The Who perform?

You are entitled to your opinion of course, but remember that Payne after all fronted Asia for 14 years and recorded five full-length studio albums with them.

This is disappointing news. I was hoping for an album of original material. Since Downes and Payne split, the original Asia band has released 4 CDs of original material and Asia featuring John Payne none. With Erik Norlander in the band I was looking forward to a CD of original stuff. As a rule, I'm not a fan of tribute albums anyway. Disappointing indeed. I won't be buying or listening to this one.

Yeah, me too am looking forward to their forthcoming album of original material (which is to be called Americana). I don't know what is holding them back at this point, but this tribute album may be just something to keep the band alive until Americana is ready to be released. The "original" Asia has in my view released too many albums, showing a lack in the quality department. I much rather have one great album than four less-than-great ones, so I still have high hopes for Asia featuring John Payne. Especially as I really admire Norlander, both as a keyboard player and as a song writer. Edited by SouthSideoftheSky - April 15 2014 at 10:59 |

I agree with you. Phoenix, Omega, XXX, and Gravitas have been mediocre at best and not nearly as good as Asia, Alpha, and Astra. Any idea on when Americana is going to be released? I haven't heard much about it. Hopefully with Norlander involved it will be excellent. My fingers are crossed.

The reason is that Geoff Downes gave Payne the right to the brand of Asia. This was done to prove that he was committed to working forever with Payne, and never again with that fiend Wetton. Downes then left to rejoin.........erm........Wetton. Go figure.

There is no release date for Americana yet, and nobody knows why it is taking so long. Norlander has stated that he and Payne have written more than an album's worth of new material, but so far only one song has been released called Seasons Will Change (see this earlier thread: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=91623&FID=19). |

John Payne hosted a Q&A session here: http://www.reddit.com/r/Music/comments/23ax66/im_jon_payne_of_asia_featuring_jon_payne_a/ Of course someone asked about Americana, and this is what John replied:
