Songs with a backbeat feeling are not very common in my experience, and it's an interesting rhythm feeling to me. So , do you know any good songs that incorporate this feeling?

Such a groove typically have a bass drum on 2 and 4. Let's leave out reggae though, because it's not the style I'm thinking about. I think the feeling has more resemblance to the brazilian samba which is "backwards" with bass drum accents on 2 and 4, while there is a lighter tuned drum playing on 1 and 3.

I'll give some examples in the next post...

Bruce Cockburn - Mighty Trucks Of Midnight  (1991) http://www.last.fm/music/Bruce+Cockburn/_/Mighty+Trucks+Of+Midnight(30s preview)
One of his best songs, much because of that nice backbeat.

Gilberto Gil - Danca De Shiva        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkQonv6c5yE
The feeling in the bass is the same as the bass drum in a samba, which marks every other beat, 2 and 4. Very original and cool feeling. The song is very "smooth" though, but I like it.

Toto - Till The End    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V93sAvmOjms
Backbeat in the chorus. At the end, Jeff Porcaro adds a snare drum rhythm in a brazillian fashion, though with a straight feeling. Very original.

Bruce Cockburn - Grim Travellers     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MB_6MXfUPgs
Another song by Cockburn, available on youtube.

Camel - Changing places        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQIVklkQ7Oo

Saga - What's It Gonna Be?        http://tinysong.com/HmmF
Straight main groove but there's a middle part with a backbeat, and it feels sort of backwards. The accentuation (open hihat) on the 3 in the chorus also does something to the feeling , almost creating a backbeat-feel on top of the straight groove.

Saga often has bridge sections or other in-between sections with bass drum on 2 and 4. It might have been inspired by Supertramp who have used that thing.

Supertramp - Hide in your shell      http://tinysong.com/jd6y  The long middle section ("I wanna know"). The second parts of the verses also have have sort of a back beat with accents on 2 and 4, nothing on 1 and 3.

Genesis - Silver Rainbow     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiRxRvS4SCA    cool backwards groove, snare on 1 and 3. Me and sarah jane also has a backwards groove by the way (not a fan of that song though)
