Favourite of the first 10 Genesis albums - Progressive Rock Music Forum

In my teens it would have been 'The Lamb..' and I still love it, but my fave now is 'Trick of the tail'

It's always a good thing when a band slaps the critics in the face with a killer album. The obituries were being written, in all the music mags when Gabriel left, but Trick, the fist album with Phil singing, revealed great strengths within the Genesis machine, regarding both songwriting and musicianship.

I'll never forget the first time I heard 'Dance on a volcano' !! I had been listerning to Gabriels Genesis for about a year, but had ignored anything the band done after he left. 'Dance on a volcano' went on to be one of my favourite Genesis songs of all time.

'You cant have two killers living on the same patch!'

Well, it looks like - for once - I'm actually in tune with the majority. Wonders will never cease. I am a little surprised, though, as I expected Selling England or Nursery Cryme to be the most popular.

I bought Nursery cryme some days ago, and have been lisening to it many times and at the moment its my favorite Album

4. Foxtrot ****1/2
5. Nursery cryme ****
6. Trespass ****
7. Wind and wuthering ****
8. Live ***
9. FGTR *

Not rated, the only one lacking in my collection: Seconds out.

I love all of them (except Trick which I only "really like alot" haha and From Genesis to Rev. which I havent ever heard and dont really intend on hearing). I had to choose Selling England though since it has two of my favorite songs on it - Firth of Fifth and the Cinema Show. Nursery Cryme and Trespass were close seconds.

I like "Waiting Room". From complete free-form to rocky but still weird. Never again was Genesis as experimental as on "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" (which is why that album is my favourite of Genesis).

Well, they are all brilliant except the debut, but one record represents absolute perfection to me: Selling England By The Pound. There are the 2 first poppier Genesis songs "I Know What I Like" and "More Fool Me" but they can't really pull down the sheer brilliance of the masterpiece, because they fit somehow to the character of the album and are also really good IMHO.

The album got a perfect production, the sound problems of earlier records were maked out and the record shines with some of prog's all-time best pieces (Dancing with the Moonlit Knight, Firth of Fifth, Cinema Show, After The Ordeal, The Cinema Show). No matter, SEBTP is THE symphonic prog masterpiece beside Close To The Edge, symphonic prog ain't get better than that.

Foxtrot is musicianal and progressively as a whole maybe a bit more attractive to progheads, but SEBTP got the better production and you really can hear any single instrument perfectly. For my taste the best produced prog record of the 70's together with CTTE and DSotM.

	To me Nursery Cryme is a very solid album with a lot of concept and with a lot of freshness, i enjoy every sigle time i hear it.is a masterpiece for me peace

	They're all great. I'll rate them coz it's fun Selling England by the Pound.....5+/5 A Trick of the Tail.....5/5 Wind and Wuthering.....5/5 Tresspass.....4.75/5 The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.....4.5/5 Foxtrot.....4.4/5 (but the last 3 tracks are 5+ ) Nursery Cryme.....4/5 Seconds Out.....3.75/5 Genesis Live.....3.5/5 From Genesis To Revelation.....2.25/5 But I'll admit that I haven't heard this one very much. My vote goes to Selling England, it just has something that the others do not, and is the first one with synthesizers. IMO, this is the greatest rock album of all-time (in fact, it pushes the boundary so much that it may not even be rock).
