I just finished watching this film and wanted to hear your opinions. I'm aware this is one of those loved/hated works. Personally I was subjugated by its beauty. A wonderful portrait of one man's life and those around him. Childhood memories, thoughts, experiences, brought up. A deep voyage into the characters' subconscious as well. All filled with astonishing cinematography.

The only criticism for the film that I have is that it does drag on a little at the end. There are 20, maybe 30 minutes that could have been cut off. A great movie though. Very intimate, original and artsy. Reminded me at some points to the works of Kubrick, or Tarkovsky.

What did you think? A work of a genius or a piece of crap?

My grade: 8

Beautiful cinematography, but not much else in my book. 6 for effort.
Bigger on the inside.

I have it on bluray, borrowed it from my brother, and it's been lying on the windowsill for months.

I have a strong gut feeling that I will hate it. I know what I can expect from Malick, and it's 2:18 hours long, so I have a feeling that it could be extremely pretentious, but I can't know for sure. I thought "The New World" was really bad, but The Thin Red Line was really good (!), apart from those "poetic" parts with voice over, very pretentious. But the cinematography was nice, and Elias Koteas was good, among others.

But Brad Pitt is one of my most hated actors along with Colin Farrell (and Steven Seagal I guess, though I never watch Steven Seagal-movies), so Pitt could enhance the badness. I mean, he sucks! And I hate Sean Penn too.

By the way, I hated "Into The Wild", and I'm guessing it could be a little like that film, or how about "Legends of the fall", or "Benjamin Buttons Life" (Or whatever it was called.

Yeah, my feeling is that I will hate it, but I'm still curious..

I can assure you that is not like Into The Wild. I hated that film too. But for different reasons than yours I suppose. Yeah, nice photography and stuff. But I have lots of friends that worship that film like if it was, I don't know, f***ing Citizen Kane.  And they love the idea of escaping and dissappear from society just like its main character. On the other hand, leave them without their cell phone for one day and they'll be dead. Bunch of phonies, lol. That's why that movie gets on my nerves.

^ Okay, that's a relief! Like you say, many people seem to really love it, but I can't stand it.

Tree of Life won the Golden Palm after all, there has to be something good in it. I'll better watch it soon.
